"Although I had already decided on a few students for the slots, since there are new applicants, I will still consider it. If you have the capability, there's no problem letting you join the team. Of course, since you are interested in this aspect, even if your skills are lacking, I can allow you to join at your own expense." The Mediterranean Teacher said slowly.
Hearing the words "at your own expense," Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but twitch his mouth. Recently, he had received a subsidy from Liu Lianyue, which allowed him to supplement his nutrition more comfortably. If he had to pay out of pocket, he would need to transfer funds from Nobunaga Hideyoshi, and it would be better to minimize any disturbances from that side.
As for the reserved slots, it was quite normal here. It wasn't favoritism on the teacher's part; rather, because he had long managed this laboratory, he was well aware of which students had stronger practical skills. Allowing him to select directly could eliminate some factors that might lead to mistakes during assessments due to psychological issues.
"Alright, no problem." Yang Xiaoyou nodded affirmatively.
"Heh heh, you seem quite confident in yourself. Let me introduce you to Li Hong; she is the strongest among your group. Aside from her innate talent, she has put in a lot of hard work." The Mediterranean Teacher chuckled as he introduced Yang Xiaoyou to her.
As a teacher, using the phrase "strongest" in front of another student reflected his fondness for Li Hong.
"Hello," Yang Xiaoyou greeted her, and the girl merely nodded in response. She seemed somewhat proud, but given her talent, such pride was normal, especially at her age.
However, compared to the other freaks Yang Xiaoyou had interacted with, she seemed somewhat less impressive—perhaps there wasn't much comparability.
"Now then, just write a simple program. I just want to see your basics. Once approved, you can use the laboratory unconditionally; chips and boards can be used freely. Just write an application for anything you need and submit it to me." The teacher appeared to be somewhat impatient as he opened another computer for Yang Xiaoyou.
Yang Xiaoyou naturally wouldn't refuse this opportunity. The time spent organizing his thoughts hadn't been wasted; in fact, programming was one of the simplest tasks for him. He only needed basic commands and operational logic to generate what he wanted in his mind.
His brain's computational method was already somewhat similar to that of a computer. The significant progress he made in the field of trace cleaning was closely related to this ability.
However, since this was just a basic test, he didn't intend to complicate things. After quickly writing a simple program for a Perpetual Calendar and uploading it into one of the experimental box's chips, he fiddled with it for a moment before handing it over to the teacher for review.
The Mediterranean teacher was slightly surprised by Yang Xiaoyou's speed. Even though he had prepared in advance, being able to write something correctly at such speed was quite rare; at least it indicated that Yang Xiaoyou had a solid foundation in this aspect.
To achieve the goal of a Perpetual Calendar could involve many editing methods. As he carefully read through Yang Xiaoyou's program, he was astonished to discover that this new student demonstrated considerable skill in various techniques and had successfully modeled his work. Particularly impressive was how reasonably he divided modules and expressed complete ideas using concise language.
When the system performed automatic verification, there were no warnings at all. For beginners, even if their compilation passed, there would usually be numerous warnings indicating flaws. Perfecting each detail would require considerable effort; however, Yang Xiaoyou managed to complete everything perfectly in one go.
The difference between a novice and an experienced individual was immediately apparent.
"No wonder you're so confident; your foundation is indeed quite solid. However, the Perpetual Calendar is merely a simple design for verifying fundamentals. What you need to do is create a unique design that stands out. You have seven days to come up with something that can surpass the designs of other selected members. That Mediterranean Teacher over there is also smiling."
Yet, his words were somewhat exaggerated. Designing something impressive in just seven days, especially when others had spent half a semester on their projects, was quite challenging. Even if he were to tackle it himself without relying on existing topics, creating something entirely new might not meet the requirements.
But there was no choice; the timeline for the Electronic Innovation Competition was set. Other students had been preparing for this moment for a long time. If Yang Xiaoyou couldn't present a work worthy of entering the competition, then no matter how exceptional his abilities were, he would only be sidelined.
He had simply asked for this too late.
"If you have any questions, feel free to consult me directly or ask Li Hong as well," Zhu Qibiao said in a tone that mixed regret with encouragement. Deep down, he had already concluded that Yang Xiaoyou would struggle to complete this task.
Now it was just a matter of seeing what kind of product he could deliver in seven days. If this attempt failed, there would still be opportunities to learn from the experience for next time.
"No problem, but I want to start right now. Teacher, I need to apply for chips and materials," Yang Xiaoyou replied without hesitation.
At such a moment, to secure a spot, he couldn't hold back; he needed to create something substantial to push others aside.
"Sure thing! Just tell me what you need; I'll get you the supplies. Just write down your application," Zhu Qibiao responded readily.
"Second-generation chips..."
After hearing Yang Xiaoyou's request, Zhu Qibiao's expression tightened slightly. It seemed like quite a lot of items were being requested. While most of them weren't particularly valuable, the chip he wanted was of a higher grade than usual. Even Yuying Middle School only had a few of those on hand; typically, such high-quality chips weren't necessary for standard projects.
Even Li Hong beside him was using a lower-tier chip.
"Are you sure you want this type of chip? Wouldn't Li Hong's work?" Zhu Qibiao asked hesitantly.
"It seems that won't work; it might have something to do with my programming skills. I can't make it as concise as hers, and I doubt her chip can handle my requirements since it has fewer ports," Yang Xiaoyou shrugged in response.
"Alright then, just be careful not to break it, and when you copy it over, make sure you don't burn it out. It's very expensive. I'll help you get it tomorrow. For now, let's focus on the programming issues." After considering that the chip could be rewritten anyway, Zhu Qibiao nodded in agreement to his material request and then left the laboratory.
Upon hearing this response, Yang Xiaoyou was indifferent. It would be great if he could finish the program tonight. He decided not to go anywhere for the evening; he wanted to secure this opportunity without any worries.
Yang Xiaoyou then pulled open a computer beside Li Hong and sat down. However, before powering it on, he took out a few bags of compressed biscuits from his pocket and also retrieved a bottle of milk.
Sharpening the knife does not delay the work of chopping wood; to do a good job, one must first prepare their tools. Filling his stomach was the priority.
On the other side, watching Yang Xiaoyou munching away at his snacks after the teacher left, Li Hong's opinion of him dropped a few notches. Initially impressed by how quickly he had completed something, she thought he must have some foundation in this area. However, seeing his current attitude gave her the impression that he was quite careless.
No matter how strong one's abilities are, with such a laid-back attitude, future achievements would be limited. Li Hong had reached her current level not just because of her talent but mainly due to her own hard work and effort.
She instinctively disliked those who relied on their gifts and cleverness to achieve good results in a short time and then became complacent.
Afterward, she stopped what she was doing and left the laboratory without saying a word, preferring not to see him again.
