Chapter 111: Preparing for Battle
Recalling the scenes mentioned several times in the Memory Fragments, Yang Xiaoyou looked at the Dream Butterfly before her, and a hint of unusual color flashed in her eyes.
"The virus first appeared in the First Generation Body, ia, the living Hank, hey." As various factors in her mind connected, Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but shake her head with a bitter smile.
Hank's combined abilities across all Aspects were undoubtedly top-notch. Setting aside his selfish personality, his capabilities were not inferior to Nobunaga Hideyoshi. However, there was no information about him in her memories; it was clear he had died back in Kapa City.
Initially, Yang Xiaoyou didn't think much of it. After all, given the environment of Kapa City, without her well-prepared plan, even if she were to be thrown back there now, she might not come out unscathed. It was only natural that Hank had perished there.
But now, connecting some words from her memories, it seemed that Hank had actually participated in an operation against the Dream Butterfly at that time. Yang Xiaoyou didn't know how things developed specifically, but the outcome was quite evident: both of them had died.
This time, however, it was unclear what had happened. Hank must have abandoned a certain action on his own Aspects, which resulted in both of them surviving simultaneously.
Yet,
Upon thinking of a crucial question, Yang Xiaoyou's expression changed. She nervously asked the Dream Butterfly, "What about their interest in you?"
"I have altered all my data within the Cloud System. With the deaths of the laboratory members, no one else in the world knows what I look like."
Hearing her speak so directly made Yang Xiaoyou's heart race. She glanced at the others around them; while her own situation was vague, the Dream Butterfly had directly mentioned the Cloud System and the laboratory—this was too reckless.
However, after scanning her surroundings, she was somewhat surprised to find that both Huang Wei and Charming Shadow as well as Chen Wuyou were looking at them with blank expressions. Strangely enough, without Yang Xiaoyou's knowledge, they had entered Cognitive Acceleration mode!
Yet when she heard what the Dream Butterfly said, it was at a normal speaking speed. This—
Simultaneously entering Cognitive Acceleration while maintaining normal speech speed; was this what those mad scientists from the laboratory referred to as their peculiar ability?
Since she had injected Antibodies after the first mutation, her mental state hadn't reached its current level back then. From descriptions at that time, it could be seen that although the so-called First Generation Body Aspects were relatively weak, its mental aspect slightly exceeded her own at that time.
Now it seemed unexpected that such a bizarre resonance could occur; this was truly—
"Is this their strange ability? The use of power can directly influence another's mental state. Is this her power? They have surpassed her most outstanding Evolved Form. I wonder if under timely Antibody injection and more perfect mutations in the future, I could also reach such a level." Thoughts raced through her mind as she quickly returned to the original timeline; the scenery around them gradually returned to normal.
"Hey, what are you two chanting about? Have you really found a match?" Chen Wuyou said, his expression flat as he looked back and forth between the two.
Now that she had recovered, Dream Butterfly simply closed her mouth and stopped speaking.
Seeing her like this, Yang Xiaoyou was momentarily at a loss for words. If nothing unexpected had happened, she should have seen herself hiding somewhere during her time at the Overcast Laboratory.
From her earlier strange aura, it seemed that this fellow possessed the ability to sense Virus Carriers. Moreover, the bizarre abilities of those madmen were likely not limited to just that.
She remembered that they had once conducted a test on her, a direct destructive attack on the Human Body's psyche using that aura. The results of that test seemed to have left them unsatisfied. If nothing had changed, the seemingly weak and frail young idol in front of her must also possess some unique means of attack.
Recently, she had been exploring her mental state entirely on her own, especially entangled with her memory persona. She hoped to find some inspiration and direction from her.
Now the general issues were becoming clearer, but Yang Xiaoyou knew that the Queen Bee System had not appeared initially. It was likely that after Dream Butterfly escaped, she still engaged in some form of transaction with the organization. The specifics of that transaction were unclear, but it directly led to the premature emergence of the Licker and the birth of the Queen Bee System.
At the same time, it seemed she had also planted something within the organization; otherwise, it would be impossible for her to be so well-informed about their dynamics and research outcomes.
As for deliberately approaching her, Yang Xiaoyou completely dismissed that thought upon learning of her identity. It was absurd; the life of a Subject from her memories was vividly clear. If she were still under the organization's control, she wouldn't have such freedom, nor would she leak organizational information.
What she thought would be a swift attack was delayed for several hours until someone responsible for observation spotted a fleeting red figure by the Police Station.
According to Dream Butterfly's intel, the Queen Bee System was currently incomplete. The number of Lickers it could control depended on the receptor quality of the Host of the Queen Bee after being injected with bee serum and subsequent enhancements from additional injections.
Given how long the other side had delayed and some of her own sensing abilities regarding the Host of the Queen Bee, this fellow should be relatively new. It was likely more for experimentation; there should only be one or two Lickers at most.
It was somewhat unfortunate that although the Host of the Queen Bee was cultivated using her extraction methods, this original fellow lacked any controlling ability. All she could do was sense and ensure her personal safety from direct attacks as much as possible.
Moreover, while admitting to having corresponding means of attack, she also acknowledged that such attacks would harm herself as much as they would harm others—indeed, it was self-harm on a grand scale.
After grasping this point about this passive existence, Yang Xiaoyou displayed an expression akin to dead fish eyes.
Well then, it wasn't as useful as she'd imagined; however, the information provided to her still served its purpose.
"Don't use your guns if you don't want to die. If you can help me hold one off, we might have a way to deal with this," Yang Xiaoyou said, frowning as he watched the police officer trembling while drawing his weapon.
The main reason for staying here was to leverage their numbers to distract the threat while regaining strength and figuring out how to resolve their concerns. However, if someone started shooting, things would take a turn for the worse.
"Idiot! Put those away!" the Chubby Officer shouted at those who had drawn their guns.
"You all heard that! If we can hold one off, there’s still hope for survival. Just look at how fast they move; there's no way we can escape. But shooting increases the risk even more! We have to fight with everything we've got! Don't worry, there are enough of us. As long as each person takes a swing, it won't be able to move," the officer encouraged his pale-faced fellows after scolding those with guns.
Some of them were somewhat reliable, but many were just talking nonsense, seemingly trying to rally the crowd to join in.
Humans are strange creatures. When some saw others picking up sticks and moving forward together, fueled by a last-ditch feeling, they influenced each other and stood up. From the current scene, their numbers seemed to give them a bit of momentum.
Seeing those who picked up sticks, lamps, and chair legs, a hint of pity flashed in Yang Xiaoyou's eyes. If they could unite and work together, it might be fine. However, if fear spread later on, this fragile alliance would collapse instantly, and it was uncertain how many would survive.
But then again,
"Their lives or deaths have nothing to do with me." They were mere acquaintances, not even from the same country. Yang Xiaoyou had no interest in worrying about their fate. If he focused on solving his own problems, he might save a couple of lives. If he didn’t resolve the situation, they would all perish anyway; as long as Chen Wuyou and the others were safe, that was all that mattered.
