"Has it already come in? The outside must be blocked by the Corpse. Even if there aren't many of us, we need to Clean Up, which means we'll have to split our manpower. That way, we can deal with it separately. If we don't clean up, we'll be trapped here, and time is not on our side," Yang Xiaoyou said, gripping the modified handgun tightly, her expression darkening.
In this environment, which was both dim and cluttered yet relatively spacious, it was truly not a good place to confront the enemy. While there was enough space to dodge bullets, the opponent could also use the obstacles for cover.
Even for someone as confident in her shooting skills as Yang Xiaoyou, she felt a twinge of uncertainty in her heart.
"Everyone stay calm, don't panic. It's just one of them. We have guns," Qian Kai said, seeing that the last of his comrades was missing and likely dead. He took a deep breath, forcing down the grief and anger in his heart, standing up to speak loudly while brandishing the handgun he had taken from Shinoda Kenichi's men.
Just as he finished speaking, a shadow suddenly pounced down from above through the ceiling boards. Reacting swiftly to the sudden attack, Qian Kai rolled away to evade it and fired several shots at the descending figure.
Following his lead, several of Shinoda Kenichi's subordinates also opened fire on that shadowy figure.
The distinct sound of a Silenced Pistol echoed as dozens of bullets struck the body, but some ricocheted off and grazed a few students.
"Stop shooting!"
However, upon realizing that the fallen figure was actually one of his own subordinates, Qian Kai's face turned pale with horror.
The body of the bodyguard had multiple bullet holes, and its chest and abdomen were completely torn apart. The crimson gaping wounds and visible ribs looked horrifying; all internal organs had vanished, leaving only intestines and some remnants behind.
Due to the fall, the intestines spilled out onto the ground. The face was smeared with blood but remained largely intact, eyes wide open in a grotesque expression of death.
This terrifying and bloody sight caused nearby students to scream again. The younger team leader managed to gather some composure and stepped forward to help bandage those who had been grazed by ricocheting bullets.
Just as they reacted to the body, Yang Xiaoyou's expression shifted as she shouted, "Heart!"
Unfortunately, before she could finish her sentence, one of Shinoda Kenichi's subordinates was pierced through the chest by a crimson tongue that shot out from the shadows.
The tongue then coiled around him and dragged him back into the darkness.
"Ah!!"
Desperately clawing at the ground with both hands but unable to escape being pulled away quickly, the suited man let out a chilling scream that faded into silence.
"It's playing with us on purpose!" Qian Kai said angrily. This was his first encounter with such a creature, but its agility left a deep impression on him.
"Don't move the emergency light. This way, we can ensure the maximum visible range around us. If we pick it up, we might be able to scout further away, but the dead angles nearby will become even more dangerous." At this moment, Nobunaga Hideyoshi also stopped Shinoda Kenichi's subordinates who were preparing to grab the spotlight and scan the surroundings.
"Listen to him!" Shinoda Kenichi shouted, knowing that Hive Security had a solid reputation. He was aware that their core members included Survivors from Kapa City, and these Aspects were true experts.
Moreover, in terms of personal strength, those few from Hive Security completely overshadowed his own team.
While his subordinates might seem like skilled fighters in the eyes of ordinary people, they were truly lacking when compared to those mercenaries who had tasted blood.
The recent fatigue from their counterattacks was evident; although they had practiced shooting, it was nearly impossible for his subordinates to hit the enemy at such speeds. They could only rely on Nobunaga Hideyoshi and his team now.
"Ha ha ha! Establishment-kun actually listens to his advice; that's not like you at all! Ha ha! After all this time I've looked out for you, don't you have any gratitude to show?"
Just after Shinoda Kenichi's roar, a harsh, raspy laugh echoed around the empty platform. The source seemed to be moving, sometimes distant and sometimes close, sometimes above and sometimes below.
Combined with the already dark environment and that grating sound reminiscent of glass scraping, it felt exceptionally eerie and terrifying.
"Takahashi Kiyoshi!" The words came out of Shinoda Kenichi's mouth through gritted teeth, filled with anger but even more with fear.
"Ha ha! You're scared! I can feel it! Don't worry; it won't be long before we become one!" The raspy voice grew increasingly arrogant.
"Power! This is the taste of power! If I had known he had such good stuff, I would have acted sooner! Ha ha!"
Yang Xiaoyou, who had been quietly listening to their conversation, felt a shift in her eyes upon hearing this. 'Things? Act?'
"Indeed, his infection is problematic. It seems it didn't just appear after the outbreak; was the virus injected before it? Looks like he took the initiative to inject himself! What a lunatic!"
Connecting the dots from what was said, Yang Xiaoyou's heart flashed with surprise. It seemed she had pressured Nobunaga Hideyoshi too much regarding this fellow, leading him to acquire a strange virus through unknown channels for self-injection.
There weren't many examples of humans voluntarily injecting themselves with a virus to join the ranks of infected beings, but each case was particularly dangerous. If caught early in their infection phase, they could still be hunted down relatively easily due to their initial weaknesses.
However, if given enough time to recover and enhance their deficiencies with nutrients, they often became far more terrifying than typical infected beings like Huang Jing.
If she wasn't mistaken, this infected being was one of those elite types whose remaining lifespan had been compressed from twenty years down to ten—far beyond what a useless being like Sun Jun could compare to.
"Relying on Bait to suddenly explode? Tch, I was originally going to save this big Sponsor, but since it's such a dangerous thing, we'll have to see if he has the luck to survive." After making the decision, a flicker appeared in Yang Xiaoyou's eyes.
With just Nobunaga Hideyoshi and the others directly facing that dangerous entity, injuries were inevitable. Yang Xiaoyou couldn't accept any of his three subordinates getting hurt. Since that was the case, he might as well abandon Shinoda Kenichi to some extent, using him as Bait to lure out that empty fellow. If he could survive after the lure, that would be best; if not, it would just be his fate.
Just as Yang Xiaoyou had made this decision and was preparing to take action, another figure suddenly dropped down from above.
Seeing the blood-stained suit, Qian Kai and the others had learned their lesson after their previous encounter. They quickly shifted their attention to their surroundings, guarding against any surprise attacks.
However, as Yang Xiaoyou looked at the falling Suit Shadow, he instinctively entered a state of Cognitive Acceleration, feeling an extreme Sense of Crisis towards that figure.
Without any hesitation, taking advantage of the Cognitive Acceleration state, he raised his hand and fired a series of shots at the falling figure.
The spiraling bullets shot out, carving a twisted path through the air. Just as they were about to hit the figure, what seemed like a lifeless Suit Shadow suddenly erupted into action, bouncing away from Yang Xiaoyou's lethal shots.
It took several hits on its limbs.
Fortunately, although it dodged the critical shots, the impact from those that did hit caused it to stumble upon landing, successfully redirecting everyone's attention back to it.
Beneath that suit revealed a horrifying figure drenched in Crimson, unmistakably that creature! The taste had vanished; everything tasted the same—what a miserable fate.
