A strange, sharp, and awkward sound, reminiscent of grinding, emerged from the severed neck. "My head! How dare you harm my head! Unforgivable!"
The nauseating voice that seemed to come from nowhere sent chills down the spines of everyone present.
As the words faded, a burst of yellow-green slime erupted from the broken neck, releasing a dozen thick tentacles. These tentacles were still smeared with fragments of what appeared to be a shattered skull, as if they were trying to splice themselves back together.
However, it was evident that some scattered pieces were beyond recovery. In the end, only a few tentacles managed to awkwardly piece together half of a vacant face at the top.
Yet the mouth continued to move in sync with the voice, revealing a mix of horror and absurdity.
As those tentacles flailed through the air, they produced a howling sound, showcasing their immense strength. This transformation caused several nearby individuals to turn pale.
After tentatively shooting down two tentacles, Yang Xiaoyou ceased fire and maintained a safe distance while keeping an eye on the creature.
Although the tentacles had been severed and the creature screamed as if injured, there were only five bullets left in their chamber.
Clang!
Fortunately, at that moment, the combined powers of Shadow of Death and Lucas began to pry open the cage, which had been cut down to a quarter of its original size.
The sound of twisted steel gave everyone present a surge of motivation.
The seasoned Interpol agent quickly made his way over to assist. It was clear he could no longer intervene in the standoff between the two.
"Your 'informant' is truly twisted," Hakim remarked as he joined in helping to pry open the gap. He emphasized the word "informant" with a peculiar expression while glancing at the beautiful agent who followed closely behind him.
The two high-explosive grenades that had been strapped to him now appeared in his hands.
Since both men had been focused on assisting with opening the door, Lucas hadn’t witnessed Hakim’s almost supernatural shooting ability. Although he knew about the headshot, it didn’t leave as deep an impression on him as it did on Hakim.
"His marksmanship is quite good, just keep it up. Alright, hey! Xiaoyou, hurry up! Don't pay attention to that monster!" Lucas shouted anxiously at Yang Xiaoyou while tearing the opening wide enough for a person to pass through.
Regardless of his shooting skills, based on his performance so far, he was one of the company's top talents and could not be abandoned here.
"I don't think that's possible. He's locked onto me; coming over would only make it more dangerous. Leave those two behind, you all go first. I'll find a way to shake off this fellow," Yang Xiaoyou sighed as he sensed the completely inhuman fury approaching.
With his body still injured, any attempt to escape would expose him to greater danger. He had a higher resistance to the surrounding gases compared to others and wasn't in as much of a rush. He had some leverage.
Before he could finish speaking, an unnatural tremor shook the entrance. A stone gate, resembling a large slab, began to lower slowly, revealing a mechanism!
Unlike the barred gates with gaps, this stone door was clearly designed to seal off the gas completely. It seemed intent on trapping everyone inside.
Although the mechanism moved slowly due to its weight, the expressions of those at the entrance changed drastically.
"Get out first! Otherwise, none of us will make it! Afifah, I’m sorry to ask you to wait with these two; don’t worry, he’ll definitely get you out!"
He shoved a grenade into the hands of Afifah, who hadn’t been able to help at all during their journey, and then gently pushed her aside. Hakim urged Lucas and Shadow of Death through the descending stone door.
Both Lucas and Shadow of Death were decisive individuals; if someone had to make a sacrifice, it should be meaningful—not just for nothing.
Especially for Shadow of Death, Heart understood his master well. If he were alone, his chances of survival would be quite high. However, if something happened to him, Heart knew he wouldn’t survive either. Although he appeared expressionless and resolute, Shadow of Death was undoubtedly the one most worried about Yang Xiaoyou's safety.
Afifah, who had been pushed aside, seemed frantic and wanted to rush forward, but the stone door was already descending rapidly; taking that risk could mean being crushed.
In that brief moment of hesitation, she lost her last chance to escape and felt as if she were about to collapse.
Seeing that they had left behind a bait for her benefit, Yang Xiaoyou felt somewhat speechless about Interpol's goodwill. While such bait was effective in battles against farmers, it seemed rather useless against this fellow before them.
What made it even more frustrating was that he hadn’t anticipated encountering such a seemingly indestructible door. Initially intending to stall for time and find an opportunity to slip away directly now seemed completely impossible.
But the descending stone door did not affect Yang Xiaoyou's combat state. Since there was no way to escape, she needed to focus her attention on the immediate situation.
"Is there a voyeuristic fellow who has been watching this place? How interesting. You are merely their experimental subject and toy," Yang Xiaoyou remarked casually, glancing at several hidden cameras.
At the same time, her eyes quickly began analyzing the large figure before her, hoping to find its weak point. Her own resistance was far inferior to that of her opponent, and if this dragged on, she would be at a disadvantage given her injured state.
Yang Xiaoyou's words not only reached the ears of the Gray Robed Figure, now transformed into a Tentacle Monster, but also transmitted through the surrounding cameras to a monitoring room.
"Damn it. That bastard fellow controlling the Crawlers didn’t forget to sabotage us before leaving, causing the mechanisms to just recover now. We lost a few rare experimental subjects; their strength could produce warriors not much weaker than this Insect Emperor!" A man with a nose ring appeared somewhat exasperated upon seeing only two cats left behind.
"No, no, no. The value of an experimental subject lies in its quality, not quantity. The new data and achievements we gain from our Insect Emperor are worth more than all those farmers combined. And I am very interested in that prey who could push the Insect Emperor to such an extent! Increase the dosage of the agent. Don’t hold back; follow me to prepare for inoculation," said a Bishop in monk robes, his voice raspy. He then turned and led his team down another underground passage.
"How many bullets do you have left? Let me think... twelve? Or maybe five? Hehehe!" The Tentacle Monster, with its face slowly spliced together, cackled as it realized its prey had no way out.
"You can come over and try if you want," Yang Xiaoyou replied, her gaze locking onto several suspected vital points of her opponent like a precise radar, ultimately focusing on the quivering tentacles.
Aside from being the main body of the parasite, those dozen or so Tentacles were also a significant combat factor.
"Hmph, I admit your marksmanship is the best I've seen. But once you run out of bullets, what can you do? Five bullets can't possibly deal a fatal blow to me! Give up resisting and merge with me willingly," taunted the Tentacle Monster in its disgusting voice as it began to move closer.
"Has no one ever told you? Your voice is truly repulsive." With a flicker in her eyes as if she could see right through him, Yang Xiaoyou made one last provocative move before raising her hand without hesitation and pulling the trigger.
On the other side, the already agitated Gray Robed Tentacle Monster let out a shriek and disregarded any potential damage to its body as it lunged toward Yang Xiaoyou with terrifying speed!
"Out of bullets! Let's see what you can do now! Accept your death!" After successfully shooting off eight Tentacles with five bullets, the Gray Robed Monster charged right in front of Yang Xiaoyou. Seeing that she had emptied her gun, it threw the handgun aside like a piece of meat ready for slaughter, while its remaining tentacles secreted a viscous substance resembling saliva.
"Actually..." Yang Xiaoyou stepped sideways naturally and grabbed hold of its arm while tilting her head back to evade an attacking tentacle.
Using the momentum from its charge, she swung her other hand back and slammed the bulky body—made heavier by the tentacles bursting from its head—against the wall like a cannonball.
The massive impact sent dust flying everywhere!
The entire Mutated Monster resembled a mural.
At the same time, he stepped forward, his right hand transforming into a palm as he pressed it against the opponent's chest. In that instant, it was as if his palm was a whirlpool in a raging sea, crazily sucking in and compressing the surrounding air.
As he seemingly pressed lightly against the opponent's chest, a distorted wave of air exploded outward from the point of contact, creating a bizarre tear in the opponent's windbreaker.
"Crack!"
A dull sound that sent chills down one's spine emanated from where he pressed down, causing the entire wall behind to tremble and dust to fall.
The head Tentacle, which had initially intended to counterattack, twitched as if struck by lightning after receiving that blow. Some disgusting slime burst forth from its tendrils, allowing Yang Xiaoyou to retreat calmly and dodge the whip-like attack.
Just as he dodged, the tendril lashed out fiercely, striking the ground with such force that it left spiderweb-like cracks on the granite surface, its power astonishing.
However, the fellow pinned against the wall staggered a couple of steps but could still see a clear imprint of Yang Xiaoyou's palm where it had penetrated his chest cavity.
"I'm not bad at close combat either."
Seeing that he had taken advantage of the situation while his opponent was caught off guard and that his explosive strike had not resulted in an immediate kill, Yang Xiaoyou teased with a hint of sarcasm. Yet, his expression grew more serious as he realized the stakes.
