"Five seconds," Yang Xiaoyou said weakly, sitting on the ground and wiping the cold sweat from his forehead that had appeared due to the pain backlash.
In a state of perfect fusion with his own momentum, he could probably maintain it for about thirty seconds under normal circumstances or when facing opponents weaker than himself.
However, during the test against Feng Lin, that duration rapidly diminished. Now, he could barely guarantee eleven seconds, and that was thanks to the intense training he had undergone during the latter half of summer vacation and this month since school started. Otherwise, at the current rate of consumption, it would likely be a single-digit number.
Sometimes, those crucial few seconds could determine life or death.
What Yang Xiaoyou wanted to achieve now was to switch between different states of momentum more freely, allowing him to control when to unleash his power during combat.
Unfortunately, if he were facing an opponent weaker than himself, it wouldn't be a problem. But against peak experts like Feng Lin and Luo Guohui, who had suppressed him by an entire level, the pull of their momentum exceeded his control. If he forced himself to withdraw, it would likely expose even greater flaws or lead to even more consumption.
When contending at this level, once he entered a state of momentum fusion, forcing himself out would mean that regardless of how much he had consumed, he wouldn't be able to re-enter that state in a short time. This phenomenon left him feeling somewhat regretful.
However, having already drawn Feng Lin's sword while still at a disadvantage with his own weapon and being able to engage in direct confrontation proved that his strength during that period indeed retained some semblance of his former prowess.
Seeing Yang Xiaoyou lying on the ground unable to get up, Feng Lin also sat beside him with her sword in hand, lost in thought. She didn't urge him or help him stand; she simply stayed quietly by his side.
Inhaling the faint fragrance reminiscent of orchids in a quiet valley, a smile of comfort appeared on Yang Xiaoyou's face. Moments like these were when his mind felt most at ease, making it hard for him to pull away.
Thinking about what was said in Dream Butterfly regarding personalities, perhaps only someone as pure-hearted as Feng Lin could notice that subtle presence akin to an ethereal spirit.
"Report to the king."
At that moment, Yang Xiaoyou's phone rang unexpectedly, causing him to feel a bit helpless.
Just as he took it out, a shadow swiftly struck down onto his Nokia phone, sending its components flying and rendering it completely unusable.
Looking at the broken phone in his hand and then at Feng Lin naturally sheathing her sword, Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but twitch his mouth in frustration.
"Slipped my hand."
As if sensing Yang Xiaoyou's gaze, Feng Lin tilted her head and stared at him for a moment before speaking calmly.
"Hey hey, although I owe you a favor, you shouldn't treat me like this. We came all this way and still have some things you asked us to handle. You let us take a month to gather more people; I listened. Doing this now is just too inconsiderate. After all, I'm a core member." After picking up Lucas, she hadn't stopped talking along the way, appearing quite chatty.
Yang Xiaoyou felt a bit embarrassed as she realized that her group of fellows had been waiting for her for quite some time while she was busy switching cards and getting a new phone.
Aside from Lucas, who had collaborated with Yang Xiaoyou before, even Fein, who usually had a good temper, seemed to have some opinions about the delay. The other members who were close to reaching the next level also appeared dissatisfied. Among the formal members, the Elite looked particularly displeased.
For them, as long as they could break through to the next stage and pass the assessment afterward, they could be considered core members in preparation. Generally, aside from respecting the core group of Freaks, they all held their own pride.
Although Lucas, as the team leader of this core group mission, had boasted about Yang Xiaoyou's terrifying strategic abilities along the way, this 'show of authority' had left a very poor first impression on them.
Feeling somewhat disgruntled by all the praise, their frustration only intensified now.
Fortunately, Hive Security Company maintained a principle of being selective rather than lax when it came to personnel screening. So while they felt bad inside, they did not express it outwardly.
Internal members could certainly compete, but the competition was naturally focused on mission completion rates and performance levels rather than dragging each other down or scheming against one another.
Maintaining healthy internal competition was beneficial for the company's vitality. In this environment, several individuals had already begun to secretly prepare for action.
Yang Xiaoyou understood this group of unruly fellows well; she indeed had messed up this time. All she could do was continuously apologize along the way and briefly explain her reasons.
"Can a phone really break? Your shooting skills seem pretty good; if you can drop your phone like that, how do you handle a gun?" Lucas questioned skeptically upon hearing her excuse.
"Uh, it broke because someone bumped into me and knocked it out of my hand."
"Did you make him pay for it?"
"No."
"Then tell me who it was; I'll help you settle this. We’ve been waiting here forever because of him." Lucas started off sounding like he was being chivalrous, but his true intentions were revealed in the latter half of his statement.
Hearing this from him made Yang Xiaoyou respond with a deadpan expression and a forced smile.
As a mercenary, Lucas had his fair share of flaws. However, one quality that Yang Xiaoyou valued greatly was his willingness to accept others' opinions and his understanding of his own shortcomings. Whenever he led a team, he would follow reasonable suggestions from his partners.
This single trait was enough to compensate for most of his weaknesses and allowed him to handle various missions effectively.
Of course, this was only true when he had a partner by his side.
So in the end, he still gave up on the idea of "finding a venue" under Yang Xiaoyou's persuasion.
"By the way, why do we have to wait a month just because of a gang leader? Is there something wrong with that elusive gang leader himself? Although Hong Kong is quite fun, it can also be rather dull. I did meet a few other gang leaders there; I must say, there are some capable people." After setting aside the matter of "finding a venue," Lucas began to recount some of his experiences, fully embracing his talkative nature.
"Mei has already taken him out. How could such an incident possibly have such a significant impact on us? This is our main mission," Yang Xiaoyou then systematically explained to them the situations they might face and briefly organized some relationships for their understanding.
Even though Lucas and Fein had spent some time in the Chinese Empire last time, they still lacked understanding of this mysterious land.
"Alright, that seems somewhat reasonable. But did Charming Shadow manage to infiltrate alone? Without Shadow of Death's cooperation, how well can she perform?" Due to frequently partnering with Shadow of Death and his own talkative nature, Lucas had learned a bit about their unique traits.
He knew that Shadow of Death had overcome his obsession with protection and significantly increased his strength, but he was unsure if Charming Shadow had done the same.
"The situation isn't as dire as you might think. Her profession is an assassin, not a mercenary; she doesn't consider using force for everything." After rubbing his head, Yang Xiaoyou looked at Blackie with a wry smile.
Although it seemed like muscle had grown into his brain, he still appeared to be quite the curious child, asking questions here and there.
Of course, he was a rather peculiar-looking child.
The outside was filled with fireworks, while the family was watching the evening show, creating a sense of bittersweet melancholy.
