The night had slowly descended upon the Eastern Coast of Africa, specifically Mombasa. The sea breeze carried its distinct fishy scent, brushing against the busy people hustling about for their livelihoods. Kate and Reiko stood by the harbor, scanning the horizon. They had just received a notification from their superior department that a colleague was arriving. However, the contact information provided was useless, leaving them to wait idly at the harbor based on the ship's arrival time mentioned in the notice.
“Reiko, let me hold it!” Kate said as she took the sign from Reiko's hands and raised it high. The sign read: Welcome to our new colleague from the research institute. Since they didn’t even know what the person looked like, this was their only option.
“Do you think we’re being fooled? We look like two fools standing here,” Reiko replied.
“Is news sent directly from home going to be fake?” In Africa, members of the research institute often referred to their institute in Lion City as home.
“Oh well, we’ll just wait,” Reiko said playfully, winking before pretending to seriously gaze into the distance.
Gu Hai hadn’t felt so helpless in a long time. At that moment, when he saw Da Kui running towards him, covered in blood and terrified, he too began to panic.
“Calm down!” Gu Hai’s voice trembled slightly. He knew Da Kui’s character; even if he were on the brink of death, he wouldn’t behave like this. But now Da Kui’s eyes were dull, as if he had encountered something far more terrifying than death itself.
“They ate Black, they ate Old Seven, and I don’t know who else! I ran away! I left them behind! I was scared! They’re monsters—man-eating monsters!” Da Kui had started crying, a forty-year-old man covering his face in despair, not knowing whether it was sorrow or fear.
“All units prepare for battle!” Gu Hai shouted angrily, a stark contrast to his usual calm demeanor. Perhaps he needed to motivate himself at this moment.
Fortunately, the mercenaries adhered to their principle of always being armed. At their captain's command, weapons were drawn in unison. Everyone was ready, yet no one was truly prepared. They had killed wealthy individuals, officials, underworld bosses, women—even tigers and lions. But those were all creatures they could see and understand. Now they faced something entirely different—humans or human-like monsters?
“Zombies!” Lin Yi shouted, voicing his long-held nightmare—something he had never wanted to mention. He thought he would never see such things again, but now that many living dead appeared before him, he felt that the world couldn’t possibly be this surreal.
“Fire! Act like men!” Gu Hai bellowed as he opened fire first. Although his firepower wasn’t overwhelming, it was more than sufficient for close-range targets.
In an instant, gunfire erupted—perhaps out of fear or despair. Everyone screamed and fired as if venting their emotions; each expression was fierce and grim. But soon they discovered a horrifying reality: those zombies were seemingly invincible. No matter how many bullets struck them or how many limbs were blown off, their bodies continued to writhe.
“Damn it! Not only do they look weird, but they’re also so tough!” The Pale-Faced Man shot at a zombie’s head, creating a large hole in its skull; yet it merely swayed and kept advancing.
“Damn it! Watch me blow its head off with my Flower Cannon!” Flower Cannon added another shot at the zombie targeted by the Pale-Faced Man.
With a loud bang, the zombie’s head fell to the ground. Flower Cannon nervously glanced at the fallen zombie; astonishingly, it continued moving forward!
“I’m done! I’m out!” Flower Cannon felt a chill run down his spine.
“Look! The one Brother Bai shot is dead!” Jiao Jiao exclaimed excitedly.
“Brothers! Aim for their heads!”
At that moment, Gu Hai realized that the headless Zombie was truly dead and unable to move. Everyone quickly understood that the best way to kill a Zombie was to shoot it in the head.
The team was filled with skilled marksmen, and once they found the method to eliminate the Zombies, they swiftly took down all the Zombies crawling out from the room.
"Hahaha, we Blood Wolves are invincible!" Flower Cannon whistled and shouted to everyone, as he was likely the first to kill a Zombie.
"Roar~" Before anyone could start celebrating, a deep yet exceptionally clear roar echoed, reminiscent of a beast in the mountains.
Everyone exchanged worried glances, realizing something was wrong.
"Black!" Yellow-Toothed Man suddenly shouted and prepared to charge forward. Fortunately, Flower Cannon reacted quickly and pulled Yellow-Toothed Man back.
Everyone was drawn to Yellow-Toothed Man's shout and followed his gaze.
"Damn!" Someone spat on the ground fiercely, trying to mask their fear.
Ruan Hei was no longer Ruan Hei. His once waxy yellow skin was now drenched in fresh blood, and his frail body had no intact parts left. His clothes were torn into strips, and his body bore numerous bite marks, with white bones faintly visible. The flesh had likely been consumed by other Zombies, and Ruan Hei's originally bright eyes were now completely replaced by whites. Tilting his head, his blood-stained face seemed filled with confusion. He appeared to be pondering where he had seen the people before and what they might taste like.
"Quick, quick, kill him! He’s been infected; he will eat people!" Lin Yi's nerves had finally acclimated to this kind of shock. As they say, practice makes perfect; this wasn't his first encounter with such a scene.
Everyone knew Lin Yi was serious, but shooting at their former teammate made them hesitate. Gu Hai understood that they couldn't act on impulse. He waved his hand, his eyes slightly reddening with sympathy.
However, not everyone felt that way. Just as they decided to shoot Ruan Hei, he—oh no, it should be "it"—suddenly charged forward at an incredible speed. Before anyone could react, Ruan Hei had already lunged at the nearest person. Before the victim could scream, Ruan Hei swiftly bit into their face.
"Ah~~~" The person bitten by Ruan Hei screamed in agony as they tried to push it away, but it seemed glued to them; no matter how hard they struggled, it was futile.
"Help—help..." Before they could finish their sentence, the person who had been desperately fighting back collapsed like a deflated balloon against Ruan Hei.
Everything happened in an instant. Before anyone could fully grasp the reality of Ruan Hei's transformation into a corpse, they witnessed this former comrade brutally kill another teammate. Once Ruan Hei seemed satisfied with its meal, it discarded its prey and began searching for its next target.
"What are you waiting for? Kill it!" Gu Hai was the first to snap out of shock and fear; he raised his weapon and began firing at Ruan Hei's head. To his surprise, this already dead Ruan Hei managed to dodge. With just a few quick movements, it lunged at another target.
"Hurry up! Focus your fire and shoot!" Jiao Jiao also began shouting from the side, whether out of fear or newfound courage.
The attacks came one after another. While everyone aimed and fired wildly at Ruan Hei, more figures appeared at the entrance—one, two, three—until seven emerged in total if those who had been bitten and were left as mere skeletons could still be called "people."
"Old Seven!"
“Twisted Mouth!”
In shock, everyone shouted the names of their former companions, but at that moment, those people were no longer on the same side as them. Their condition was even worse than that of “Ruan Hei”; at least “Ruan Hei” still resembled a human. However, the ones that emerged now had been so mangled that their faces were unrecognizable, with the little flesh remaining on their cheeks torn away to reveal stark white bones. Yet they continued to growl, preparing for a new beginning.
“They’ve all been infected; they’re no longer human! You have to kill them quickly, or we’re all doomed!” Lin Yi was on the verge of breaking down. There was no time to think about anything else; the only way to survive was through slaughter!
Gu Hai glanced at Lin Yi, seemingly understanding something. He made a gesture for concentrated fire and was the first to start shooting at “Ruan Hei.”
Everyone had gone completely insane; they were all mad, unable to let their guns rest for even a second. Even changing magazines took far longer than usual, and smoke began to rise from the gun barrels. Despite wrapping their hands in heat-resistant cloth, they were burned enough to grit their teeth in pain. At that moment, they forgot everything they saw before them; all they did was shoot, continuously releasing bullets. The former teammates before them had long since lost their humanity, yet as long as their heads remained attached to their bodies, they charged recklessly toward the crowd. But no matter how strong their bodies were, they were ultimately just flesh and blood, and under the fierce assault of Iron Torrent, they became nothing more than a puddle of gore.
“How many are left?” Gu Hai was the first to regain his composure and asked Da Kui beside him.
“I don’t know how many there are; I can’t see the end,” Da Kui replied blankly.
Everyone suddenly felt a chill run down their spines as they looked at the setting sun, feeling for the first time how terrifying the night could be.
On the topmost level of the ship, there were only three exits leading to the deck. Just moments ago, the Zombie had come out from the middle exit. Now everyone was tightly focused on those exits, filled with both hope and fear.
“Boss, look! There’s a boat on the deck! We’re saved!” Suddenly pointing toward the ship's edge, Hai exclaimed after remaining silent for so long.
