Lin Yi considered himself a rational person, someone who could face any situation with the best mindset. However, reality was not as simple as he imagined. In the face of life and death, his so-called excellent qualities seemed laughable. Lin Yi could no longer suppress the anger boiling within him; he felt he had been played.
Slo did not respond to his calls at all. He couldn't understand why, even if Reagan had taken Commander hostage, the people of the entire city couldn't spare a moment to open the door for them.
It must be that the other side wanted to eliminate them. They were jealous of their formidable combat abilities and feared that they would replace them. It had to be this way; Reagan must have realized this situation before taking their Commander hostage! The more Lin Yi thought about it, the angrier he became. Although he wielded Silver Soul with great fervor, his strikes were completely off-target, failing to take down a single Zombie.
Within the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group, only a few individuals truly possessed combat strength. In such a confined space, they could barely hold off the Zombies. Yet, with the enemy continuously replenishing their numbers, no matter how strong they were, they would eventually be worn down.
Wu Hao watched Lin Yi's growing agitation and felt a sense of dread. His only advantage was his ability to sense others' emotional fluctuations and understand what they were thinking. At that moment, Lin Yi's mind was consumed with worry for Li Qiweng and an escalating hatred. Wu Hao knew that if the leader of a team could not remain calm, they would inevitably be taken down by their enemies.
Suddenly, an idea struck Wu Hao. He quickly approached Douglas and whispered, "Can you control a Giant Zombie and keep it from moving?" At that moment, Douglas could only use his increasingly powerful mental energy to hurl those Giant Zombies against the walls with force. However, this method was not very effective; each time he merely threw the Zombies at the wall without guaranteeing a fatal blow.
"This is somewhat difficult; their strength is immense, but I can give it a try!" Douglas said, sweat pouring down his face, his originally dark complexion now showing an unnatural pallor.
Wu Hao told Douglas to wait and then ran over to Jerry, who was currently trying to control a Giant Zombie using his abilities. However, there wasn't enough power around him to assist; despite his efforts, he still saw little success.
"Jerry, when Douglas manages to restrain the Zombie's movements, you need to control the Giant Zombie's mind as quickly as possible!" Wu Hao darted back and forth; he might be the one in the Mercenary Group who understood Ability Users best.
The plan was set; Douglas and Jerry immediately began their first collaboration.
At this moment, Giant Zombies appeared only occasionally, but their combat power was formidable. The Giant Zombie Jerry attempted to control gradually lost its ability to move under Douglas's mental influence.
"Come on, man! Put in more effort; it's shaking too much!" Although Jerry worked hard to control the Zombie, his strength alone was limited and could not achieve instant control. He thought of his grandfather High Priest Pearl, who could instantly control dozens of giant crocodiles alongside all his adept tribesmen—such feats were indeed impressive.
Douglas bit his lip tightly as beads of sweat formed a line down his increasingly pale face. The Giant Zombie posed a lethal threat to them due to its fierce combat capabilities. Everything depended on Douglas's condition; human mental energy was a mysterious thing—perhaps Douglas could create another miracle!
The Giant Zombie struggled fiercely while Jerry continued trying to control it. To increase his attack power, he even strained himself to chant ancient words passed down through generations in his tribe. The obscure ancient language was quite challenging for Jerry as a novice; nevertheless, he had no choice but to give it his all—it was a fight for survival.
Efforts would eventually yield some results. Although the Giant Zombie continued to shake violently, its originally ferocious gaze gradually softened.
"Go back and kill them!" The ethereal voice escaped from Jerry's lips, distant yet clear.
Under the control of the voice, the Giant Zombie swiftly turned around, its massive hand grabbing a regular Zombie and tearing it apart with a fierce pull. In an instant, the unfortunate Zombie was split in two before it even realized what was happening.
Watching the splattered innards, Douglas and Jerry felt a chill despite their relief at having controlled the Giant Zombie.
Perhaps due to the presence of its companions, the Giant Zombie faced no opposition while battling the regular Zombies.
"Come on, you two! Keep it up! If we can control a few more, we should be safe!" Wu Hao thought to himself, pleased with his cleverness upon seeing this outcome.
"Hao Ge, I can't do it anymore. I already exhausted a lot of mental energy to fully control that Zombie just now. With what I've spent before, I'm not sure I can control another one!" Douglas waved his hand dismissively, his body swaying as if he might collapse at any moment.
Wu Hao frowned upon hearing this news. Just then, as they were contemplating how to deal with their current crisis, three more Giant Zombies charged out of the darkness. It seemed they had coordinated their attack, rushing towards the Zombie controlled by Jerry. Any Zombies in their path were kicked aside; their target was clearly the Giant Zombie attacking its own companions!
"This is bad; they're going to destroy that Zombie!" Douglas couldn't bear to watch as the hard-won control over the Zombie was about to be shattered.
But reality was cruel. The three Zombies flanked the entranced Zombie, and one of them swung a metal rod, smashing its head until it burst open!
Wu Hao and the others could hardly bear to look. However, things were far from simple. As they pondered how to deal with the newly arrived three Zombies, even more Giant Zombies emerged from the darkness.
It was over—completely over. This was everyone's first thought upon seeing these Zombies; an unprecedented sense of helplessness washed over them.
Lin Yi witnessed this scene too; everyone did. Li Qiweng, who had carved out a space around herself, was also stunned by the newly appeared Giant Zombies.
There were too many—seemingly endless and densely packed, just looking at them was terrifying.
"Wen, fall back!" Lin Yi shouted, his previously anxious emotions now under control. Yes, faced with this deadly situation, he could only cling to a belief in inevitable death! Since he no longer feared death itself, any negative emotions became irrelevant.
Li Qiweng quickly retreated; the Zombies she had just killed nearly filled the passageway. The ones behind had to climb over their fallen companions' remains to get closer.
"Concentrate all firepower and give them our last bullet!" Lin Yi had already pulled out the last Potential Gene Drug, ready for one final gamble.
"Bang! Bang!"
The sound of gunfire echoed continuously in the confined space, shaking everyone to their core, as if their hearts were about to burst from the intensity.
The battle had turned into a war of attrition, and the deafening roar seemed to be the last elegy sung by the Mercenary group. With the final gunshot ringing out, everyone instinctively drew their blades from behind.
Facing death without fear, perhaps that was what it meant.
Suddenly, a low scraping sound came from behind them. Though it was unpleasant to hear, their hearts soared with joy! They had finally opened the door; there was hope for survival!
Those who had planned to charge forward immediately turned around to look. The door had indeed been opened!
Lin Yi wanted to rush over immediately but had to stop in his tracks. They were still facing attacks from the Zombies; if they all ran back at once, it would be a dead end. Fortunately, they were already close to the door. As soon as it opened wide enough for one person to pass through, Jiao Jiao Ling Zi and others quickly dashed through.
Lin Yi, along with Li Qiweng and Pachy, faced the Zombies while retreating defensively. The distance of several dozen meters was actually quite short; with a single sweep of his blade, Li Qiweng bought them a few extra seconds to fall back. After about ten seconds, everyone managed to push into the fortress.
Although a few Zombies had followed them inside, most were still blocked outside. The few that had come in were instantly surrounded by their fury and quickly reduced to nothing but a pile of rotten flesh.
Just as they breathed a sigh of relief, they noticed something strange about the situation inside the city. Everyone was staring at Lin Yi and his group with eyes full of fear and helplessness.
Not a single familiar face was in sight—no Slo, no Mandray.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi shouted, realizing something was off as he noticed everyone was armed and seemed ready for a fight.
"Hahaha, you’re all prepared to become Zombies, aren’t you? I think you’ll thank me for this; I have granted you eternal life!"
The arrogant laughter echoed through the entire fortress via the loudspeaker.
Lin Yi and the others turned pale; that voice was all too familiar, after spending so much time together.
"It's Reagan. What does he mean by that?" Wu Hao, whose thoughts were the most delicate among them, instantly recognized the owner of the voice!
"He wants to turn everyone into Zombies!" Suddenly, a figure pushed through the crowd—it was Slo, the one Lin Yi had secretly cursed countless times.
"What does that mean? Does he not want to live?" Lin Yi couldn't understand how such a foolish idea of becoming a Zombie could come from Reagan. Didn't he realize that becoming a Zombie meant losing one's life?
"I don't know. After you all left, he went to find the Commander with a good idea about achieving immortality for everyone. But how could the Commander listen to his nonsense? He thought Reagan had gone mad with fear. However, just as the Commander was about to capture him, Reagan suddenly rushed forward and grabbed him! I never expected him to be able to fly. Later, he even called himself the Savior, and surprisingly, many ignorant people believed him and wanted to follow him!"
Slo rubbed his temples, seemingly in great pain, and continued, "But that's not the worst part. The most terrifying thing is that a large number of Zombies suddenly appeared here. Caught off guard, many people have already been infected with the virus! Now the city center has fallen under Reagan's control; it has become a paradise for Zombies! When we opened the door to escape, we found that you had already come in. It seems this battle is unavoidable!"
As Lin Yi and his group listened to Slo's account, they were deeply shaken. What exactly did Reagan intend to do? The so-called immortality was impossible; everything has its moment of demise.
The battle must continue because of Reagan's incredible ambitions!
