A sudden thunderclap erupted, leaving everyone stunned, their scientific beliefs challenged in an unexpected way.
Even someone like Augustus found it hard to believe. He had expected Lin Yi to bring the head of a smart Zombie to complete his mission, but he never anticipated the words that followed. However, Augustus had encountered many secretive individuals and quickly composed himself.
"Mr. Lin, are you trying to take advantage of my old age? Is there really such a thing as immortality in this world?" Augustus stepped back a few paces, signaling others to move closer. Lin Yi was undoubtedly a dangerous person, and in this situation, he could explode at any moment.
"I can prove it to you, but I don't like having soldiers pointing guns at me. You know, someone like me isn't known for having a good temper," Lin Yi said, deliberately lowering his voice. At that moment, he needed to see his team before taking any further action.
Augustus understood Lin Yi's intentions. However, if he didn't agree, the secret of immortality might slip away. Although the possibility of this information being false was high, even a hint of truth was enough.
Lin Yi remained silent, his eyes thoughtfully scanning the group. Augustus, wise with age, grasped his meaning.
The soldiers quickly retreated. However, with Lin Yi's formidable mental strength, he was aware that many snipers were still lying in wait nearby. But that was fine; what mattered most to him now was time.
"Is it good now?" Augustus stood in the shadows, his voice becoming faint and elusive.
"Getting up might not suit your status; I wonder if you're still willing to listen?" Lin Yi teased but spoke the truth.
Augustus suddenly chuckled eerily, resembling a Bat baring its fangs in the dark night. But soon he asked, "If immortality truly exists, who would care about status?"
Sometimes, when a person's position rises high enough, their perspective changes. Yet those who achieve greatness often fear one thing: death. When nothing in the mundane world can conquer them anymore, the realm of gods becomes something they yearn to touch—like immortality, which is the nemesis of death. Unfortunately, death is too powerful; even time cannot defeat it. Still, when ambition swells to its peak, nothing can stop people from seeking eternal life.
"The way I know is to first become a Zombie and then keep eating people!" Lin Yi relayed Zhao Pei's words almost verbatim to Augustus. He wasn't lying; whether it was true or not was beyond his responsibility!
"Who told you that?" A few seconds later, Augustus emerged from the shadows again, his expression surprisingly calm.
"A talking Zombie!" Lin Yi maintained his honesty, though his demeanor suggested otherwise.
"A Zombie can talk? This world truly is insane!" Augustus looked at Lin Yi with mockery as he assessed whether Lin Yi's words held any truth.
"You know about the intelligent Zombies appearing; so it's not surprising they can talk!" Lin Yi sensed a shift in Augustus's emotions; the murderous intent became increasingly palpable.
"Haha! Talking to Zombies and communicating with humanity's enemies—this is all yours. I think I have the right to send you straight to hell! Hahaha!" Augustus laughed heartily as he raised his arm. Lin Yi felt several dangerous presences lock onto him instantly.
"Don't you think it's too late?" Just as Augustus prepared to order the snipers to fire directly at him, he noticed Lin Yi's fearless demeanor. In the next moment, a dagger suddenly appeared at his throat, seemingly suspended in mid-air over his carotid artery; any movement would mean instant death.
Augustus had never felt death so close before. Strangely enough, he only saw a dagger without any sign of its wielder. He knew Lin Yi possessed special abilities but realized that Lin Yi hadn't made any visible moves. So what kind of bizarre situation was it that this dagger hovered at his neck?
"Let us go, and I won't make things difficult for you. Although my subordinates may have offended you, that is no excuse for your indiscriminate killing of innocents!" Lin Yi could only guess the conflict that must have arisen between Aoling Er and Augustus, even though he hadn't witnessed it firsthand.
"You colluded with the Zombies and expect me to let you off?" Augustus feigned calmness as he looked at Lin Yi, seemingly unfazed by the threat he faced.
Suddenly, Augustus felt a chill at his neck, followed by a sharp pain that made him instinctively gasp. In the next moment, a faint metallic scent of blood reached his nostrils.
"Let's get down from the city wall!" Augustus conceded; he wasn't ready to die yet.
The two of them, along with a dagger, quickly descended to the ground below the wall, but chaos awaited them there. Dozens of soldiers lay groaning in pain, clutching their stomachs, while a dozen others stood nearby, grinning at Lin Yi.
"Boss, we didn't embarrass you this time; we saved ourselves!" Aoling Er said with delight as he looked at Lin Yi. After all, their escape was largely thanks to Aoling Er's efforts.
"Yes, but Woods, your Shadow Brothers performed exceptionally well this time!" When Lin Yi sensed the floating dagger approaching, he knew these people had managed to escape and brought along so many Ability users; they were not easily controlled.
"Give us a boat; we'll leave directly from the Tiber River!" Lin Yi knew that lingering could lead to trouble and made his demands clear. They were right by the river's edge—a perfect opportunity to escape!
Augustus forced a bitter smile; he understood the implications. If he failed this time, it was because he had underestimated these young people!
"The boats are by the river; you can leave whenever you want!" Augustus realized there was no point in arguing further with them; he simply had to comply with their demands.
Lin Yi and his group moved quickly and found a boat within a minute. Many others were also organizing their retreat! Augustus hadn't announced what had happened, so most people were unaware of the situation; they only saw the Archbishop approaching with a solemn expression and his entourage.
Everyone was busy—either escaping or preparing to do so. A few elderly individuals greeted Augustus before quickly boarding a Submarine.
Augustus sighed and pointed to a particular Submarine. "Go ahead; that one was meant for me, but it seems unnecessary now!" The boat was hidden in a dark corner where light barely reached and there were hardly any people around.
Lin Yi smiled as he listened to Augustus. In his mind, Augustus shouldn't be someone so fearful of death.
Augustus's private boat was indeed small, accommodating only about thirty people. However, its interior was quite luxurious, featuring an independent compartment that could fit only one person. Every inch of space on these boats was precious, so dedicating an entire compartment felt wasteful.
"While I'm interested in immortality, it doesn't mean I'm afraid of death. This boat is indeed mine, but it wasn't my personal request!" Augustus seemed unable to tolerate Lin Yi's amused smile and felt compelled to explain himself. He didn't like having to justify his actions because he believed they were right; yet now he found himself changing.
Lin Yi awkwardly smiled and directed everyone into the boat. Due to the dim lighting, few noticed what was happening; remarkably, Lin Yi's group managed to board without issue!
"Let's go together!" Lin Yi finally pulled Augustus along, intending to bring him into the boat.
"I can't leave!" Augustus suddenly became stubborn, resembling an old man throwing a tantrum.
"You won't leave unless you follow us!" Lin Yi frowned, already prepared to take forceful action.
Augustus suddenly raised his chin and said, "Unless you kill me, I will never leave this place. Someone just saw me come here, and my departure would cause panic!"
Lin Yi was curious about how this old man could be so afraid of death one moment and then disregard his own life the next.
"We have to go!" Lin Yi was ready to subdue him. He had just been busy organizing everyone to board the boat and was only a few steps away from Augustus.
Suddenly, Augustus let out a few loud laughs, then threw a dark object from his hand directly towards the entrance of the boat. At that moment, most people had already entered the boat, leaving only Lin Yi and Woods behind!
"Not good, that's a grenade!" Woods, being the closest to his Shadow Brothers, immediately sensed something was wrong and shouted out. However, he wasn't Lin Yi and couldn't react as quickly!
Lin Yi's head buzzed; he was still over ten meters away from the grenade. Even if he rushed over, he would only end up embracing it and dying together!
At that moment, an unexpected turn of events occurred. A shadow suddenly emerged from beside Augustus and grabbed the grenade that was about to be thrown into the entrance.
Lin Yi's mental energy had already spread out, and he recognized who that figure was—it was Bai Zai, the Drunken-Nose Old Man they had seen on the western front!
"Don't!" Lin Yi almost shouted instinctively, but that figure had already jumped into the river with the grenade in hand!
