The golden sunlight spread across the land, as if it had coated this desolate world with a layer of sacred brilliance. Lin Yi stood in the sunlight, arms outstretched, eyes closed, savoring this rare moment.
"Brother-in-law, Dad agreed to your and my sister's matter, right?" Before Lin Yi could fully stretch, a hearty voice suddenly called out.
Lin Yi recalled the earlier scene and couldn't help but smile. He thought Bruh didn't know him well, but it turned out that Bruh had already investigated his situation thoroughly. After he mentioned Lin Yi leaving Li Qiweng, Bruh went straight upstairs without continuing the conversation. It seemed that Bruh was quite satisfied with his son-in-law; he just needed to help his daughter eliminate a rival.
"Ashan, where's your sister?" Lin Yi only saw Ashan but couldn't find Ying Sa, prompting his curiosity.
Ashan, with a physique like a mountain, took a few steps closer to Lin Yi and said, "She went to visit an injured friend." Lin Yi nodded in understanding; he knew where Ying Sa had gone.
Initially, Lin Yi wanted Ashan to join him outside, but Ashan preferred to stay in the two-story house, so Lin Yi didn't press the issue further.
On the way back, Lin Yi felt an overwhelming sense of happiness that came too quickly. If it weren't for Li Qiweng, he would have unhesitatingly chosen Ying Sa. But reality always presented various choices, and Lin Yi could only make one.
When Lin Yi returned to their lodging building, many people were still asleep. Ying Sa had evidently just arrived as well; however, she didn't enter the house but was directing two women and two men in some tasks.
"Brother, you're here," Ying Sa said with a normal expression. Yet Lin Yi felt somewhat abnormal upon seeing her; his mind was filled with questions.
"Yeah, I heard from Ashan that you came to see an injured friend." Lin Yi deliberately mentioned Ashan's name, clearly wanting to remind Ying Sa of what had just happened.
Ying Sa bit her lip and replied, "Dad was in a hurry yesterday, so I didn’t have time to transfer Witerson II to the hospital for treatment."
At that moment, a stretcher was being pushed by two men from the front and back while a woman checked Witerson II's condition on one side and another assisted her.
Witerson II had already regained consciousness and looked at Lin Yi and Ying Sa standing close together with an odd expression. He wasn't foolish and quickly grasped some of the underlying issues.
"Captain, when are we going back?" Witerson II asked with a pale face. Although the Sea Energy Sphere worked well, his injuries were severe and wouldn't heal easily.
Lin Yi turned to glance at Ying Sa, unsure of what she was thinking. "We'll go back once your injuries are healed!"
Currently, the main force of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps was still in the Greater Paris Defense Zone; their Base Camp was located there as well. Naturally, going back meant returning to Base Camp. But what could they do once they got there? Wouldn't it just be another round of hunting Zombies or being hunted down and eaten by them?
An ambulance was parked outside, and after everyone helped Witerson II onto the vehicle, Lin Yi decided to follow it. However, he made sure to greet a few people who had just woken up. As the leader of the team, he naturally had to consider many things.
The castle was somewhat distant from the city center, and the car twisted and turned along the highway for over forty minutes before reaching the hospital. Strangely, Ying Sa had hardly spoken during the ride, and Lin Yi didn't bother trying to make conversation.
The hospital had already been contacted, and at this time, there weren't many critically ill patients. Those infected with the Zombie Virus who hadn't received the Serum in time could only be abandoned, and now that everyone was mostly staying indoors, major traffic accidents were nearly nonexistent. As Lin Yi and the others made their way there, the outside felt eerily quiet, far less lively than Greater Paris. The city gave off a sense of desolation; even though it was the height of summer, there was no hint of heat.
The doctors at the hospital were apathetic as they helped push the stretcher inside, eventually leading it to a separate building. This was the best recovery room that Ying Sa had arranged for them, with twenty-four-hour service. However, Lin Yi looked at these weary doctors and shook his head inwardly. Perhaps they could provide efficient service under normal circumstances, but now, with danger looming over them, they were constantly at risk of being devoured and had little thought for anything else.
Fortunately, a few attending physicians seemed relatively normal as they used various instruments to conduct a thorough examination of Witerson II. When they saw the deep wound on Witerson II's abdomen, their faces were filled with astonishment. They must have never encountered someone so severely injured who could still make it to the hospital while remaining conscious.
Lin Yi didn't explain much; after all, not everyone could be trusted with such matters. Ying Sa, however, informed the doctors that Witerson II had taken a mysterious Eastern healing pill to achieve this state.
As Milan's best hospital with top-notch internal and external medicine specialists, they provided a treatment plan in less than half an hour. After that, Lin Yi and his team didn't need to worry anymore; they were confident that within seven days, they could help Witerson II recover significantly from his wounds and be back to his lively self in a month.
After receiving some medication, Witerson II fell asleep since rest would expedite his recovery. Although there were experienced nurses to take care of everything for him, Lin Yi decided to stay and keep watch. He knew that during the months he had been unconscious, everyone had taken turns caring for him.
Ying Sa stayed for a while but held back her words at the last moment. Lin Yi found it strange that he didn't smile at her like he usually did.
Around noon, after helping Lin Yi buy some food, Ying Sa suddenly puffed her cheeks and turned to leave. As her graceful figure disappeared down the hallway, Lin Yi felt a growing sense of loss within him.
Though he was alone and bored, he took advantage of this rare moment of tranquility to ponder some questions. He and Ying Sa had known each other for a short time; even he wasn't sure when they had started relying on one another. Yet suddenly, he found himself becoming Ashan's brother-in-law and Bruh's son-in-law. Lin Yi had never asked Ying Sa what she thought about this because he feared facing those questions. Deep down, he knew he liked Ying Sa; however, this affection made him feel ashamed. He still had Li Qiweng—she was his fiancée—but it seemed that often he hardly thought of her at all.
...
Before he realized it, night had fallen. The lights in the ward were dimmed almost to the point where it was difficult to see anything clearly; outside the room were only faint footsteps and occasionally what sounded like distant insect chirps.
Lin Yi's eyelids grew heavier; despite his unique constitution, not resting for several hours would naturally make him sleepy.
In a daze, Lin Yi felt a chill sweep through him. The next moment, his eye twitched as a delicate figure swiftly slipped past him!
As if awakening from a deep slumber, Lin Yi's mental energy surged forth like a tidal wave. In an instant, a figure less than five feet tall appeared in his mind, but it quickly vanished!
With a thought, Lin Yi transformed into a blur and disappeared from the hospital room. He had just locked onto the location where the figure had disappeared, and he shot toward that direction.
Moments later, Lin Yi found himself nearly a hundred meters away from the Second Ward. However, strangely, he noticed that the sensor lights here had turned off as he arrived. Just moments ago, there had clearly been someone passing through, and Lin Yi had rushed over almost instantly; the sensor lights shouldn't have gone out so quickly.
An ominous feeling lingered in Lin Yi's mind as he made every effort to control his body to avoid triggering the sensor lights. Before him stood a half-open door, above which hung a sign flashing red letters, accompanied by a blood-red bag-like symbol. Although Lin Yi couldn't decipher the letters' meaning, he could roughly guess that this was likely a storage room for Blood Bags.
Holding his breath, Lin Yi slowly leaned his head into the gap of the half-open door. Suddenly, a chilling aura rushed toward him, causing him to nearly sneeze.
Inside the storage room, due to the low temperature, mist swirled around, making it hard for Lin Yi to see anything. Just as he was about to release his mental energy to investigate further, he heard a "sucking" sound, reminiscent of a child desperately trying to drink the last drops of juice through a straw.
At that moment, a vague shadow suddenly appeared in the misty room and hurriedly approached the door. The next second, just as Lin Yi prepared to hide, the fog revealed a thin man with a pointed chin. His mouth was adorned with long fangs dripping with blood on either side. In his hand was a Blood Bag, which he seemed to be enjoying.
It was as if two cars about to collide only realized each other's presence at the last moment; Lin Yi and the Pointed Chin Man only became aware of one another when they were very close.
"Ah—A ghost!" Before Lin Yi could react, the other party let out a piercing scream and tossed aside the Blood Bag, looking around as if unsure where to escape.
Lin Yi was startled by this sudden scream and instinctively took a step back. With that retreat, the Pointed Chin Man darted out like an insect finding its way out of confinement.
