The night was cool like the surface of a lake, dotted with twinkling stars that occasionally flickered at the corner of one's eye, bringing an unexpected sense of calm. Just moments ago, Lin Yi had been babbling nonsensically, but now he took a deep breath, and the drunken haze that clouded his eyes vanished without a trace.
Witerson II was momentarily stunned, but when he noticed Jerry beside him stifling laughter, he realized that Lin Yi had been pretending to be drunk all along.
"Quickly gather the team; we need to leave immediately!" The thought of the fleeing Super Zombie sent a shiver of unease through Lin Yi.
The Zombie Army was currently unstoppable; they would not easily give up the city they had fought so hard to conquer!
"Are you worried they'll leave us behind?" Jerry didn't think as deeply as Lin Yi. He had noticed that Raymond had been trying to recruit Lin Yi, and he voiced his own concerns. After all, there were thousands on the other side, while they only had about three hundred. Even with a Super Expert like Lin Yi, it would be impossible to protect the entire team!
"Hmph, they wouldn't dare come at us openly! But those Zombies might very well attempt a sneak attack tonight. If they manage to catch us off guard, we could be in serious Trouble!" Lin Yi wasn't worried about Raymond; he was confident he could hold him hostage. Even if Raymond wanted to make a move, he'd have to get past Lin Yi first!
"Zombies? Weren't they just beaten down like stray dogs?" Witerson II hadn't considered what intentions these Zombies might have.
Suddenly, a jolt of alarm surged through Lin Yi. A feeling of dread washed over him! He furrowed his brow and said in an unusually serious tone, "Don't ask questions! Organize the team and leave immediately!"
Before Witerson II and Jerry could react, Lin Yi grabbed one person with each hand and dashed toward where the Blood Envoy had set up camp!
However, as soon as Lin Yi stepped inside, a strong smell of alcohol hit him like a wave, and what should have been an orderly camp was now chaotic!
He dropped Witerson II and the others and slipped into one of the largest tents. There he saw Yevgeny, his eyes glazed from drink, leering at Jian's alluring figure, one arm making an inappropriate attempt to drape over her shoulder!
"Enough!" A surge of anger welled up in Lin Yi, and he shouted at the top of his lungs. The scene around him was complete chaos; everyone was holding drinks and laughing loudly, their clothes stained with grease. The atmosphere felt like one of revelry.
"Oh? Isn't this Captain Lin?" Yevgeny, unsteady on his feet, staggered toward Lin Yi. He attempted several times to place his hand on him but was skillfully dodged by Lin Yi.
"Mr. Lin, could you please explain what is going on?" Lin Yi raised an eyebrow. If it weren't for the eight thousand mechanical soldiers outside, he might have already slapped him.
"Mr. Lin, why don't you go enjoy some drinks and meat with our Captain? Is it not allowed for your subordinates to share in the fun? A Captain shouldn't be so selfish; this could lead to discontent among the soldiers!" Yevgeny poured himself a large glass of liquor, though half of it spilled onto the ground.
"Exactly, Captain! The Brothers have been running around these days without even a decent nap. Now that this Major is treating us to some relaxation, can't you just let us enjoy it?"
Tony, who had a penchant for alcohol, went a bit too far with his words. Lulu quickly pinched his arm, signaling him to hold back, but Tony was too far gone to care at that moment.
"Look at Lulu; she respects you so much and always asks me about you. We all envy the Captain's imposing presence. But we can't do that; we just don't have that kind of luck," Tony continued rambling. Lin Yi could only remain silent. Although drunken people often spoke without restraint, in a way, they were expressing their true feelings.
Lin Yi had always charged ahead in battle, protecting others, but they also had their own aspirations. With Lin Yi stealing all the attention, it naturally made others feel useless.
The scene remained chaotic; many people didn't even realize Lin Yi had arrived and continued drinking among themselves. However, the unease in Lin Yi's heart grew stronger. He didn't know exactly what was wrong, but he knew it had to do with the Zombies.
" Witerson II, Jerry, gather everyone from the other tents; we need to leave immediately!" Lin Yi observed that this tent had the most people—over half of the Mercenary Squad was here—while those in the other two tents were likely just resting.
Witerson II and Jerry quickly exited; they could tell that Lin Yi was not pleased.
"What's wrong? Is Captain Lin unhappy? Should I have Jian come keep you company?" Yevgeny, who was somewhat unsteady on his feet, suddenly tried to wrap his arms around Jian's waist, attempting to pull her into his embrace!
Lin Yi's suppressed emotions erupted at that moment. Before anyone could react, Yevgeny let out a scream as Lin Yi single-handedly forced his arm behind his back, causing Yevgeny's body to arch like a shrimp in pain.
In the next instant, without any warning, Lin Yi raised his hand and flung Yevgeny out through the doorway.
With a loud "thud," it sounded as if a rag had been thrown to the ground.
"What are you all standing there for? Hurry up and gather to prepare for departure!" Lin Yi shouted, his eyes wide open like copper bells, his roar almost ferocious enough to devour someone whole.
Jian, who had always been the ice queen, was startled by Lin Yi's shout and quickly signaled everyone to leave. She could see the flickers of concern in Lin Yi's predatory gaze. She knew just how terrifying his combat power was; if he was that worried, then there must be a serious problem!
Although the other mercenaries had also drunk quite a bit, they were all elite fighters and wouldn't truly be so intoxicated as to lose their senses. Aside from a few individuals, the rest began to line up and assemble.
At that moment, Witerson II and Jerry hurried over, followed by a group of confused individuals. Clearly, they had no idea why Lin Yi suddenly called everyone to line up and prepare to leave.
"Everyone, our mission as mercenaries is complete. It's best we leave and head back to Moscow! As for the reason, I hope you all trust me; I wouldn't waste your time without good cause!"
The crowd was momentarily stunned but quickly nodded in agreement. Lin Yi had proven countless times through his actions that he was trustworthy!
The team of over three hundred wasn't particularly large or small, but under Jian and Witerson's organization, they were fully equipped and ready to depart in just five minutes!
At this point, Lin Yi couldn't care less about angering Colonel Raymond; for him, the lives of his team members were what truly mattered!
"Let's go!" As soon as Lin Yi finished speaking, he leaped onto the command vehicle with fluid motion.
Just as Lin Yi was beginning to relax, a long alarm suddenly pierced the night sky!
His heart, which had just settled, shot back up into his throat. The concerns he had were coming true!
“Zombies are attacking!” The alarm had just sounded, and the patrolling personnel were shouting. In an instant, the once quiet camp erupted into chaos, filled with curses, shouts, and sporadic cannon fire.
“Charge out!” Lin Yi activated the command vehicle and led the charge toward the city gates. Even though the zombies were fast, they couldn’t outrun their armored vehicle!
The camp was in disarray, and many soldiers, seeing the armored vehicle heading out, jumped directly toward it. They seemed to forget that flesh and blood could be caught by a moving vehicle. Several soldiers collided with the side of the armored car, their bodies gruesomely mangled by the tires.
Lin Yi witnessed all of this but did nothing; he simply accelerated the speed of his command vehicle. He knew that there wouldn’t be many people he could save.
However, Lin Yi quickly realized the ferocity of this Fighting Nation. Those soldiers who had escaped saw that the armored vehicle wasn’t stopping and even charged toward it. They began firing at Lin Yi’s convoy! Many of these soldiers were equipped with individual laser guns, which were not something an ordinary armored vehicle could withstand!
With a cold snort, Lin Yi snatched the laser guns from those soldiers’ hands and then led his convoy in a frantic dash! The soldiers who had suddenly lost their laser guns were stunned; they couldn’t comprehend where their weapons had gone!
Lin Yi was oblivious to their shock, but as he broke through the encirclement, he was astonished. The highway that should have been clear was now packed with zombies. Most of them were giant zombies that had just crossed over a quarantine wall that hadn’t been repaired yet.
“Roar—” The zombies were gnawing on a few patrollers they had just captured while charging toward Lin Yi and his team.
Lin Yi finally understood the reason for his heart palpitations: it was these zombies. They had been preparing to eliminate them within the city all along. From start to finish, they had been scheming, and now it was clear that they had fallen into a trap set by the zombies!
The zombies were cunning; they knew how to create traps. Lin Yi's mind began to spiral into chaos as fear gripped him—he truly began to dread these foul-smelling walking corpses!
