In just a few short minutes, four people were dead and three injured, while the Zombie escaped with a severed arm. Lin Yi wondered if this outcome could be considered acceptable.
The Bearded Man remained unconscious, and the Scarred Woman had only just managed to stand up with some strength. Although her Ability had been incredibly powerful, it had taken a severe toll on her. The Bearded Man had not used his Nine Star Level Bestow Unique Ability at any point, leaving Lin Yi in the dark about its potential.
As for Zidli, his body had turned red, enhancing his strength and ultimately triggering an explosion of energy within him. However, if he knew that even sacrificing himself would not kill that Super Zombie, he would surely be filled with despair.
Lin Yi extended his Psychic Power to observe the surroundings and noticed a high-speed hovering Bulletproof Vehicle racing toward them, marked distinctly with the insignia of the command center.
"Ma'am, the vehicle here to rescue you has arrived," Lin Yi said. The Bulletproof Vehicle was still out of sight, and the Scarred Woman had yet to notice it due to her weakened state.
"Huh? What vehicle?" The Scarred Woman looked at Lin Yi with a puzzled expression, clearly finding it hard to believe.
"The one from the Cairo Command Center. Isn't that your superior?" Lin Yi scratched the back of his head, confusion etched on his face.
The Scarred Woman paused for a moment before replying, "We don't belong to the command center."
Just as Lin Yi was about to confidently inquire further, the Bulletproof Vehicle came into view for the Scarred Woman. Seeing that she was not looking at him, Lin Yi helped support the Bearded Man as they waited for the vehicle to land.
At that moment, the Bearded Man felt icy cold all over. Even though Lin Yi was wearing the War God Suit, he could feel that chill seeping into his body like a poisonous mist. He lamented internally that the Zombie had escaped; who knew when it might come back for revenge? With peak Nine Star Level strength, Lin Yi doubted even his entire Mercenary team could defeat it.
The Bullet Head hover vehicle landed with remarkable stability and made almost no noise upon descent. As soon as it came to a stop, four individuals dressed in white jumped down from above, rushing toward Lin Yi and the others while carrying protective shields.
"Greetings! We have been ordered to take you to the command center for treatment!" One of them, who appeared to be in charge, nodded toward Lin Yi and the others. However, wearing a mask obscured most of their face; all Lin Yi could see were vague eyes devoid of any warmth or eagerness—only a strong sense of vigilance.
"Thank you. None of us are infected; it's just that Zidli unfortunately perished alongside the enemy," the Scarred Woman spoke with a hint of respect toward these medical personnel, her tone lacking the commanding presence one would expect from a Nine-Star Master.
"That's truly unfortunate, but please follow us back to the command center," the leading man in white said, bowing slightly in a gesture of invitation, though his body appeared somewhat stiff.
Lin Yi and the Scarred Woman exchanged glances before nodding and assisting the Bearded Man toward the Bulletproof Vehicle. The four men in white seemed to avoid them like a plague, stepping aside as they passed.
Inside the vehicle, there was even a dedicated isolation chamber. Once Lin Yi and the others entered, they were immediately cut off from the outside world, not even a window left for them! Fortunately, Lin Yi's perception allowed him to sense the situation outside. Several men in white sat silently outside, showing no signs of movement.
After about ten minutes, the Bulletproof Vehicle finally arrived at the Intelligence Center. At that moment, Lin Yi was surprised to find three individuals beyond the Eight Star Level waiting for them below.
The welcoming scene Lin Yi had imagined was nowhere to be seen; instead, he noticed several fully armed soldiers watching him and his companions with vigilant expressions.
However, Lin Yi soon felt waves of energy sweeping past him. He then saw the three experts beyond the Eight Star Level swiftly approach him.
Just as Lin Yi was about to greet them, they merely nodded at the Scarred Woman before taking her and the Bearded Man away. At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that the soldiers visibly relaxed.
But soon after, Lin Yi sensed a shift in atmosphere as many people emerged from the command center, all wearing smiles. Their eyes were fixed on Lin Yi, causing his face to flush red.
"Captain Lin, you've achieved another great feat this time; it's truly commendable!" A plump man in his sixties approached Lin Yi with enthusiasm and shook his hand without hesitation.
At that moment, reporters suddenly appeared from nowhere, snapping photos of Lin Yi and the man in a frenzy, leaving Lin Yi bewildered. Just moments ago, he had felt like he was facing a formidable enemy; now it seemed as if he were among close comrades. What did this all mean?
However, Lin Yi quickly realized that this man's face looked somewhat familiar; he felt as if he had seen him somewhere before but couldn't recall where.
"I've been so busy these past few days that I haven't had a chance to catch up with Captain Lin. I apologize for that!" The Chubby Man's eyes squinted into slits as he smiled broadly.
Lin Yi secretly scorned him in his heart; he had seen such scenes before. After a brief moment of restraint, he quickly revealed a standard smile and replied, "Your responsibilities are significant; naturally, you can't waste time on someone like me."
"No, no, no, Captain Lin still doesn't know how famous he is around the world! Having you here is our utmost honor!" The man didn't mind showering Lin Yi with compliments; after all, flattery didn't come with a tax.
Lin Yi had heard such praise before, but he understood that trouble was about to come. No one treated a complete stranger with such enthusiasm without a reason.
"So, what can I do for you?" Lin Yi thought back to how he had just been escorted by those men in white, and he felt a bit displeased.
The man patted Lin Yi on the shoulder and leaned in close, his round face nearly touching Lin Yi's. If it weren't for Lin Yi's composure, he might have lost his temper right then.
"There are too many reporters here; it's not convenient to talk. Let's go inside," the Chubby Man whispered in Lin Yi's ear.
Lin Yi nodded and smiled, "You're too kind. Let's discuss this in detail inside!"
The two exchanged a few more meaningless pleasantries before heading toward the command center's main hall. Just then, a swarm of reporters suddenly rushed over, bombarding them with questions.
Lin Yi recognized many of those reporters; they were familiar faces, though he didn't know their names. However, the Blonde Woman who kept smiling at him was the one he remembered most vividly; she seemed to appear beside him at any moment.
"Captain Lin, what kind of miracle do you plan to create this time in the Nile Defense Zone? Will you continue to maintain your status as the king in everyone's hearts?" The Blonde Woman raised her microphone and asked as soon as she noticed Lin Yi looking at her.
Lin Yi forced himself to appear friendly. "I'm just an ordinary person trying to do what I can in this disaster."
"Could you elaborate? I've heard that the Cairo Command Center has a new major operation planned. Will you be participating?" The Blonde Reporter pressed on relentlessly, while several male reporters nearby were distracted by the sight of her ample figure, nearly forgetting their original purpose.
Lin Yi squinted slightly and glanced at the man beside him. He knew the key issue lay here; this guy was being overly enthusiastic!
"That still needs careful consideration; after all, our capabilities are limited," Lin Yi replied and gestured for the man to hurry inside with him. He needed to figure out what was really going on first.
A group of tall, imposing security guards in black quickly emerged from the shadows, directly separating the reporters from Lin Yi. However, Lin Yi still glanced at the group of reporters, who seemed determined to rush forward. Fortunately, the man assured them that there would be a press conference in two minutes, which finally calmed them down.
Lin Yi followed the man through layers of rooms and eventually stopped at the entrance of a spacious office adorned with Arab-style decor.
"Please, come in!" The man smiled and stepped aside, making a respectful gesture.
Although Lin Yi wasn't very accustomed to such formalities, his eagerness to understand what was happening outweighed his reservations, and he walked in without hesitation.
A few steps later, the man followed closely behind and cautiously locked the door.
"First of all, I must apologize to Mr. Lin Yi. Our earlier actions were not intentional; please do not take it to heart." The Chubby Man suddenly bowed to Lin Yi, his expression serious.
Lin Yi was taken aback by the sudden apology and felt a bit embarrassed. A quick glance around revealed numerous photographs of past national leaders, and he recognized that the Chubby Man before him was one of those prominent figures. At this moment, even Lin Yi could understand that this man was indeed the leader of Cairo, the head of the command center.
"Commander, may I ask what caused you to be so cautious?" Lin Yi steadied his emotions and inquired.
"I believe Mr. Lin is aware that the spread of zombies is closely related to human traitors. In Cairo's past, there were indeed traitors among us who falsely reported their success in repelling zombies. We celebrated their claims, only to find out they had colluded with the zombies all along. During a time when many high-ranking officials were present, they brazenly launched an attack and spread the Zombie Virus!
If it weren't for a few hidden experts at the Nine Star Level, the entire Nile Defense Zone might have ceased to exist! These traitors are truly despicable, which is why we later mandated that any High-Level Combat Power personnel entering the command center must undergo strict checks."
