Li Haifeng felt a wave of frustration wash over him. As an outstanding officer of the Federation, he had made a mistake today by arriving at the wrong location, causing him to be three minutes late according to standard response time.
There was a saying in the police academy: every second you waste could mean the difference between life and death for someone. Being late by three minutes might only cost him a bit of his bonus this year, but if something went wrong, it could jeopardize not only his chances of being recognized as an outstanding officer but also his recently promoted position.
At that moment, he noticed two young men standing not far from the smoking building, completely unaware of the danger they were in. Anger surged within him. Although it seemed the fire was out, there could still be explosives present, and being so close to the incident site was undoubtedly dangerous. If anything happened to those two, he would be held accountable.
"You two! Are you trying to get into the police station? What are you doing here?" Li Haifeng placed his hand on his holster. As an officer, he knew he could never let his guard down. Even though it was just a fire, he couldn't afford to be careless.
Just then, one of the young men turned around and stared at Li Haifeng as if he had something to say.
Li Haifeng sensed something was off. Based on his years of experience, if this Emaciated Youth was indeed the arsonist, he would have already fled. If not, there was no reason for him to look at Li Haifeng like that.
"Officer..." the Emaciated Youth called out to Li Haifeng, but suddenly his expression changed dramatically, as if he were hiding something important.
Li Haifeng signaled for his colleagues to follow and stepped forward first, drawing his Phase Gun. This type of Phase Gun allowed for adjustable energy levels; even at its lowest setting, it could only cause superficial burns.
A sharp slap echoed through the area without warning, like a balloon bursting in a quiet classroom—sudden and loud.
Li Haifeng felt a stinging pain on his face and struggled to comprehend what had just happened. As a trained police officer, he was skilled in handling situations like this. However, the shadow that had struck him had appeared too suddenly for him to react in time. It didn't take long for him to realize what had occurred: he had been slapped in front of his subordinates and a gathering crowd.
His face flushed red, and soon his neck followed suit. Whether it was from pain or anger, one thing was certain—he wanted nothing more than to shoot the person who had just slapped him.
"Assaulting an officer!"
Li Haifeng's subordinate was the first to react. In that instant, two burly police officers rushed forward and quickly pinned the Emaciated Youth to the ground.
The Emaciated Youth appeared as helpless as a lamb to the slaughter in front of the two strong men, seemingly without any power to resist. Suddenly, at that moment, flames erupted from the Emaciated Youth's hands. The flames were not very large at first, but they quickly spread to the two officers.
"Ability User!" Li Haifeng's heart sank. He had seen all kinds of Ability Users before; there was even a specialized department in the police station composed of powerful Ability Users who assisted in dealing with these terrifying foes.
"Officer 558 to headquarters, we have discovered an Ability User at 789 Galaxy Avenue in the Central District. Requesting backup!" Li Haifeng swiftly sent out the message. He knew how destructive an Ability User could be, and headquarters would certainly take such cases very seriously.
"Officer 558, please describe the characteristics of the Ability User!" The response from headquarters came almost immediately after Li Haifeng had just requested backup.
"Using fire, other abilities unknown!" This was Li Haifeng's first time facing an Ability User alone, and he felt somewhat flustered about the reporting process.
After a few seconds of silence on the other end, they replied, "Backup will arrive within three minutes. Please ensure the safety of the crowd... and watch your own safety!"
Ye Yu furrowed his brow upon hearing Li Haifeng's words. Having controlled the Emaciated Youth, he intended to use him to create chaos and then escape. However, now that backup was being called in, he found himself under scrutiny as well.
"Generous, Er Lei, evacuate the crowd!" Li Haifeng reacted quickly. While instructing his two subordinates, he immediately raised his Phase Gun and aimed it at the Emaciated Youth.
"You stay right there!" Ye Yu saw this situation and prepared to retreat quietly, but Li Haifeng shouted at him.
Ye Yu lowered his head and pointed at the Emaciated Youth, saying, "That fire was his doing; it has nothing to do with me..."
"Whether it has anything to do with you or not is not for you to decide. I saw you two acting suspiciously together!" Li Haifeng felt a twinge of fear inside. He knew that these Ability Users were different from ordinary people; if provoked, who knew if they would retaliate fiercely?
Ye Yu felt a surge of anxiety within. If things continued like this, by the time their reinforcements arrived, he would surely be unable to escape. The crowd of onlookers was too large, and the police were equipped with recording devices. It was impossible for him to resolve this matter without leaving a trace. Even if he used his Psychic Power to control the situation, once the police investigated, they would undoubtedly discover that he had used Psychic Power to confuse others.
"I'm sorry about this!" Ye Yu glanced at the Emaciated Youth, who was still dazed on the ground, silently apologizing in his heart. At that moment, the Emaciated Youth suddenly sprang up from the ground and pounced on Li Haifeng, knocking him down.
Li Haifeng had never slackened in his daily training, but he hesitated because his opponent was an Ability User and was caught off guard, ending up on the ground. Just then, Li Haifeng saw flames erupting once again in the Emaciated Youth's hand.
"I didn't expect it to escalate so quickly..." Li Haifeng looked at the ever-expanding flames with a weary expression. As a police officer, he was mentally prepared for such situations, but when the moment arrived, no one could accept it willingly.
"Madman, stop!"
While Ye Yu was contemplating how much threat he needed to pose in order to slip away amidst the chaos, he suddenly heard a thunderous voice ringing in his ears, shaking him so much that his ears buzzed.
At that moment, Ye Yu's Mental Power swirled around his ears, alleviating some of the discomfort.
And just then, Ye Yu's face was filled with shock as he saw a man rapidly descending from above, causing the ground to tremble beneath him!
