Yama's Wedding
Jun Ruo continued to stare intently at the group, and everyone felt a sense of surprise.
"We really don't know anything."
"Yeah, just let us go, spare our lives, please!"
The people knelt on the ground, begging for mercy.
"Still no, if not, hmm!" Jun Ruo remained unwavering, relentlessly questioning them.
Yao Guang and Xue were puzzled about what Jun Ruo intended to do, while Yao Guang was frightened by the bloodthirsty display Jun Ruo had just shown.
"We truly don't know where the master is. He just told us to go ahead. Please let us go; we really don't know anything!" The group pleaded desperately.
"Head of the Family, what's wrong with you?" Old Five couldn't hold back and stepped forward to address Jun Ruo.
"I'll explain everything when we get back. For now, let's take these people back," Jun Ruo decided it was best to return since she wasn't getting any answers.
"Alright." With Jun Ruo's decision made, everyone began to bind the remaining captives and took them back.
"Let's go." Xue's face was serious as he spoke to Yao Guang.
The atmosphere on the way back was far from the lightheartedness of Tathagata's time. Even Old Five, who usually loved to stir things up, fell silent. Yao Guang and Xue walked quietly behind the crowd, and even the captives were ordered by Jun Ruo to keep quiet, only able to make muffled sounds.
Jun Ruo walked alone at the front of the line, and no one dared to approach her to ask what was wrong.
"Xue, what's going on with her?" Yao Guang whispered quietly to Xue.
"I don't know." Xue looked ahead at Jun Ruo, unsure of the reason behind his own uncertainty.
"Should we help these people?" Yao Guang pointed at the poor souls bound and helpless.
Xue gazed at those tied to the cart, their faces filled with terror. "Let's see what Jun Ruo intends to do."
"Yeah."
What was this woman up to? Xue wasn't quite sure; everything had happened so quickly that he had witnessed a man die right before his eyes. However, unlike Yao Guang, even if everyone here were to be killed by Jun Ruo, he wouldn't lift a finger to help. Since coming to the mortal realm, aside from the somewhat selfish assistance he had given Liu Qing last time, he wouldn't interfere excessively in matters of life and death. As the saying goes, life and death are determined by fate.
"Bring those boxes over here and open them," Jun Ruo commanded upon returning to the Bandit Hideout, ignoring the captives entirely as she ordered her men to haul the boxes up.
"Head of the Family, these boxes must contain quite a few treasures; they are incredibly heavy."
Indeed, Yao Guang observed that it took four men just to lift one box, indicating it was filled with valuable items.
Yet, upon hearing their comments, Jun Ruo showed no sign of happiness on her face.
Once all four boxes were brought up, Jun Ruo finally ordered them to be opened.
Yao Guang leaned in closer, eager to see what was inside.
"What is this? Are you trying to fool us?"
As everyone anticipated the contents of the boxes, they were shocked to find them filled with stones.
The excitement that had filled their hearts plummeted instantly. Old Five furiously pulled a stone from the box and slammed it onto the ground. "What the hell is this?"
"Open another one." Jun Ruo's face darkened as he looked at the stones inside the box.
Anyone would be upset after working hard only to find a box full of stones upon opening it.
Soon, the remaining two boxes were opened, and they too were filled with heavy stones.
"What are you transporting these stones for?" Old Five growled as he grabbed one of the men inside, pulling the cloth from his mouth to ask.
"Sir, we don't know either. We were just following orders. We haven't opened any of these boxes," the man replied, surprised to see the stones inside. He hadn't expected that the master would go to such lengths to have them escorted for just a few boxes of stones.
"Bah! I thought there was something valuable inside," Old Five kicked the nearby box in frustration and continued to kick it several times out of anger. The box was nearly falling apart from Old Five's forceful kicks.
"Enough, stop messing around." Jun Ruo frowned, stopping Old Five's actions. Fortunately, the purpose of this operation wasn't about gold and silver treasures but something else entirely. Jun Ruo turned his gaze towards the trembling individuals, observing each one carefully. A quick glance confirmed that there were indeed some who understood what was happening. Jun Ruo focused on an inconspicuous servant; while everyone else was terrified, this person's expression, though fearful, was clearly feigned. While others trembled, this individual’s eyes remained relaxed.
Jun Ruo sensed another gaze upon him and looked over to find it belonged to Xue.
Meeting his gaze, Xue did not look away but instead glanced at the group of captives and exchanged a knowing look with Jun Ruo.
Understanding dawned on Jun Ruo as he nodded in acknowledgment; it seemed Xue had also noticed something. Jun Ruo couldn't help but admire this man even more. He had identified a flaw because he knew that this operation wasn't about robbing the merchant convoy but about uncovering the master behind it. Meanwhile, Xue, who appeared unaware of everything, had an instinct that impressed Jun Ruo greatly.
Yao Guang watched Xue and Jun Ruo silently communicating and tugged at Xue's sleeve, asking, "What are you two doing?"
"You'll find out soon enough," Xue replied without elaborating further. He didn't want Yao Guang to know too much about what was going on just yet.
"I wouldn't know if you didn't tell me! You're just watching those people over there; one of them is definitely not just an ordinary servant," Yao Guang scoffed when she saw that Xue was not engaging with her.
"You figured it out, how?" Xue looked at Yao Guang in surprise.
"It's simple, really. Look at that servant over there. Dressed so plainly, yet wearing such soft-soled shoes. Although the style is simple and looks like everyone else's, the soles are clearly made for walking. This person must not be used to long distances. Generally, who would pay such attention to their shoe soles if they were just an ordinary servant?" After finishing, Yao Guang disdainfully shook his head.
After hearing Yao Guang's words, Xue took a closer look at the servant's shoes and indeed noticed the differences. Yao Guang had impressed him.
He hadn't expected that while he and Jun Ruo had been observing for a while, Yao Guang had seen through it much more clearly. This only confirmed Xue's suspicion that something was off about the man.
Yao Guang had truly surprised him. Xue looked at Yao Guang with delight.
"Hey, it seems like there's a sound coming from inside this box." The last box seemed to emit a noise from within.
Old Five happened to be standing next to that box and jumped several steps away in fright.
"What happened?" Jun Ruo asked.
"The box... it's moving." People nearby quickly distanced themselves from the box.
Jun Ruo was about to speak when he caught a glimpse of the man's eyes revealing panic.
"Open it." Jun Ruo thought for a moment and ordered everyone to open the box. (To be continued.)
