Yama's Wedding
"I am the steward of our master." The man seemed to be in great pain, and after a long pause, he continued. Of course, no one in the hall felt any sympathy for him; everyone knew that Jun Ruo had her own reasons for acting this way.
"Oh, and then?" Jun Ruo played with the knife in her hand as she asked.
"The master sent us ahead to scout the situation on the road. Then we would report back to him. If there was no danger, he would come disguised in a little while," the man explained honestly.
"I already know all that. What I need is something useful. What about that woman? What's going on?" After listening for a while without hearing what she wanted to know, Jun Ruo's patience was clearly wearing thin.
"That, that woman..." The steward appeared to be troubled, and after stammering for a while, he still couldn't produce any useful information, his expression particularly conflicted.
"You know my patience is limited," Jun Ruo said, looking at the steward.
"My lord, I truly don't know! Please show mercy and let me go," the steward pleaded repeatedly.
"Is it that you don't know or that you don't want to tell me?" Jun Ruo swiftly thrust her dagger into the ground beside the steward. "If you don't speak up now, next time it won't be like this. Think carefully."
Everyone watched this scene unfold. Yao Guang felt uneasy; since they arrived here, he had seen Jun Ruo being relatively gentle. Today, however, he couldn't understand what had happened. Jun Ruo had already lost her temper several times today; he wondered what exactly she was trying to interrogate.
"I-I-I..." Perhaps frightened by Jun Ruo's methods, the man trembled as he spoke. "That woman is my master's new concubine."
Upon hearing this, the steward lowered his head in shame.
"Do you think I'm a fool? Your master is a eunuch," Jun Ruo said with a smile as she listened to his nonsense.
"Ah, so he's actually a eunuch."
"Then how could he marry a wife?"
Voices of discussion began to rise around them.
The butler, upon hearing Jun Ruo's words, realized he could no longer hide the truth. He clenched his fists tightly, as if making a difficult decision.
"Since you already know, I won't keep it a secret any longer. This woman is a material for my master’s alchemy."
"Material for alchemy?!" Yao Guang couldn't help but rush out to ask.
"Yes, my master took in a Sorcerer some time ago. To repay my master, the Sorcerer suggested finding a woman born on an inauspicious day and hour to use as an ingredient for alchemy, which could restore him to manhood." At this point, the butler hesitated to continue.
The crowd gasped; it was the first time they had heard of such a thing.
"So this woman is the one you found," Xue interjected.
"Yes."
"Alright, take her away. Just don’t kill her," Jun Ruo said after learning what he wanted to know, instructing them to escort the butler out.
"Boss, what exactly is going on?" Finally, someone asked the question Yao Guang had been eager to know from the start: what was Jun Ruo up to?
Jun Ruo glanced at everyone and spoke, "A few days ago, I received a letter stating that a wealthy merchant from Jiangnan would be passing through our Black Wind Stronghold soon. However, this merchant is ruthless and has significant power in Jiangnan; he essentially runs rampant, committing arson and robbery without remorse. Moreover, he seems to have connections in the capital. Since this is a covert operation, they won’t bring too many people with them, so the letter's sender hoped I could teach this merchant a lesson—ideally ensuring he doesn’t return from this trip!"
"Connections in the capital? Boss, isn’t this too risky?" someone voiced their concern after hearing Jun Ruo's words.
"Yes, yes! Isn’t this too much…?" another echoed.
"I also thought it was too risky at first. So I sent someone to investigate further, and the response was chilling. This merchant is not just ruthless; he is utterly depraved—worse than a beast." As Jun Ruo recalled what he had learned about this merchant, he felt an overwhelming urge to kill him right then and there.
"This man is named Hu Qing. He was once a poor Scholar until a wealthy family’s daughter fell for him and insisted on marrying him despite his poverty. A year into their marriage, he seduced the daughter of the Jiangnan governor and caused his legitimate wife’s death while brutally killing their newborn child. With his wife’s body barely cold, he seized her family’s wealth and murdered his father-in-law before marrying the governor's daughter. Gradually, he used the governor’s influence to become Jiangnan's richest merchant. Anyone who defies him ends up ruined—families destroyed and lives shattered."
Hearing Jun Ruo's words ignited excitement among those who had initially been hesitant to support him.
"Head of the Family, how do you plan to deal with such a person? We can act immediately!"
"Head of the Family, I'm going to kill him right now."
"He's nothing but a beast." Yao Guang felt ashamed for such a savage person. During her time in the mortal realm, she had seen many wealthy individuals who lacked compassion, but none had been as despicable as Hu Qing.
"Everyone, quiet down. We initially wanted to capture this Hu Qing, but we discovered that he intends to use a woman's life to refine pills."
At this point, Yao Guang suddenly recalled something. "Aren't you a eunuch? How did you end up marrying and having children?"
Jun Ruo responded, "After becoming the richest merchant in Jiangnan, this man grew even more ambitious. He extended his reach to the capital and, in pursuit of wealth and power, he even acknowledged Cao Gonggong, who is close to the Empress Dowager, as his adoptive father. To prove his loyalty, he even turned himself into a eunuch."
Upon hearing this, Yao Guang could only feel that this Hu Qing was not only cruel to others but also ruthless towards himself. To gain riches and honor, he had made himself a eunuch.
"According to what the steward just said, Hu Qing will pass by here in a few days. Everyone prepare; we cannot let him escape," Jun Ruo declared loudly.
"Alright!" Upon hearing this, everyone felt invigorated.
"Xue, you..." Yao Guang had some questions she wanted to ask Xue on the way back.
"Hush, let's talk about it when we get back." Xue glanced around and stopped Yao Guang from continuing her thoughts. (To be continued.)
