“Xue.” The Phoenix Empress removed Xue's hand that was shielding her eyes. She didn't like the way she looked, and she didn't want Xue to see too much of it.
“Phoenix Empress, why did you give your inner core to Yao Guang?” Xue asked, puzzled.
“Is it really that important?” the Phoenix Empress countered.
Xue looked at the Phoenix Empress before him. Over the years, she had become like a walking corpse, devoid of soul and feeling.
“Phoenix Empress, even if Candle Dragon is gone, you still have us,” Xue said after a moment of contemplation.
Upon hearing Xue's words, the Phoenix Empress replied bluntly, “Xue, have you forgotten? It was you all who left me back then. Never mind, I have things to attend to. You can check on Yao Guang later.” With that, the Phoenix Empress hurriedly walked away from Xue.
Watching her somewhat disheveled figure retreat, Xue silently pondered. After all these years, the Phoenix Empress still couldn't let go.
The Phoenix Empress fled from Xue's gaze; she feared hearing that name—the name that had seeped into her very bones and become part of her being. Even when mentioned by Xue, her heart couldn't help but dwell on what he had just said. It seemed she still hadn't fully moved on.
Xue stood in place for a while before finally stepping inside the room.
Upon entering, he saw that Yao Guang was already awake. “Yao Guang, you're awake!”
Xue approached with excitement as he noticed Yao Guang sitting up.
“Yao Guang, lie back down! How do you feel?” Xue asked with concern.
“What happened to me?” Yao Guang replied, feeling pain all over as if he had been run over by a cart.
“It's nothing serious, Yao Guang.” Xue recounted the events that had transpired.
“So that's how it was,” Yao Guang said, coming to understand the truth. “But why would the Phoenix Empress give me her inner core? Isn't it something extremely important?” Yao Guang asked in confusion. If possible, he truly wanted to return the Phoenix Empress's inner core to her; such an important thing was not something he could keep. Unfortunately, once an inner core leaves its body, it cannot be returned.
Xue felt regret about the situation, and he couldn't understand what the Phoenix Empress was thinking.
"Yao Guang, how do you feel now?" Xue asked.
"I don't feel anything," Yao Guang replied.
Since Yao Guang seemed to be fine, Xue decided to take him away immediately. After all, Shu and the others were waiting for them to return.
"Then let's go back," Xue said to Yao Guang.
"Okay." Xue supported Yao Guang and was about to leave.
"Yao Guang, Xue, you can't leave yet," the Phoenix Empress said, having arrived outside the room without them noticing.
"Why not?" Yao Guang asked, feeling that there was nothing unusual in his body anymore.
Xue also stopped what he was doing and looked at the Phoenix Empress.
The Phoenix Empress approached them and said, "It's not that I won't let you go; it's just that my inner core is still within Yao Guang's body and hasn't been fully absorbed yet. If you leave like this, Yao Guang will have another episode." She expressed her concern, realizing that her inner core had not completely fused with Yao Guang.
"What should we do then?" Xue asked.
"You can only stay here for a while. I will teach Yao Guang the heart method of our Phoenix Clan so that he can learn how to control my inner core," the Phoenix Empress said to Xue and Yao Guang.
"Phoenix Empress, you..." Xue exclaimed in shock after hearing her words.
"What is it?" Yao Guang looked at Xue, who was staring at the Phoenix Empress in disbelief since she finished speaking.
"The Phoenix Clan respects the Phoenix Empress above all else. The inner core heart method of the Phoenix Clan has never been passed down to outsiders; it is only taught to our own people."
Yao Guang heard Xue's explanation and immediately spoke up, "No, this won't do." Having already accepted such a precious inner core from the Phoenix Empress, how could she let the Phoenix Empress be troubled?
"You don't need to worry. I am the king here, and the laws of our clan are decided by me; it’s no problem at all." For some reason, the moment the Phoenix Empress saw Yao Guang, she felt an inexplicable fondness for the girl. So much so that when she noticed Yao Guang's soul was on the verge of collapse, she unhesitatingly gave her own inner core to Yao Guang. Little did she expect that her well-intentioned act would now cause Yao Guang such pain and unease.
"But..." Yao Guang hesitated. She had already brought too much trouble to the Phoenix Empress. When she had fled from the Underworld, if it hadn't been for the Phoenix Empress, she might not have been alive in this world anymore. Now, having to trouble the Phoenix Empress again made Yao Guang feel quite uneasy, and she didn't know how to repay the Phoenix Empress for her kindness.
"Yao Guang, you don't need to feel guilty. Even if it weren't you today, it would be someone else," the Phoenix Empress said with a smile, waving her hand dismissively.
"Then it's settled. You and Xue can stay here comfortably. Rest well today; tomorrow I will teach you how to control this inner core." Without waiting for Xue or Yao Guang's response, the Phoenix Empress walked out of the room.
For some reason, as Yao Guang watched the Phoenix Empress's departing figure, she felt a surge of emotion and nearly cried. The Phoenix Empress's silhouette seemed somewhat desolate, evoking a sense of loneliness in Yao Guang. Every time she saw the Phoenix Empress, she was always smiling, yet that smile never reached her eyes. As the most revered beast king, why was the Phoenix Empress so unhappy?
Yao Guang vaguely remembered that there had once been a name exchanged between Xue and the Phoenix Empress—something like Candle Dragon. She searched her mind for that name: Candle Dragon... Candle Dragon... It sounded so familiar.
Suddenly, a light bulb went off in Yao Guang's head. She recalled that Candle Dragon was once the mightiest dragon in the dragon clan. It was said that when Candle Dragon opened its eyes, it brought forth daylight; when it closed them, night fell. Its breath brought winter while its exhale summoned summer; it could command winds and rain without needing food or rest. Yet this dragon sacrificed itself during a great war among the five realms, causing the earth to change color and chaos to ensue. The land created by Pangu began to tilt towards chaos once more. Candle Dragon stood up as a pillar to support this tilt and prevent a catastrophe, thus saving countless lives. However, in doing so, Candle Dragon vanished from this world—not truly gone but rather existing within everything on this earth.
Yao Guang remembered that during Candle Dragon's sacrifice, a phoenix had undergone rebirth through fire. While rebirth through fire was common for phoenixes, this one was different; amidst all the chaos, it underwent an astonishing eighty-one trials of fire that illuminated the entire land.
Yao Guang recalled that this phoenix later became the queen of the Phoenix Clan. (To be continued.)
