Yama's Wedding
It had been a long time since Yao Guang had parted ways with Xue. Sitting alone in the Imperial Garden, he gazed at the exotic flowers and fruits around him. Though this place boasted divine blooms unseen by mortals, at that moment, they paled in comparison to the flowers of the mortal realm. He couldn't help but wonder how Xue was faring in the lower world.
Since their separation, Yao Guang appeared to have let go, but who could truly understand the torment he felt inside?
"Sigh." Yao Guang let out a heavy sigh once more. He had lost count of how many times he had sighed since that day.
"Yao Guang, what's wrong?" A cheerful voice came from behind him. Turning around, he saw Kaiyang approaching.
Yao Guang and Kaiyang were of similar age and temperament. Their friendship was strong, and they were closer than Yao Guang was with the other Star Lords.
Seeing Kaiyang approach, Yao Guang sighed again.
Noticing the bitter expression on Yao Guang's face, Kaiyang understood what was troubling him.
Kaiyang sat down beside Yao Guang, leaning against him.
"Yao Guang, it's okay. Once this period passes, you'll be able to see that person you care about again!" Kaiyang said with a bright smile, trying to comfort him.
Yao Guang shook his head and replied, "I don't know when the Dragon Clan will attack the court. I can hardly wait; this war is dragging on, and I don't dare go down to find Xue."
Because he had to guard the court and follow Shu Xing's orders, Yao Guang had been staying put for days, even hesitating to sneak down to the mortal realm.
However, during these days of guarding, the Dragon Clan had suddenly vanished without a trace. Previously, there had been signs of troop training and weaponry preparation, but now no matter how much they searched, it seemed as if they had all disappeared overnight. Yao Guang was left puzzled about the Dragon Clan's intentions.
"True, I'm almost going crazy with boredom! These days have been so dull. Shu has me stuck at the South Gate watching over the lower realm, but no matter how I look around, I haven't seen a single Dragon Clan member!" Kaiyang echoed his frustration. It was indeed strange; just days ago, he had sensed the Dragon Clan gearing up for an assault on the court. Yet now they seemed to have vanished completely without a trace. Logically speaking, even if they were hiding their presence, it was hard to believe that so many Aquatic Race members could gather without him sensing anything as Mars Star Lord.
But strangely enough, no matter how hard he tried to probe, Kaiyang couldn't detect any sign of the Dragon Clan. If it weren't for the fact that there had been no movements from the court thus far, he might have suspected that the Jade Emperor had secretly eliminated them all.
"This is so boring!" The two exchanged glances and lamented together in unison while sitting in the Imperial Garden.
Such leisurely days were truly unsuitable for both Yao Guang and Kaiyang.
In the midst of silence, a sudden, thunderous roar erupted from the courtyard! In an instant, the ground beneath Yao Guang and Kaiyang shook violently, causing the entire courtyard to tremble. A massive wave of energy surged upward from below, striking with fierce intensity. Yao Guang and Kaiyang understood that this was no ordinary disturbance; the courtyard was suspended in place by the combined powers of numerous deities. Now, as it quaked violently, it was clear that something unknown had occurred.
Startled, Yao Guang and Kaiyang immediately stood up to observe the situation below. What they saw left them both astonished.
In the sky above, several dragon tails swayed back and forth, sweeping through the air and creating ripples in the atmosphere. The powerful movements of the dragon tails pulled surrounding air into the Nine Heavens courtyard. The waves they had just felt were a direct result of this force. Below these dragons stood countless members of the Aquatic Race, with the Four Seas Dragon Kings at the forefront. The roars of the dragons echoed in Yao Guang and Kaiyang's ears.
Even ancient gods like Yao Guang and Kaiyang couldn't help but exclaim, "This is bad; the dragons are attacking."
Wenqu rushed over from a distance, looking disheveled and distressed. As one of the seven Star Lords, Wenqu's magical abilities were among the weakest, and he had struggled to withstand the recent surge of energy.
"Yao Guang, Kaiyang, it's bad! The dragons are invading! The Jade Emperor commands us to head to the South Gate immediately to confront them!" Wenqu hurriedly informed them.
Yao Guang and Kaiyang exchanged heavy glances before standing up. It seemed that what they had feared had finally come to pass—the dragons were indeed invading!
Upon hearing Wenqu's words, Yao Guang felt a surge of alarm within her. She had thought that even if the dragons attacked, they could hold their ground. However, based on what she had just witnessed, their defenses barely matched half of what the dragons could unleash. This courtyard was sustained by the collective divine power of all deities; yet just a few dragon tails had been enough to shake it so violently. And beneath this display, there were surely many more dragons yet to reveal themselves. Yao Guang's heart raced as she realized she had underestimated the combat strength of the dragons. She had believed that with the might of the Big Dipper Seventh Star and powerful divine weapons at their disposal, they could easily capture the dragons. But now it seemed uncertain who would emerge victorious in this conflict. Panic gripped her as she wondered about Xue's current situation. Thankfully, Xue had left the courtyard earlier due to Shun's warning; hopefully, he would remain unharmed. Given how things were unfolding now, if Xue had stayed behind, there would surely have been a fierce battle.
"Yao Guang, Wenqu, we need to move quickly!" Kaiyang urged them gravely. After feeling that last wave of energy, he sensed a pervasive aura of battle filling the courtyard—perhaps they hadn’t fully grasped its intensity yet.
As Mars Star Lord, Kaiyang felt his blood boiling with excitement; it had been a long time since he experienced such a rush for battle. His body was telling him that he was finally facing worthy opponents—only to discover that those opponents were none other than the dragons. Kaiyang thrived in combat; however, this overwhelming sense of battle fervor ignited his spirit even further.
Before Yao Guang could ponder more on this matter, another powerful wave surged toward the courtyard from below.
"Move!" To protect Wenqu from harm, Kaiyang and Yao Guang quickly supported him on either side as they soared into the air.
Wenqu glanced back at the wave behind them—it resembled an enormous tide crashing toward them. Yao Guang and Kaiyang could hardly think about anything else; this new wave was even stronger than before. Despite their swift flight, it closed in rapidly behind them.
The thunderous roars echoed in their ears as Wenqu's frail body trembled between Yao Guang and Kaiyang’s grips—not out of fear but instinctively reacting to danger. While Yao Guang and Kaiyang faced forward and couldn’t see what loomed behind them, Wenqu could clearly see several dragon forms beneath that massive wave, mouths agape as they pursued relentlessly. It felt as if just a few more meters would allow them to swallow all three whole.
As the colossal wave drew ever closer, Wenqu squeezed his eyes shut in fear.
After a tremendous roar, a shockwave surged toward the three, sweeping them away completely.
"That was terrifying, absolutely terrifying," Wenqu exclaimed in fear. He glanced back at Shu. If it hadn't been for Shu's timely arrival, the three of them would have surely been engulfed by that shockwave.
Shu released his grip on the three and stood quietly, gazing into the distance. He had intended to notify Yao Guang and Kaiyang, but they hadn't anticipated that the Dragon Clan would launch a second attack at this moment. If he hadn't arrived just in time, the lives of the three would have been in grave danger. Just as he saw them about to be swallowed by the shockwave, he almost didn't make it himself. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.
At the moment the shockwave struck, Kaiyang and Yao Guang instinctively chose to protect Wenqu with all their might. However, they hadn't expected the overwhelming force of the wave to send them tumbling. Because of this, both Kaiyang and Yao Guang felt a sense of relief; if it had been the usually frail Wenqu facing that wave alone, who knows what might have happened to him? Now, with Kaiyang and Yao Guang absorbing most of the impact for Wenqu, and Shu sharing their burden, it turned out that Wenqu remained completely unharmed.
Had it been anyone else facing such a colossal impact that slammed down like a wall, their bones would have surely shattered. Yet, the massive body of that fierce beast absorbed most of the force, leaving him unscathed.
Wenqu looked gratefully at the three.
Receiving his appreciative gaze, Kaiyang smiled and said, "As members of Big Dipper Seventh Star, we naturally share both hardships and blessings!"
Yao Guang glanced at Wenqu with a teasing look and added with a smile, "Don't look at me like that! I'm currently Xue's person; if you keep looking at me like that, he'll get jealous!"
Yao Guang's words lightened the tense atmosphere, causing both Wenqu and Kaiyang to laugh.
Shu continued to stare into the distance, realizing that the Dragon Clan had merely come to demonstrate their power. This left the deities within the courtyard in disarray and helpless. If a real fight broke out, how would they defend themselves? (To be continued.)
