At a little past one in the morning, Qin Hai dropped me off at the school gate on his motorcycle. He seemed very excited. As we parted ways, he patted my shoulder and said, "Song Fei, did you see? I knew there was something off about this case from the start. It couldn't possibly be suicide. Look, we’ve already found clues! Nothing can escape my keen eye, Hai Ge."
I felt helpless. "Law Eye Brother, hurry back. It's almost two."
"Okay!"
Qin Hai eagerly hopped back on his motorcycle and sped away.
I returned to my dormitory, feeling exhausted. Despite my fatigue, I couldn't fall asleep with my eyes closed. Although I had discovered the possible cause of Sister Yun's death, I was more concerned about that ghost—the one that had merged with Sister Yun!
I could feel Sister Yun's pain.
I needed to find that ghost quickly and completely rescue Sister Yun.
The thought of two souls fused into one was truly giving me a headache.
As I pondered this, I slowly drifted off to sleep. This time, I didn’t have nightmares; I fell into a deep slumber.
Ding ding ding…
The phone rang.
I jolted awake, and the outside world was already brightening. Chi Xiang and Yang Gou Dan were already seated in front of their computers, battling away tirelessly.
I picked up my phone to see an unfamiliar number. I answered the call, and an excited voice came through, "Hey! Song Fei, where are you?"
"I'm in the dorm, still in bed," I replied.
"I’m already at your school gate. Hurry up and come out; we have a case to solve!" Qin Hai said before hanging up.
I glanced at the time; it was already past ten in the morning. No wonder Qin Hai sounded so energetic.
I got up and washed up. After thinking for a moment, I turned to Yang Gou Dan and asked, "Dog Egg, have you ever seen two ghosts merge into one?"
Yang Gou Dan looked at me and replied, "I've never seen it, but I've heard about it. For two ghosts to merge, they need to be born at the same time on the same day, and that day usually has to be during the dark hours. We Buddhists don’t pay much attention to this, but Daoists might know more about it. It seems like you need to combine their birth dates... What the hell! Why is it always the Sword Saint? Brother Xiang, why do I keep getting killed by the Sword Saint? Aren't you supposed to be a hero who's not that impressive?"
Chi Xiang rubbed his eyes and said, "Of course! If you're a noob facing a hero who specializes in crushing weaklings, you'll think they're amazing."
Seeing the two of them getting excited over their game again made me helpless. I grabbed my backpack and headed toward the school gate.
When I arrived at the gate, Qin Hai was waiting for me in his police uniform. I guessed he must have really seen something strange last night because his attitude toward me had improved; he probably thought of me as some kind of expert. In reality, I was just an ordinary person who could see ghosts.
Qin Hai let me hop on his motorcycle. As he drove, he said, "I've already looked into the Face Mask situation. Last night, I accessed Wang Yun's shopping account from before she died and found no record of her buying any Face Masks. Today, I also checked with nearby makeup stores; they said they've never sold anything like that Brownish Red Face Mask because even if it works well, it looks too dirty for women to buy."
"You actually did all that?" I was a bit surprised.
Qin Hai laughed like someone with hyperthyroidism. "This time, I'm definitely going to get to the bottom of this case and show the captain that I have a keen eye."
We arrived at the police station, and Qin Hai led me into the Forensic Department.
As we walked, Qin Hai explained, "I handed that Face Mask over to the Forensic Department last night for testing. There must be some hallucinogens on it; I just don't know where it came from."
By the time he finished speaking, we had reached the Forensic Department.
Inside, a well-built female officer was engrossed in watching the drama "Joy of Life" on her phone.
"Hey! Beautiful Sister, any results yet?" Qin Hai approached the female officer.
She looked up and replied, "You still have the nerve to ask! You woke me up at three in the morning to test something for you. My husband thought I was having an affair!"
Qin Hai quickly offered an apologetic smile.
The female officer chuckled slightly. "Most of the test results are in. This Face Mask doesn't contain any hallucinogens or anything like that. Its composition includes some collagen and other substances. Oh, wait, there's one thing I need to mention about this Face Mask..."
She hesitated a bit.
"Come on, hurry up!" Qin Hai urged anxiously. He was on the verge of breaking down upon realizing that his instincts had once again failed him when he heard there were no hallucinogens.
The female officer glanced at me.
Qin Hai quickly added, "Oh, this is someone assisting me with the investigation; we're all on the same side. Beautiful Sister, please hurry."
The female officer nodded, wearing a white lab coat. She pulled out a list from the pocket of her coat. "Look, this is the composition of the mask. I know you probably can't understand it, but from what it shows, this Face Mask contains not only the usual ingredients found in such products but also some human flesh and blood cell tissue."
"Human... flesh?" Qin Hai looked at the officer in shock.
The officer nodded. "It could also be pork, though I think it resembles human skin more. However, this simple testing method can't confirm that; we would need genetic testing for accuracy."
Qin Hai quickly replied, "Thank you, Beautiful Sister. That will be all for now."
The officer smiled. "No need for verbal thanks; just take me out for a meal sometime."
"Sure! Oh, your husband won't get mad, will he?" Qin Hai chuckled as he pulled me out of the testing department.
Once outside, Qin Hai's expression turned serious as he looked at me. "Song Fei, what do we do now? This damn Face Mask doesn't even contain any hallucinogens. Are we going to lose this lead too?"
I shook my head quickly. "Hai Ge, even though this Face Mask doesn't have those drugs you mentioned, I'm certain that Sister Yun's suicide is absolutely connected to it. We need to find out where this Face Mask came from."
"Right. There are no stores nearby selling it, and Wang Yun didn't buy it online either. Where did she get it? Did a friend give it to her?" Qin Hai murmured.
I replied, "Sister Yun has very few friends; she usually keeps to herself... Ah! I just realized!" My heart raced as I thought of someone.
"What is it?" Qin Hai asked, his eyes lighting up.
"This mask was likely given to Sister Yun by Wang Qiang!"
“Wang Qiang?” Qin Hai couldn’t recall this person.
I nodded and said, “Wang Qiang is Sister Yun’s half-brother. I’m not sure what exactly he does for a living, but he has been visiting Sister Yun frequently since over two months ago. I know that Sister Yun and Wang Qiang don’t have a good relationship, so I haven’t had much interaction with him. Officer Qin, think about it—now that Sister Yun is dead, having committed suicide, who stands to gain the most?”
“Wang Qiang!” Qin Hai immediately clapped his hands. “According to our country’s inheritance law, when Wang Yun dies, her blood relatives will inherit her property. So even if she had a bad relationship with her father and brother, the property still belongs to them.”
“Exactly!”
Both of us snorted coldly at the same time. At this point, I was pretty sure that the face mask was given to Sister Yun by Wang Qiang.
Qin Hai said, “Alright! Song Fei, wait here for a moment; I’m going to find the captain.”
I replied, “I have classes in the afternoon and need to head back to school. You can handle it yourself; Wang Qiang is currently staying near the café, so he won’t be able to escape.”
I left the police station and returned to school.
Indeed, I had a professional class in the afternoon—Anatomy. Although I was majoring in Traditional Chinese Medicine, more than half of my courses were in Western Medicine, which is one of the more challenging aspects of being in this major.
During class, as I looked at the various human tissues in the anatomy book, my mind began to wander. I started piecing everything together.
Face Mask, Sister Yun, the merging spirit, hanging suicide… It seemed that the Face Mask was indeed made from human skin—most likely directly from a deceased person’s face. Moreover, according to Yang Gou Dan’s method, this deceased individual was born on the same day as Sister Yun. Only in this way could their souls and thoughts intertwine after Sister Yun put on the Face Mask.
Wang Qiang must have learned about this method from somewhere; he wanted to take over Sister Yun’s café and her assets. So he brought this Face Mask and gifted it to Sister Yun with a simple goal: to drive her into a split personality and then cause her death!
I realized these things and felt a pang of regret. If I had been more considerate of Sister Yun when we were together, perhaps she wouldn't have died.
When class ended, I walked outside and took out my phone to call Qin Hai, to check on how he was doing. Just as I pulled out my phone, it rang. It was Qin Hai calling.
I quickly asked, "Hai Ge, what’s going on? Did Wang Qiang admit anything?"
On the other end of the line, Qin Hai sighed. "Damn it, this guy admitted that he gave the Face Mask to Wang Yun, but he denies wanting to harm her. Plus, we can't currently test the Face Mask for specific toxic substances, so we can't convict Wang Qiang."
I knew it wouldn’t be easy to bring Wang Qiang to justice. "In that case, find out where that Face Mask came from. I've figured it out; that Face Mask must have been made from someone's face. If we investigate further, we will definitely find evidence."
Qin Hai replied, "The key point is that Wang Qiang bought the Face Mask online for thirty thousand dollars; he didn't make it himself."
"Thirty thousand dollars for a Face Mask? There’s definitely something suspicious!" I said. "Hai Ge, where are you? I’m coming to find you so we can talk in person."
