I took a car to the police station and saw Qin Hai outside.
Qin Hai looked very angry. When he saw me, he exclaimed, "Damn it, the suspect is too cunning! He won't admit to anything! It’s like he thinks I can’t handle him."
I replied, "Of course he won’t confess. That Face Mask can’t be tested for any toxic substances. However, it’s obvious that the Face Mask was contaminated by an Evil Spirit, which is why Sister Yun committed suicide."
Qin Hai nodded, "I understand that, but this reason won’t help us convict Wang Qiang, that bastard. We can’t just write that he used a Demon Slayer."
I said, "Don’t ask me about that. You saw the Evil Spirit last night too. Right now, there’s something very important we need to address."
"What is it?" Qin Hai looked at me.
I sighed and said, "Even though Sister Yun is dead, her soul is still suffering. We need to rescue her as soon as possible. By the way, we should find out where that Face Mask was bought. We need to trace the source of the Evil Spirit on it and save Sister Yun first."
Qin Hai was also eager to help and agreed with me.
As we were talking, an older detective approached us.
"Captain," Qin Hai called out.
The old detective nodded and looked at me. "Song Xiao, you remember me? I’m Chen Shan, the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division."
I smiled slightly and said, "Of course I remember you. You scared me half to death during my interrogation."
Chen Shan laughed heartily. "Come to my office; let’s talk more there."
Once we entered Chen Shan's office, he got straight to the point. "Through Qin Hai, I’ve gathered a general understanding of the case. To be direct, as an old detective who has spent his life in the Criminal Investigation Division, I often encounter cases that can’t be reported. Once we confirm these cases, we follow special procedures to close them. Right now, we can’t determine Chen Qiang’s charges, but he won’t escape legal consequences; you can rest assured."
After hearing this, I felt relieved. "Captain Chen, that puts my mind at ease. However, Sister Yun’s ghost is still being tormented. Can you continue investigating and find out more about the Face Mask?"
Chen Shan tapped his fingers on the desk. "Song Fei, this is exactly what I wanted to discuss with you today. This case cannot end here; that harmful Face Mask must be uprooted completely. However, since this involves some supernatural elements, our detectives are somewhat powerless in this regard. So I’d like to ask for your help."
"Ah?" I was taken aback, looking at Captain Chen. Then I quickly said, "Captain Chen, I'm more than willing to help you, but you might not understand—I can only see ghosts; I don't have any other abilities. I think it would be better for our police department to invite a skilled Taoist."
Captain Chen nodded. "We will definitely invite someone. I'll report to the higher-ups and have them send a few experts in the supernatural from the province. However, I've already found out the address for the production of this Face Mask. If we wait for the provincial experts to arrive, it will probably take at least half a month. I'm worried something might happen in the meantime, and as you know, Wang Yun's ghost is still suffering."
Hearing Captain Chen say this made me feel compelled to help. Besides, I really wanted to alleviate Sister Yun's pain as soon as possible. "Alright, Captain Chen, Qin Hai and I will go check on the situation with the Face Mask."
"Great!" Captain Chen sighed in relief. "Thank you, Song Fei. When you return, regardless of the outcome, our police department will have a reward for you."
"How much?" I perked up immediately. To be honest, I was really short on cash; I only had six hundred yuan left from the payment Wang Qiang had given me.
Captain Chen extended his right hand with five fingers up.
I looked at him and chuckled, "Is it five thousand or fifty thousand? Fifty thousand would be quite a lot."
Qin Hai burst into laughter beside us.
Captain Chen seemed a bit embarrassed; he scratched his head and said, "Um... it's five hundred."
"..." I was speechless. As a broke student, I couldn't even be bothered with five hundred yuan.
Captain Chen hurriedly added, "I know it's a bit low for a reward, but our police department is also tight on funds. However, don't worry; we'll reimburse your travel expenses and accommodation."
I decided not to dwell on that anymore. "Perfect! Let's set off next Saturday."
Captain Chen nodded. "Alright, you two stay focused. By the way, I'll give you a certificate so that if you need assistance from the local police station, you can show it."
After we finished discussing everything, I checked the address.
Wang Qiang had purchased this Face Mask from a WeChat business, and it was delivered to him via express mail. Now we couldn't contact that WeChat business anymore. However, after checking the tracking number with Shentong Express, we pinpointed the shipping address for the Face Mask to Stone Pot Town in Siyang County, Suqian City, Jiangsu Province.
Qin Hai and I bought train tickets to Suqian for an overnight sleeper train that would get us there early the next morning.
Back in my dormitory, I packed two pieces of clothing. I really wanted to bring Yang Gou Dan along, but seeing him engrossed in his game made me give up on that idea.
I walked over to Yang Gou Dan and said, "Master of Restraint, can you take a look at my face and see if I'm in any danger?"
Yang Gou Dan impatiently lifted his head and glanced at me. "Don't worry, there's no danger. Even if there is, I can turn misfortune into fortune... Haha! That damn Sword Saint, Buddha must be feeling great this time. Did you see that, Fei? Check out how sharp my moves were just now. He thinks he can turn misfortune into fortune too; he should take a look at what gear I have."
I kicked Yang Gou Dan, not wanting to deal with him anymore. With my bag on my back, I headed to the train station.
By eight-thirty in the evening, it was time for our meeting, but I still hadn't seen Qin Hai.
I called Qin Hai, and he sounded quite apologetic on the other end. His mother had suddenly suffered a heart attack that evening and was now hospitalized. He couldn't join me for the trip and asked me to go ahead first. He would come find me once his mother's condition stabilized.
Upon hearing that Qin Hai's mother was sick and in the hospital, I couldn't press him further. I boarded the train alone.
The more I thought about it, the funnier it seemed. Here I was, just an ordinary college student, now turned private detective, off to investigate the matter of Face Mask.
But since my travel and accommodation expenses would be reimbursed, plus a five-hundred-dollar reward, I might as well consider it a part-time job.
I had booked a soft sleeper compartment with four beds. Aside from mine and Qin Hai's beds, there were two others occupied by a man and a woman who looked like a couple traveling together. They had large backpacks and seemed quite excited throughout the journey.
I placed my bag on the upper bunk; since Qin Hai wasn't coming after all, I didn't have to worry about anyone else sleeping there.
The couple next to me was busy looking through their camera. It was a DSLR with a long lens; it was clear they weren't short on money.
They chatted and laughed until they decided to sleep. The woman insisted that the man take the upper bunk while she stayed below so they could continue talking.
The man tried to persuade her otherwise.
Eventually, they both lay on their sides in the lower bunk.
The bed was actually quite narrow, but the woman was slim and wore very short shorts. Once the lights were out, they cuddled together; I couldn't tell what they were up to.
I sighed; this was what real couple torture looked like—sitting on a train without peace while enduring the sounds of the woman’s breathing beside me.
I thought of Sister Yun, recalling the moments we had rolled around in that room, and I felt a stir of emotions.
If only Sister Yun hadn't died.
As I pondered, the sound of the train clattering lulled me to sleep.
In my dream, it was so cold, perhaps the air conditioning was set too high. I reached out to pull the blanket over me.
"Hey handsome, do you want it?" A voice came through, hazy and indistinct.
I was momentarily stunned, looking ahead at a blurry shadow.
"Sister Yun? Is that you?" I immediately thought of her.
The shadow giggled softly as she approached. It was indeed Sister Yun, and she wasn't wearing her mask.
My heart ached. "Sister Yun, don't worry. I will save you. I will help you move on and take revenge for you."
Sister Yun continued to smile. "Don't seek revenge for me. Fei, go back to your school and forget about me."
"No! You're not Sister Yun! You're the ghost that caused Sister Yun's death!" I shouted.
Sister Yun kept laughing softly as she drew closer. "Fei, I am Sister Yun. I am also Pei. We are one and the same. Be good, Fei, listen to your sister and return to school. I'll give you what you want, okay?" With that, the shadow leaned against my leg and pulled down my pants.
I knew I was dreaming and wanted to wake up, but I hesitated because even in this dream, I felt so comfortable—exceedingly comfortable.
I wanted to resist, but Sister Yun's lips were warm, making it hard for me to let go.
I sensed that this was wrong, so I reached out to push Sister Yun away.
However, my hand touched something soft and warm.
I froze for a moment. What was happening? Why did this feeling seem so real?
At that moment, I heard a faint, murmuring woman's voice beside my ear.
The sound was not loud, but it felt very real.
Suddenly, I sensed something was wrong—very wrong.
My mind jolted awake, and I opened my eyes to find everything shrouded in darkness.
In the dark, a woman with long hair was lying on my legs.
My hand was resting on her chest.
The crucial part was that, although it was dark all around, I realized this was not a dream! There truly was a long-haired, completely naked woman on top of me!
