The next morning, my phone rang. It was Liu Yiyi calling to tell me that she would pick me up at nine o'clock downstairs from my dormitory.
At nine, I slung my bag over my shoulder and walked downstairs. Below, Liu Yiyi's Jaguar was parked.
I got into the car, and as Liu Yiyi drove, she said, "Song Fei, I told my dad about Wei Qiang. He agreed to annul the engagement, but... he doesn't want us to ask too many questions about it."
"Why?" I asked, puzzled.
Liu Yiyi replied, "My dad is a businessman. He thinks it's best to let this matter go because offending the Wei family isn't worth it; it goes against a businessman's principles. Besides, the Wei family is very powerful. Even if we went to court, we might not win."
I fell silent.
Before long, the car stopped at the East Sea City Public Security Bureau. Liu Yiyi and I got out and headed toward the Criminal Investigation Division. As we walked, passing detectives glanced at Liu Yiyi; it seemed that even police officers appreciated beauty.
We arrived at the Criminal Investigation Division office, and I led her directly to Chen Shan.
We recounted Wang Shao's case to Chen Shan.
After listening, Chen Shan furrowed his brow and remained silent.
"Captain Chen," I said, "Wang Shao was truly unfortunate. She died and ended up with such a terrible reputation. It's no wonder she became a ghost unable to reincarnate."
Chen Shan rubbed his temples and replied, "The key issue is evidence. To reopen a case, we need new evidence that proves the previous conclusion was wrong. But we can't find any solid evidence. We can't just rely on Wang Shao's ghost to tell us what happened."
I fell silent again.
Chen Shan continued, "What's more important is that there are no doubts in this case. From the case files, Wang Shao and Wei Qiang are indeed a couple. Furthermore, Wang Shao's behavior is clearly problematic, and she did die from a drug overdose. The evidence is conclusive, with no room for doubt."
"But Wang Shao was coerced," Liu Yiyi couldn't hold back any longer and spoke up. "Officer, Wang Shao is a very unfortunate woman; we have to help her! Moreover, after becoming involved with the ghost, she never intended to harm anyone and constantly warned me to avoid falling for Wei Qiang's tricks. I must help her."
Chen Shan rubbed his forehead and said, "Calm down for a moment. I am a police officer, and I want to catch that bastard even more than you do. However, without evidence, we can't take action. Besides, Wei Qiang has some connections. I'm not afraid of losing my position, but I'm worried about the two of you getting hurt."
Liu Yiyi lowered her head and fell silent.
Chen Shan said, "Here's what we'll do: Song Fei, Liu Yiyi, I'll investigate Wei Qiang further in secret. There's no way to reopen Wang Shao's case, but I can try other avenues. Perhaps this person has committed other offenses."
I could see that Chen Shan was also in a difficult position. Wei Qiang was meticulous in his actions and left no traces behind. Additionally, he had too many people willing to take the fall for him; even if we found something illegal he had done, it would be of little use.
Liu Yiyi and I walked out of the police station. Liu Yiyi sighed, "I didn't expect it to be so difficult to catch Wei Qiang."
I had no words; perhaps I had already prepared myself for this outcome. After all, in this society, human nature can be treacherous. I've often heard elders say that people can be scarier than ghosts; perhaps that's true.
Once in the car, Liu Yiyi drove me back to school.
"Song Fei, no matter what happens, thank you so much this time," Liu Yiyi said.
I smiled slightly. "It's my honor to assist a beautiful woman. Besides, Goddess Liu Yiyi, you must remember to find that book for me; it's very important!"
Liu Yiyi smiled back beautifully. From the side view, she looked every bit the goddess. However, I didn't stare too long; I felt that our current relationship was quite good—neither too hot nor too cold—just friends. I dared not wish for anything more.
Liu Yiyi drove up to the entrance of our school where four people were standing. Upon seeing Liu Yiyi's car approach, they surrounded it and blocked our path.
I saw one of the people was Wei Qiang, who was holding a large bouquet of flowers as he walked toward the driver's side and knocked on the window.
Liu Yiyi looked at Wei Qiang coldly, rolled down the car window, and said in a frosty tone, "Wei Qiang, what do you want?"
Taking advantage of Liu Yiyi's distraction, Wei Qiang reached in and twisted the car key twice before pulling it out, turning off the Jaguar.
Liu Yiyi was taken aback and raised her voice, "Wei Qiang, what are you trying to do?"
Wei Qiang chuckled, holding the flowers. "Liu Yiyi, let me explain. I really didn't run away last night out of cowardice. I wanted to go out and find someone to deal with that ghost. Really, just forgive me this once. You can't end our engagement over this, right?"
Hearing Wei Qiang's words, I realized that he still didn't know the reason Liu Yiyi had called off the engagement.
It seemed Liu Yiyi's father hadn't told Wei Qiang the truth; he had only said that Wei Qiang had fled during a crisis, which led to the engagement being terminated. There was no mention of Wang Shao.
Liu Yiyi replied, "Give me back my car keys. And you know what disgusting things you've done. I already know what kind of person you are, so stop pretending to be a good person."
Wei Qiang's face shifted between shades of green and red as he looked at Liu Yiyi. Finally, he gritted his teeth and said, "Fine, Liu Yiyi. You're something else. You dare to have your dad call off the engagement and slap me in the face? And now you're bold enough to walk around with this guy? Damn it, you're going to ditch me for some loser? I swear I'll make you regret it. Do you believe me?"
With that, Wei Qiang walked over to the passenger seat and yanked open the door. He shouted at me, "Get out of here, loser! You dared to kick me out of bed and flirt with my girlfriend? You really don't know your place."
I felt a surge of anger as I watched Wei Qiang act so arrogantly. I tossed my backpack onto the seat, unbuckled my seatbelt, and kicked him hard in the stomach.
Anyone can fight; this idiot had caused Wang Shao so much trouble and still acted so cocky while trying to hit on Liu Yiyi.
Although Wei Qiang worked out regularly, fighting is about ruthlessness, and I wasn't afraid of him.
Wei Qiang clutched his stomach, shouting in frustration, "Kill him! Hurry up, kill him!"
The other three closed in on me, and it dawned on me that Wei Qiang wasn’t alone; he was with four people. One of them grabbed my waist while another kicked me to the ground.
The three of them were ruthless, kicking me mercilessly.
I could only curl up and protect my head, shielding my face and my brain.
"Stop it! Get away from him! Security, security, come here!" Liu Yiyi shouted as she got out of the car.
A few security guards rushed over and pushed Wei Qiang's group away. However, they didn’t dare to provoke Wei Qiang; they merely separated them without taking further action.
Wei Qiang looked at me with a disdainful smile. "Kid, this is just the beginning. Remember, I can make it so you can't stay in Donghai City. I'll find a chance to kill you."
I lay on the ground, unable to move.
Wei Qiang spat on the ground and then turned to Liu Yiyi, tossing her the car keys. "Liu Yiyi, I won't give up. The woman I want, no one can refuse. I'll come to pick you up for dinner tomorrow. I'm leaving." With that, Wei Qiang waved his hand and got into the nearby Land Rover with his companions before speeding off.
Damn it, that idiot is so arrogant!
I felt a surge of anger and a vicious thought crossed my mind!
I clenched my fists tightly.
"Song Fei, are you okay?" Liu Yiyi squatted beside me, supporting my neck with her hand.
I turned my head, momentarily stunned, realizing I could easily see under Liu Yiyi's skirt. The sight of her cartoon-patterned fabric and her fair thighs made me suddenly feel as if the pain in my body had vanished.
Liu Yiyi suddenly gave me a light slap.
I quickly looked up.
To my surprise, Liu Yiyi had noticed my reaction. Her face flushed slightly, and she pouted her alluring lips, saying, "You’re like this, yet you still can’t behave."
I awkwardly smiled and replied, "It was a reflex, sorry about that."
"Are you okay?" Liu Yiyi asked with concern as she gently touched my lips.
I felt quite touched and replied, "I'm fine; this little injury is nothing."
Liu Yiyi helped me up and insisted on taking me to the hospital.
I declined.
Liu Yiyi wouldn’t take no for an answer and insisted on accompanying me.
After thinking it over, I figured my leg might be injured. It would be better to apply some antiseptic; I didn’t want it to get infected.
"Alright then, take me to our school's Affiliated Hospital. I have a nurse friend there who can help me with some medicine," I said.
After Liu Yiyi drove me to the hospital, I didn’t let her come inside and told her to go back.
I'm currently burning with anger. Damn it, evil begets evil; I refuse to believe I can't deal with that bastard Wei Qiang.
As I entered the hospital, I headed towards the area where Qin Yuan was on duty.
Qin Yuan is a nurse, probably around seventeen or eighteen years old. Don't let her age fool you; she has already been working at this hospital for a year. As a medical student, I'm somewhat familiar with the nurses at the Affiliated Hospital. Even though I'm a Traditional Chinese Medicine Major, I often have to attend lab classes here and do some volunteer work in the hospital, so I've gotten to know them fairly well.
When I arrived at the duty room, a nurse informed me that Qin Yuan was in Dressing Room No. 1 next door. I walked over, and as I pushed the door open, I saw a man lying on the Surgical Bed with his pants down, revealing a disgusting patch of dark hair.
This patient had just undergone circumcision and was likely having his bandages changed.
Standing at the entrance of the Dressing Room, I noticed that the patient was deliberately using his palm to touch Qin Yuan's backside.
I couldn't hold back any longer. The doctor-patient relationship is tense these days, and many patients take advantage of this to bully nurses. Many nurses dare not speak up. But I wasn't afraid; I'm just a medical student and don't work in this hospital, so I didn't have to worry about these patients causing trouble.
I walked over and shouted loudly, "Hey! What are you doing!"
