I asked, "Do you know the name of that child's mother? Where is she now, Aunt Wang?"
Wang Hanying shook her head. "The girl registered a name, but I suspect it's fake. However, while I don't know her, I do know her boyfriend. Before she was pregnant, she came to my clinic twice with a man. I think they must be a couple, and that man is likely the child's father."
"That's good to know. What is the man's name? Where can I find him?" I inquired.
"The man is a teacher at Donghai Normal University named Lin Xiaosheng. He used to teach at a nearby school, but I don't know where he is now," Wang Hanying replied.
I glanced at Ouyang Shan. "I'll go find this Lin Xiaosheng."
Ouyang Shan said, "We need to hurry. Tomorrow is when it is at its weakest and least intelligent. If we miss tomorrow night, it will become increasingly difficult to eliminate it."
"I'll do my best," I assured.
Qin Hai chimed in, "No problem. I can find this Lin Xiaosheng."
I nodded. "Alright, finding him shouldn't be an issue. Once we talk to them, they should agree. The only question is how to lure the Ghost Fetus ashore."
Ouyang Shan replied, "That's simple. Just have the Ghost Fetus's parents sit on a boat and row back and forth near Rainbow Bridge while saying some things to provoke the Ghost Fetus. It won't be able to resist; once it surfaces, Buddha can use the Formless Buddha Beads to eliminate it."
I said, "Okay, let's do that. But just in case, we need to find a sturdy metal boat, preferably a larger one."
After discussing for a while, we each went back to rest.
The next morning, Qin Hai rode his motorcycle and took me to Donghai Normal University. When we arrived at the entrance, he made a phone call. Shortly after, a tall middle-aged man came out to meet us. He led us into the school, and along the way, I learned that Lin Xiaosheng was now the director of the Teaching Office.
Upon arriving at the Teaching Office, we pushed the door open and walked in. A man wearing black glasses sat behind the desk; he looked to be no more than thirty, quite young, but for some reason, there was a sense of weariness in his eyes.
Qin Hai and I stepped inside, and I asked, "Excuse me, are you Mr. Lin Xiaosheng?"
The man looked up at us and nodded slightly. "That's me. What can I do for you?"
I hadn't expected to find Lin Xiaosheng so easily. I took a seat on the sofa and said, "Three years ago, one of your girlfriends became pregnant, but she later had an abortion. You should know about this, right?"
Lin Xiaosheng paused for a moment, and then a hint of pain flickered in his eyes. He stood up, closed the office door, and sat down across from us. "Yes, I know. Why are you asking about this?"
I let out a sigh of relief. "Mr. Lin, please believe what I'm about to say. The fetus your girlfriend aborted has turned into a Ghost Fetus. Now that the Ghost Fetus has appeared and is very powerful, we believe it will seek revenge on you and your girlfriend. I'm here to help you. I know this is hard to believe, but..."
"I believe you." Lin Xiaosheng looked at me and rubbed his temples. "I believe you because I've been having nightmares for the past two years, and I keep recalling the past without peace. What do you want me to do now?"
I replied, "We need to find the mother of that Ghost Fetus. Then I need both of you to act as bait to lure it out so we can eliminate it!"
Lin Xiaosheng lowered his head in thought before looking back up at me. "Can I just be the bait? There's no need for her to be involved."
I was taken aback for a moment before responding, "It's best if both of you participate. If only one person is involved, it would be more appropriate for her to be the bait."
Qin Hai chimed in from the side, "Mr. Lin, please understand that this may sound strange, but our Criminal Investigation Team has been following this case closely; everything this gentleman says is true."
Lin Xiaosheng sighed. "Alright then... Her name is Yu; she teaches at Yuhua Academy nearby. You can find her there."
Noticing that Lin Xiaosheng's expression was somewhat troubled, I said, "Mr. Lin, I'm sorry to ask this, but why did she choose to abort the child back then? Was it due to relationship issues?"
Lin Xiaosheng lowered his head and fell silent for a moment before answering, "I suppose so. We were involved in a teacher-student relationship. When I came to Donghai Normal University to teach right after graduating with my doctorate at twenty-six, she was in her third year at twenty-two. We fell in love unexpectedly despite the pressure we faced at that time; our relationship was strong enough that we were discussing marriage. However, she secretly had an abortion and broke up with me afterward. I pleaded with her desperately, but she was resolute; she left before even receiving her diploma."
I asked, "So you haven't tried to find her in these three years?"
"No, there's really nothing to look for. I know she's teaching over there, but there's not much to talk about anymore. I helped get her graduation certificate and sent it to her, and after that, we haven't communicated through letters again," Lin Xiaosheng replied.
Qin Hai, uninterested in these matters, said, "We don't have much time. Let's find Yu first, then we need to arrange the boat and tonight's plans. Let's move quickly."
I turned to Lin Xiaosheng and said, "Mr. Lin, please come with us. This is important; take the day off today."
"Alright." Lin Xiaosheng didn't say much. He made a phone call to request a leave of absence, changed into a jacket, and left with us.
Downstairs was a Cayenne. Lin Xiaosheng opened the car door for us to get in.
I was a bit surprised. The head of the Teaching Office is this wealthy? Driving a car worth over a million? Even more extravagant than Liu Yiyi.
Lin Xiaosheng drove towards Yuhua Academy. When we arrived at the school gate, he said, "I'll wait for you outside. You two go in and find her." With that, he lit a cigarette and squatted by the car door, smoking quietly.
I found it hard to understand Lin Xiaosheng but didn't dwell on it as I walked towards Yuhua Academy. Soon enough, I spotted Yu—the mother of the Ghost Fetus—who looked somewhat worn out.
"Hello, I need to talk to you about something regarding your child from three years ago," I said.
Yu was taken aback for a moment before nodding. Although she appeared aged, there was still a hint of beauty in her features; she just hadn't bothered to dress up, giving off a sense of neglect.
"Let's talk in my dorm; it's too crowded here," Yu said as she led Qin Hai and me into an independent but somewhat shabby dormitory.
Yu's dorm was tidy, but the furniture was old and the space quite limited—there wasn't even a sofa.
She forced a smile and said, "Make yourselves comfortable; it's rather simple here. So, what is it about?"
I sat down on a Maza and said, "Here's the thing. The child you lost three years ago has now turned into a Ghost Fetus. I believe you've sensed it; you've been having nightmares lately, right?"
Yu looked visibly stunned for a moment, then lowered his head. "So that's how it is. I’m sorry for him. If he seeks revenge on me, it’s only right."
"Uh... we came to you because we want to eliminate that Ghost Fetus. Last night, we couldn't catch it; it slipped back into the river. Tonight, you need to work with Lin Xiaosheng to lure that Ghost Fetus out. Do you think you can do that?" I asked.
Yu sighed and nodded. "Alright."
I let out a sigh of relief. This pair of individuals seemed so agreeable that I felt a glimmer of hope; I believed tonight's operation would go smoothly.
Yu couldn't take time off work, so he would come after his shift in the afternoon. I assured him that we would wait for him at school.
Then, Qin Hai and I went to borrow a metal boat. This wasn't a wooden one; it was a sturdy vessel made of metal and concrete, equipped with a motor. Although the boat was quite large, it was perfect for our mission tonight.
As night fell, dark clouds gathered ominously overhead, pressing down low and making me feel suffocated.
I first called Yang Gou Dan and Chi Xiang to come over. They arrived quickly. This time, Yang Gou Dan was dressed in a robe and carried Formless Buddha Beads, looking serious—clearly taking tonight's operation seriously.
I also called Lin Xiaosheng and Yu. Before long, Lin Xiaosheng arrived at the bridge in his Cayenne, followed shortly by Yu who took a taxi to Rainbow Bridge.
Taking a deep breath, I addressed Lin Xiaosheng and Yu: "You two don’t need to worry too much. We’ve prepared thoroughly for this. From now on, just sit on the boat; I'll handle the steering and do my best to protect you."
Both Lin Xiaosheng and Yu kept their heads down and nodded casually.
I turned to Ouyang Shan: "Ouyang Daozhang, it's up to you to handle things on the shore. Make sure that Yang Gou Dan doesn’t cause any trouble."
Upon hearing this, Yang Gou Dan immediately replied, "Hey, Song Fei, you should pay attention to your own safety too. While the metal boat is sturdy, that Ghost Fetus might still break through."
"Shut your crow's mouth and wait patiently." I then took Lin Xiaosheng and Yu onto the boat. They sat at the edge of the boat while I stood at the front near the motor, steering.
I knew that the Ghost Fetus was definitely hiding beneath the Rainbow Bridge. Although I wasn't sure of the exact location, it had to be within a few hundred meters since Wei Qiang had fallen into the river and died right here. I just needed to maneuver the boat back and forth in this area.
The clouds hung low in the sky, and I began to worry. At this rate, it would start raining soon, and if there was thunder, the Ghost Fetus wouldn't dare to show itself.
I drove the metal boat, making a "tap tap tap" sound as I turned it around on the water surface twice, but there was no movement beneath.
I started to feel anxious. Turning to Lin Xiaosheng and Yu behind me, I urged, "Talk! Let that thing below hear you. It's about to rain; we need to hurry."
The two remained silent until finally, Lin Xiaosheng spoke up, looking at Yu. "You... how have you been lately?"
