Gravekeeper
"Mm." Yu lowered her head, her voice barely audible.
I sat at the bow of the boat, watching the two of them talk like strangers. It was a bit frustrating, so I said, "Weren't you two lovers before? Why does it feel so distant? Speak up a little, let the Ghost Fetus hear you."
"Shut up!"
Lin Xiaosheng suddenly stood up and shouted at me.
I was taken aback, looking at this usually quiet man, unsure of what had gotten into him.
After yelling at me, Lin Xiaosheng straightened up and faced Yu, raising his voice. "Tell me, how could you abandon me? How could you! You terminated the pregnancy without my consent; why did you do that?"
Yu also looked up at Lin Xiaosheng. "Your family didn't agree; what could I do?"
"Clatter..."
At that moment, large raindrops suddenly began to fall from the sky, hitting Lin Xiaosheng's face. He wiped his face, unsure if it was tears or rainwater, and shouted, "Aren't we supposed to face the pressure together? I took on all the burdens for you; I loved you so much! But you gave up first! I thought if we could just get through that tough time, everything would be fine. How could you just give up? Why couldn't you hold on for those last few months?"
Yu simply lowered her head and began to cry.
In the distance, an empty sand transport ship slowly approached us.
Listening to the argument between Lin Xiaosheng and Yu felt suffocating. I steered the metal boat slowly away from the sand transport ship.
Suddenly, there was a series of loud noises—"Peh peh peh peh..."—and then that large sand transport ship suddenly belched black smoke and accelerated toward our metal boat. I was startled; my mind suddenly clicked!
It must be the work of the Ghost Fetus! Although the Ghost Fetus was injured, it was still powerful. It probably sensed that our boat was meant to lure it in. Instead of jumping directly onto the water surface, it flew onto that sand transport ship and confused the crew!
The eyes of the Ghost Fetus were incredibly domineering, capable of inducing hallucinations. There was no doubt about it; this sand transport ship was definitely under its influence.
As I felt a pang of regret in my heart, a loud crash echoed, and our boat was capsized. Before the massive sand transport vessel, my metal boat was as fragile as paper, flipping over in an instant.
The three of us fell into the water.
Yu clearly couldn't swim; she flailed about in the water, splashing and then began to sink beneath the surface.
Lin Xiaosheng quickly grabbed Yu by the neck, preventing her from going under.
"Don't worry about me!" Yu shouted. "Get to shore quickly! The Ghost Fetus is in the water!"
"No, don't move! I'll get you out!" Lin Xiaosheng held onto Yu tightly. The two who had just been arguing were suddenly bound together by life and death.
I knew this was bad. Even Yang Gou Dan wouldn't stand a chance against the Ghost Fetus in the water, let alone the three of us. I shouted to Ouyang Shan and Qin Hai, urging them to throw us a rope quickly.
Just then, a whirlpool suddenly formed on the water's surface. It had a strong suction force that pulled Lin Xiaosheng and Yu down into the depths.
A chill ran through me; this had to be the Ghost Fetus arriving. I hesitated for a second, then drew my Peach Wood Sword, biting down on it as I swam after Lin Xiaosheng and Yu.
I was a decent swimmer, having grown up in the mountains, but at that moment, my hands and legs felt unresponsive, trembling uncontrollably.
I was terrified, yet I didn't want to watch Lin Xiaosheng and Yu die like this.
The water below was dark; I could see nothing. With a Ghost Fetus lurking nearby, it was impossible not to be afraid.
But I didn't want to give up; I couldn't let Lin Xiaosheng and Yu lose their lives in vain. Holding my breath, I had no idea where to find them.
"Ugh... bang..."
A sound came from not far away—dull and muffled—but that's how sound travels underwater.
I heard a sound, and suddenly felt alert. Without thinking, I swam towards the source of the noise.
Not far away, a beam of light suddenly illuminated the area. It was bright and clearly coming from a Powerful Flashlight, which was also waterproof. I opened my eyes and immediately saw that it was Lin Xiaosheng holding the Powerful Flashlight.
Lin Xiaosheng held the Powerful Flashlight in one hand while cradling Yu in the other. He waved the flashlight vigorously, trying to scare away the Ghost Fetus in front of them with its beam.
In front of Lin Xiaosheng stood a Ghost Fetus over a meter tall, silently watching them.
Lin Xiaosheng continued to shake the flashlight, attempting to frighten the Ghost Fetus away.
The Ghost Fetus feared the strong light; it flinched slightly, its eyes filled with hatred and malice, mockingly gazing at Lin Xiaosheng and Yu.
Lin Xiaosheng was getting tired as he struggled to pull Yu up towards safety.
At that moment, Yu suddenly broke free from Lin Xiaosheng's embrace and lunged towards the Ghost Fetus.
This action startled both me and Lin Xiaosheng. Even the Ghost Fetus seemed completely taken aback.
In that instant, Yu threw herself at the Ghost Fetus without any regard for her safety. After landing on it, she opened her mouth and bit down on the Ghost Fetus's head. The head had already been split in two by my Swastika Buddha Seal, and now, as Yu bit down, dark liquid gushed out.
The Ghost Fetus screamed in pain, opening its mouth wide to bite down hard on Yu's shoulder. However, Yu was like a female Zombie, completely ignoring her pain. She used both hands to pry open the fissure on the Ghost Fetus's head again while biting at its face, eyes, ears—anything she could reach!
The most lethal aspect of the Ghost Fetus was its Ghost Eyes, but at that moment, it couldn't even meet Yu's gaze; it could only retaliate by biting back at her.
Yu's arms quickly turned a deep purple-black color from Corpse Poison.
Lin Xiaosheng was momentarily stunned but then picked up the Powerful Flashlight and swam frantically towards the Ghost Fetus.
I knew this was the right moment. I swiftly swam over, grabbed my Peach Wood Sword, and thrust it into the Ghost Fetus's rear before pulling it back towards the water surface.
Lin Xiaosheng seemed to have realized what was happening. He dragged the jade towards the Water Surface. Once they reached the Water Surface, Lin Xiaosheng shone his Powerful Flashlight, and together we lifted the jade and the Ghost Fetus onto the Water Surface.
Above the Water Surface, Yang Gou Dan must have been anxious for a long time. Upon seeing the flashlight beam, he wasted no time and raised his hand. The Formless Buddha Beads transformed into a beam of golden light that shot towards the Ghost Fetus on the Water Surface. With a loud crash, it smashed the Ghost Fetus's head.
Immediately, the Ghost Fetus turned into a cloud of black mist, which began to rise slowly and dissipate.
Lin Xiaosheng completely ignored the fate of the Ghost Fetus. He shouted loudly, "Hurry! Save her! You all need to hurry!"
A rope flew over, and Lin Xiaosheng grabbed it tightly. Holding onto the jade's body, he desperately swam towards the shore. The jade had turned completely black; the Corpse Poison was too strong to save her.
Lin Xiaosheng was frantic. Once he reached the shore, he held the jade tightly and desperately performed Artificial Respiration on her.
The jade suddenly coughed up water, which contained pieces of the Ghost Fetus's decayed flesh, with worms writhing on top.
"Xiaosheng, don’t... don’t be sad," the jade opened her eyes weakly.
"Don’t talk! Just don’t say anything! I will definitely save you! Where’s the ambulance? Where is it?" Lin Xiaosheng shouted frantically.
I was exhausted like a dead dog as I crawled onto the shore. Seeing Lin Xiaosheng's sorrowful expression made my heart ache.
The jade slowly shook her head and whispered, "I'm sorry, Xiaosheng, but I don’t want you to be this sad. I just want... I just want you to be happy."
"If you die, how can I be happy? What’s the point of living? For three years, I've worked hard and earned money just to show you how foolish it was for you to leave me back then! I want you to regret it! Jade, don’t die! If you die, how will I go on living?" Lin Xiaosheng cried out.
Tears streamed from Jade's eyes as she smiled weakly. "Silly... forget about me."
"No! I won't forgive you; you can't die!" Lin Xiaosheng yelled.
Jade laughed through her tears as she weakly spoke, "Xiaosheng, you are my... beloved. I don’t want you to be sad; I never wanted that. Three years ago, for my sake, you bore criticism from school leaders and pressure from public opinion. I know your suffering; I know you always... struggled to sleep at night. I know you sang in bars just to buy us a house. I also know that school leaders wanted to expel you because of your scandalous behavior... But my love, you are so talented. A leader approached me; she said that if I left you and aborted our child, your future would be bright. You would become the youngest associate professor at school; you would sing and write poetry, and there would be better girls who would love you. My love would only lead to your exhaustion..."
Lin Xiaosheng shook his head, "No, Yu, what are you talking about?"
"I lost... the child, I left... left you. I saw... saw you being promoted to... associate professor, saw you marrying the daughter of a board member, saw you become the head of the Teaching Office. You were only twenty-nine, dear. You would be the most successful person, the pride of your friends and family... I saw you happy, and that made me... content..." As she spoke, Yu's breath grew weaker.
Raindrops fell, splashing on her face, clearly reflecting the wrinkles etched there. They were the marks of sorrow and toil from three years.
"No... you can't die... Yu, without you, I've never been truly happy!" Lin Xiaosheng collapsed onto Yu's body.
At that moment, Qin Hai's phone suddenly rang, playing the familiar tune of "Dusty Fate":
Reaching out my hand, unable to touch
Opening my eyes, unable to see your face
Buddha, will we meet in this life
To conclude a past life's dusty fate
Thus I wander in this world
Waiting for your appearance
Time changes, years flow
How to recognize your face in this life
The past is a sealed old photograph
A vaguely crying face
Written all over with longing in my eyes and brows
Yet it comes out as silence
Meeting you is a calamity or a fate
And in destiny there is bound to be
A transformation of dislocation...
I stared blankly at Lin Xiaosheng and Yu on the ground, my mind filled only with a few lines of lyrics: "Buddha, we will meet in this life, to conclude a past entanglement... Meeting you is both a calamity and a fate, destined to have a transformation of displacement..."
I gasped for breath, not understanding why, but at that moment, my heart ached so painfully that it made me convulse, even rendering me unable to breathe.
Suddenly, my mind went completely black, and then I fainted...
