I finally understood why I felt so uncomfortable when I saw that old woman; she was clearly a monster that raised ghosts!
The large tumor on her face was the dwelling place of the spirits, a ghost tumor!
"Why are you doing this? You made Zhao Min and Zhao Yin become Minghun, and you had everyone in the village act as matchmakers. Is it your intention to kill them?" I asked, looking up at her while thinking about how to deal with the situation before me.
The Old Witch looked at me with a sinister gaze, completely dismissing me. She simply laughed ominously, "You're right; I want everyone in the Village to be cursed and die. The more of them that die, the worse it is for them, the longer I can live! Once they are cursed and die without a resting place, they will have no choice but to reside in my ghost tumor, obeying my commands. Hehehe..."
I realized completely that this Old Witch deliberately cursed everyone in the village. Those who died from the curse would naturally be unable to reincarnate or exist in the world; their souls could only hide within the Old Witch's ghost tumor, living off her.
I took a deep breath. "It’s one thing for others, but Zhao Min’s parents are your own brother and sister-in-law! How could you be so cruel to them, letting them die unjustly? What is your purpose in doing this?"
"Cruel? Heh heh, they were cruel first! If it weren't for that bastard of a brother marrying me off to a village near the Chemical Plant, how would my family have been destroyed? My husband died, my mother-in-law died, my son died, my daughter died— even my unborn grandson died! What did I do wrong to deserve such suffering? The people of that village cursed me; they said I brought misfortune upon my husband and children. They called me a monster with a tumor on my face, a woman full of malice. They locked me in the Mountain, forcing me to endure wind and rain and starve. I have suffered greatly; all my relatives are dead, yet those villagers are still so despicable. Since that’s the case, why shouldn’t I take revenge?"
The Old Witch's resentment grew stronger as she shouted loudly, "It was clearly the water from the Chemical Plant that killed those people! Why should they blame me? Since they wronged me, why should I feel pity? Heh heh, how pitiful! The tumor on my face is actually the best dwelling place for vengeful spirits. I seized the opportunity to kill everyone in that village; I let them live forever in curses and never reincarnate! As for my Brother Wang and sister-in-law, they deserved to die even more. If it weren’t for them marrying me off, would I have suffered such torment?"
As she spoke, dark energy surrounded her more intensely until she lifted her feet off the ground on her toes. She began to cackle wickedly. With a wave of her hand, thick clouds of black mist erupted from the tumor on her face. These mists transformed into countless Vengeful Spirits—mindless Vengeful Spirits—rushing toward us with ghostly shadows blocking out the sun and howling angrily as if they wanted to swallow us whole.
I swallowed hard at the sight and turned to Wen Yan. "Quickly, throw me up there! We have no choice but to fight!"
Without hesitation, Wen Yan squatted down and supported my backside.
I kicked hard with both legs while Wen Yan pushed me up with all his strength. We coordinated perfectly; I shot up out of the grave pit and charged toward the Old Witch with my Peach Wood Sword in one hand and a Swiss Army knife in the other. I knew that as long as I could stab the Old Witch first, everything would be fine.
The surrounding Vengeful Spirits closed in on me.
I ignored them.
However, I soon realized that while I was ignoring the Vengeful Spirits, they were not ignoring me. There were hundreds of them blocking my way. Although I wasn't afraid of their ghostly poison, I found myself unable to rush toward the Old Witch.
The Old Witch laughed maniacally as countless Vengeful Spirits charged at me, clawing and grasping. There were too many spirits for me to handle, and in an instant, I was left bruised all over.
I sighed inwardly, suddenly regretting my choices. If only I hadn't slept with Qin Yuan, I wouldn't have been involved with Zhao Ke's affairs. If I hadn't inquired about Zhao Ke's death, I wouldn't have come into contact with Zhao Yin. If I hadn't met Zhao Yin, I wouldn't have been dragged into this Minghun and wouldn't be facing death here.
As I wallowed in my frustration, a sudden scream pierced the air. "Ah!" I turned sharply to see that Wen Yan had been pinned beneath Zhao Min's feet in the grave!
To my horror, Zhao Min's corpse had risen from the grave!
A chill ran down my spine as I realized the Corpse Fixing Talisman had worn off! But honestly, it didn't matter anymore; whether it was one tiger or two tigers, it made no difference. Even if Zhao Min hadn't broken free from the Corpse Fixing Talisman, Wen Yan and Zhao Yin would still be no match for the Old Witch.
Zhao Min stood over Wen Yan but his gaze was fixed solely on Zhao Yin. The look in his eyes was filled with deep affection—here was a ghost displaying such emotion!
Zhao Yin froze and called out, "Brother!"
"Roar!"
Zhao Min suddenly howled, clutching his chest as his expression twisted in agony. He struggled desperately, as if trying to break free from something.
A flash of insight struck me; earlier when I attempted to stab Zhao Min, Zhao Yin had stopped my Peach Wood Sword with her hand. At that moment, her blood and tears had fallen onto Zhao Min's chest. I hadn’t thought much of it then, but now it seemed that Zhao Yin's tears and blood had awakened a flicker of consciousness within Zhao Min!
"Brother!" Zhao Yin called out again.
"Aw..."
Zhao Min leaped up from the grave with incredible speed, breaking through layers of Vengeful Spirits in an instant and landing beside the Old Witch. In one swift motion, he embraced her tightly.
"Let go of me!"
The Old Witch never expected Zhao Min to embrace her. She did not pull away; instead, she screamed and suddenly opened her mouth wide, almost as large as her own face, blood gushing forth and dripping from her teeth.
"Let go of me!" the Old Witch shouted, biting down on Zhao Min's head. With a crunch, she bit off half of Zhao Min's skull.
Yet Zhao Min still did not release his grip. He held onto the Old Witch tightly, his strength immense, leaving the Old Witch unable to break free. His remaining eye was fixed on Zhao Yin's direction, filled with deep affection and unwavering determination.
At that moment, the Vengeful Spirits relaxed their assault on me.
Without hesitation, I swung my Peach Wood Sword and charged forward. I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; there would be no second chance because the Old Witch was far too powerful! Her gaping maw resembled that of a demon.
With a swift thrust, my Peach Wood Sword pierced directly into the Old Witch's chest.
The Old Witch roared in anger, her mouth opening wide as dark energy surged toward me.
I ignored her and shook my bag, pulling out a packet of dark substances that I scattered over the Old Witch. It contained Cinnabar, White Phosphorus, Glutinous Rice, and gasoline—essentially my homemade concoction for burning corpses.
I lit a lighter and tossed it onto the Old Witch.
With a loud explosion, the Old Witch ignited violently.
Holding the Fire Thunder Talisman in my hand, I stood by. If these materials did not kill the Old Witch, I would have to resort to using the Talisman, even though it would cost me ten thousand dollars; however, life was more important.
Soon, flames raged fiercely, engulfing both the Old Witch and Zhao Min in an instant. The fire itself had a strong restraining power against these spirits; it was no wonder they enforced cremation now.
Zhao Min's gaze remained fixed on Zhao Yin throughout. He never loosened his arms; he used his body to hold the Old Witch in place and perished alongside her in the flames.
The surrounding Vengeful Spirits had never harbored any Resentment toward us. With the death of the Old Witch, they ceased their attacks on me and began to dissipate into wisps of black mist that floated away. I was taken aback as I realized that they were not true Vengeful Spirits; genuine Vengeful Spirits held Resentment in their hearts. These beings were cursed by Taoism—those who had died without even qualifying to become ghosts. With the Old Witch gone, they could no longer reside within her ghostly tumor and thus could not linger in this world any longer.
"Ha..."
A fierce wind swept through, and the empty black clouds dissipated in an instant. On the ground, the two charred corpses were blown away by the gust, almost leaving nothing behind.
Wen Yan stood at the bottom of the pit, clutching his chest; Zhao Min's kick had been quite heavy. Meanwhile, Zhao Yin knelt beside the coffin, wiping her tears. The last scene replayed in her mind—Zhao Min had thrown herself to embrace the Old Witch, leaving Zhao Yin in tears.
Wen Yan climbed up, coughed a few times, and sighed, "Well, I’ve seen a lot today. But this mission is considered complete; we’ve earned our reward."
Fourth Uncle and the others also climbed up. I helped Zhao Yin to her feet, and together we covered the grave.
From a distance, Shanshui Village appeared exceptionally desolate and withered, shrouded in darkness that gave off an ominous feeling.
Fourth Uncle sighed, "Forget it. Rather than returning to that village, we might as well go with you to the East Sea City Public Security Bureau and confess. That village is far scarier than the police station."
That night, we had a hearty meal together. Although there wasn't much in terms of dishes, after facing life and death, food hardly mattered; what was most important was that we could sit together and drink while still alive!
