I walked into the police station lobby with Liu Yiyi. The place was chaotic and bustling, with several leaders standing in the corner, their expressions serious as they spoke.
I glanced around, a bit confused. "It's just a death, right? Why all this fuss? If we didn't know Chen Team, we probably wouldn't even get to see Zhou Ruyun."
Liu Yiyi chuckled lightly. She was wearing high heels that almost made her taller than me. "What do you know? This is a critical time. Recently, the inspection team has been in Jiangsu, so everyone in the government is on edge. Just half a month ago, ten officials died one after another. Some fell while cleaning windows, others collapsed while strolling in parks, some were in meetings in the morning and jumped into rivers by afternoon, and there were even those who died from falling when they opened windows because they couldn't handle the air conditioning. I paused for a moment and turned to Liu Yiyi. "But that seems extreme. Even if he did something wrong, he could just confess. It's not like he's going to get shot; it's just a few years in prison. The conditions for these officials aren't that bad."
Liu Yiyi shook her head and sighed. "Ah, these matters are beyond our understanding. There are so many complicated interests at play. Who knows if it was suicide out of fear of punishment or if he was assassinated? Or maybe he had evidence against someone and got killed for it? In any case, it's really dangerous out there; life is far more exciting than what you see on TV."
I nodded, realizing that while death might be normal, the current situation was anything but ordinary. The series of recent suicides among officials had made things difficult for the disciplinary inspectors, and now with Liao Gang's sudden death, the Donghai City government was very concerned about the case's progress—they came directly to the police station.
Afterward, Liu Yiyi and I went to a large eatery. It was quite warm inside when we entered, and Liu Yiyi took off her jacket before sitting down.
"Clang!"
A pair of chopsticks fell from the table next to us.
I looked over to see a young man bending down to pick them up.
I couldn't help but laugh and turned to Liu Yiyi. "I've heard of beauty that can topple cities, but today I've witnessed beauty that can topple chopsticks!"
Liu Yiyi's face turned slightly red as she shot me a glare. "Stop talking nonsense! I don't think I'm that charming."
I looked at Liu Yiyi and nodded seriously. "You are charming; that floral dress looks great on you."
"What are you staring at?" Liu Yiyi quickly placed both hands on the table to block my view of her chest.
I chuckled softly.
The food stall was quite average, but it was an old establishment. The old noodle shop in Donghai City served delicious duck blood vermicelli soup, and the prices were reasonable.
We ordered a serving of duck blood vermicelli and a few other dishes. While we were eating, Liu Yiyi asked, "Song Fei, how do you plan to investigate? When will you be able to get Zhou Ruyun out?"
I shook my head. "I can't be sure yet. The main thing is that I need to find out the reason behind her sudden act of violence. If I can't find that reason, I won't be able to release her. I think we need to take a long-term approach."
"How do we take a long-term approach?" Liu Yiyi had eaten more than half of her bowl and seemed to have no thoughts of dieting. It was strange how she managed to maintain her figure so well.
I replied, "We should let her go and see if she has another episode. Also, I have a feeling that her killings are not random; they are purposeful. You heard in the interrogation room that she had looked up information before—she came across Liao Gang's data. Although she didn't seem to care at the time, she ended up killing him. After all these years, she chose this moment to act only after reviewing Liao Gang's information. This indicates that there must be some reason behind her actions. So, I believe there are other targets involved!"
Liu Yiyi pondered for a moment. "Are you suggesting we continue showing her various materials?"
I nodded. "It would be best to start with information about people close to Liao Gang. We can experiment with this approach; I think the most important thing is to make Zhou Ruyun reveal herself again as soon as possible."
Liu Yiyi agreed with a sound.
After finishing the duck blood vermicelli, Liu Yiyi wiped her mouth and sighed, "That was delicious! Much better than our company's work meals."
"You don't worry about gaining weight?" I stood up.
Liu Yiyi pouted. "Eating work meals every day, I've almost lost five pounds."
As we walked out, I called Qin Hai. Liu Yiyi had to go back to work, so she left first. I got off at the police station and found Qin Hai inside.
Qin Hai had gained some weight recently; his face looked a bit rounder. When he saw me, he muttered, "Song Fei, do you know I'm currently dating someone? I was supposed to have today off, but the captain called me in to assist you with your work. You're really annoying!"
I wrapped my arms around Qin Hai's neck. "Come on, who have you harmed this time?"
Qin Hai pried my hands away. "I'm just here to spread warmth. As for you, Song Fei, the girl I'm seeing is really great. Aside from being a bit proud, she's perfect in every way. You and I..."
"Qin Hai!"
Before Qin Hai could finish, a spoiled woman's voice rang out from a distance.
I turned to look in the direction of the voice and saw a girl who looked about nineteen or twenty approaching us. She was wearing high heels and a Korean-style long shirt, carrying a bag. It was clear she was an unreliable rich girl. However, she was indeed quite beautiful, with slender legs and a good figure.
The woman walked over to us.
Seeing me holding onto Qin Hai's neck, she pointed at me with her finger, then pulled my arm away and hit me with her bag. "You dead glass! Who told you to steal my boyfriend? Who told you to steal my boyfriend, you jerk! How could he suddenly cancel our date to come here and meet you? You dead gay man!"
I was stunned; I had never encountered such a foolish woman before.
I looked at Qin Hai. "Hai Ge, how could such a wise man like you end up with this woman?"
Upon hearing this, Qin Hai turned pale and immediately pushed me away while signaling for me to shut up.
I had no choice but to fall silent.
The woman, hearing my words, became even more agitated and raised her bag again to hit me.
After explaining for quite some time, she finally huffed and swayed her hips as she left.
I looked at Qin Hai in disbelief. "Is this really the girl you chose?"
Qin Hai chuckled lightly, "Well, even though she has a bit of a fiery temper, she's really quite beautiful, isn't she? And do you know what her father does? He's an officer, a high-ranking official in the military district."
I kicked Qin Hai playfully in the rear. "I didn't realize you were so superficial."
Qin Hai looked at me disdainfully. "What do you know? This isn't about being superficial; I genuinely think she's not bad. Come on, let's get down to business. After we finish this case, I need to take a few more days off to try and win her over. I'm already twenty-five, and my mom is practically pushing me to get married."
"So you chose such a proud woman to bring home? That’s bound to drive your mom crazy," I replied.
Qin Hai merely scoffed.
As we chatted, Qin Hai and I entered the police station. Our plan was quite simple: we needed to show Zhou Ruyun some information about certain individuals, specifically those connected to Liao Gang—his family, colleagues, former classmates, and his old superiors and subordinates. We aimed to gather as comprehensive information as possible and then present it to Zhou Ruyun.
I had to admit that Qin Hai was skilled in this area; he quickly found a lot of data and compiled it onto a tablet.
I took the tablet and walked into the detention center, where I saw Zhou Ruyun again.
Zhou Ruyun had not yet been convicted, so she was being held in a temporary jail. Due to her special circumstances, Chen Shan arranged for her to have a single cell, fearing she might harm others at night.
I entered and handed the tablet to Zhou Ruyun without providing any explanation. I simply told her, "Zhou Ruyun, please go through the information on this tablet."
Zhou Ruyun nodded. She was quiet and obedient; no wonder Liu Yiyi liked her so much. Upon hearing of her arrest, Liu Yiyi immediately came looking for me at the café.
Zhou Ruyun looked at the information on the tablet. Although she didn’t understand the reason behind it, she clicked through each item one by one. After finishing, she looked at me and said, "I've finished reading."
"Do you recognize anyone?" I asked.
Zhou Ruyun shook her head.
I brought over the tablet and said, "Alright, you can rest here for now. Don't worry, trust me. As long as you are innocent, Liu Yiyi and I will definitely set you free."
"Thank you," Zhou Ruyun said, lowering her head. "Um, Mr. Song, if something really happens to me... please make sure to tell Liu Zong. Don't let my family know. And I hope Liu Zong can have some pity on me and send more money to my hometown because my family is relying on me to earn money for my two younger brothers to get married."
Hearing this made my nose feel a bit sour. "Don't worry about that," I reassured her. "You don't need to think about these things."
I walked out with the tablet.
Later that evening, during dinner, I pulled Qin Hai aside and whispered, "Don't lock Zhou Ruyun's door later."
"Huh?" Qin Hai was startled. "What if she runs away?"
I sighed and replied, "I really have no choice this time. It's nighttime now, and I've observed Zhou Ruyun; she hasn't shown any signs of abnormal behavior. At least there are no Vengeful Spirits around her right now. I suspect that if there are any Vengeful Spirits, they are deeply hidden within Zhou Ruyun. The only way to deal with them is to let them come out so I can find a way to eliminate those Vengeful Spirits."
Qin Hai nodded. "Alright, I'll listen to you then. After all, you are the master."
