I ran towards the Mountain with Wang Yan, circling around a hill until we reached a river. To my surprise, the three boys jumped straight into the water and started running toward the middle of the river. The water wasn't very deep, but it still reached their waists.
I hesitated, feeling scared at the thought of getting in at this late hour. "Wang Yan, you wait here. I'll go after them myself."
Wang Yan shook her head. Although her teeth had stopped chattering, she still clung to my arm, saying, "No, no! I can't stand here alone."
I couldn't worry about her anymore. Gripping my Peach Wood Sword, I waded into the river.
The three boys had made their way to a large tree in the middle of the river and then disappeared.
I pulled out my Powerful Flashlight from my backpack and shone it across the water's surface as I ran toward the tree.
This tree was at least a hundred years old; its bark was completely hollowed out. At that moment, I saw the three boys crouched inside the hollow trunk.
I aimed my flashlight inside.
"Ah!" Wang Yan screamed, pointing at the center of the tree. "A ghost! A ghost!"
My flashlight froze on a face—a woman's face. Her hair was disheveled, and her complexion was deathly pale. Even more bizarrely, her body seemed to have merged with the dry tree; her limbs were entangled in its branches and vines. Perhaps due to the passage of time, those branches had grown into her flesh, binding her so tightly that she couldn't escape.
I stared at the woman as she gazed back at me. In a chilling voice, she said, "I hate light. Turn it off!"
I replied, "So you must be the woman who died twenty years ago, right?"
"Twenty Years Ago... Twenty Years Ago..." Yes, I am the woman who died twenty years ago. Child, do not meddle! I must take my revenge! I will kill those three beasts, and then I will bury this entire village with me!" The female corpse shouted fiercely, and as she grew angry, the entire withered tree shook.
I took a step back; it was as if a thousand-year-old tree demon had come to life. "What exactly happened twenty years ago that made you so furious? You still haven't forgotten your vengeance after all this time."
"What happened?" The female corpse hissed ominously. "Just like tonight, you saw it yourself. We four came here for an outing, and then those three beasts raped me and killed me! They sneaked away, and these despicable villagers, upon discovering my body, not only failed to call the police or bury me but even used my blood to make Blood Buns! Heh heh, let them do it. I will plant the seeds of revenge in their bodies. Once I find those three beasts, they will become my tools! My tools for vengeance!"
I sighed; this confirmed my suspicions. "Indeed, twenty years ago, Liao Gang, Shen Shaohua, you and another man were here for an outing when they killed you. Your resentment lingered on, turning you into a Vengeful Spirit seeking revenge. But back then, you were too weak to break free from this tree's grasp, so you used those four children..."
"Get away!" The woman suddenly began to scream and thrash about, causing the entire tree to shake. Although she was powerful, she couldn't escape its hold.
I touched my Peach Wood Sword and stepped forward, gathering my courage. "The hatred has lasted for twenty years; it's not worth lingering over. Let go of that hatred, and perhaps you can be reborn as a human. Hurry and leave!"
"That's impossible!" The female Vengeful Spirit suddenly burst into laughter, shaking the whole tree as she did so. "Child, you wouldn't understand; you know nothing! Although I've been bound by this tree for twenty years, it has also granted me benefits. It has made me fearless of thunder and lightning and given me an endless lifespan! You won't understand my plight; get lost! If you don't leave now, I will kill those three and make them die before your eyes!"
The three boys suddenly screamed in agony, rolling their eyes as they struggled against one another. Then they huddled together and began to bite at each other. Seeing this made me realize that the woman was indeed capable of such cruelty; if they continued tearing at each other like that, they could all end up dead.
"Alright, alright! I'll leave, but please don't harm them; they're just innocent young men. I'm going now."
I pulled Wang Yan toward the shore while thinking of a plan. It was nighttime now; there was no way I could subdue this female corpse. Even if I could defeat her and burn her, those three students would likely perish in the process. However, during the day, based on what had happened before, this female corpse's resentment was deep enough to control people's minds through it. But during daylight hours, resentment would lose its power; those three should return to normal then. This Vengeful Spirit could only control people through sleepwalking at night.
I resolved to return to this tree first thing in the morning to rescue those three college students since the female corpse was trapped in the tree and couldn't move at all.
Once on shore, I shrugged; my clothes were wet and cold. "Are you alright? Let's find some dry clothes to change into."
Wang Yan nodded, her teeth chattering uncontrollably. "There... there really are ghosts; it's terrifying... so terrifying."
I know that for those who encounter these things for the first time, fear is inevitable; it's a miracle if they don't go insane. I felt the same way myself. Mainly, things like ghosts, referred to as Vengeful Spirits, are indeed taboo in China. This might be related to the Cultural Revolution when the focus was on destroying the "Four Olds" and eliminating feudal superstitions. However, in reality, some things truly exist.
The commonly held beliefs are not necessarily the truth.
Ghosts are one such example; those who know about them keep it hidden, while the vast majority believe that ghosts are mere feudal superstitions, unaware that these entities exist right beside us, truly and undeniably.
Wang Yan was still trembling, gripping my arm tightly and refusing to let go for even a moment.
I sighed and pinched Wang Yan's nose. "It's okay now; there's nothing to worry about."
We walked toward the village, and Wang Yan said, "That car we came in was a Volkswagen SUV. It had our clothes in it; let's go change first."
Sounds good.
I remembered that the car was parked at the entrance of the village, so we headed toward it. As we approached the vehicle, I heard some noises around us.
I paused for a moment and looked around; it seemed there were no ghosts.
Tap tap tap...
At that moment, someone walked over from across the street.
When I saw it was just a person and not a ghost, I didn't think much of it. This was Shuidong Village; it was normal for someone to be around. Wang Yan and I continued walking forward.
"Smack!"
Suddenly, a blinding light shot towards us; it was a Powerful Flashlight, the kind that concentrated its beam and had more power than a car's headlights.
In an instant, the brightness hit my eyes, and I was plunged into darkness. I shouted, "What the hell! Turn off the light! Don’t you know this can blind someone? It’s so unethical!"
"Bang!"
A muffled sound came from the back of my head. My mind spun, and then I collapsed to the ground. As I fell, I cursed inwardly, "Damn it, a brick!"

I don't know how much time passed before I opened my eyes. My head throbbed painfully. What the hell happened? I had been knocked out by someone with a brick—was it... Chainsaw Man?!

I had been set up; it was so embarrassing. I needed to learn to be more cautious in the future. Thinking back, that person had flashed the bright light in my eyes just to knock me out.
Regret filled my mind as my eyes began to adjust to the surroundings. It was somewhat dark outside, but the moonlight was bright; it was still night, so it seemed I hadn’t been unconscious for too long.
I felt my body swaying and bumping around. My hand moved slightly; it felt soft against something. Slowly, I sat up and moved my hand again, puzzled about what I was touching—it felt surprisingly nice.
As I got up and looked down, I realized my hand was resting on Wang Yan's chest. Her shirt was half-open, and my hand lay on the bulging part of her ragged tank top.
I froze for a moment before quickly withdrawing my hand. This wasn’t the time for taking advantage of such situations. I hurriedly looked around and discovered that we were in a cage. The cage was moving. Looking closer, I finally understood: this was the back of an off-road vehicle. But it had been modified into a cage-like structure, similar to a police van—there was a driver's cabin in front and a cage in the back!
"What’s going on?" Anger surged within me as I scrambled to my feet and shook the cage. Then I shouted towards the front, "Hey! Hey! Is there some kind of mistake? Who are you? Why did you capture us?!"
I was really a bit confused about the situation. Here I was in Yancheng, and I hadn't offended anyone, so why had someone hit me with a brick? Was it an attempted robbery? That didn't make sense; Wang Yan was far more attractive than I was. The key point was that Wang Yan hadn’t been robbed either; she was still lying next to me.
I sat up and glanced at Wang Yan, who was still in a deep sleep. She was wearing a watch. I picked up her watch to check the time; it was just past midnight, so it seemed I hadn't been unconscious for too long.
I rubbed my head, feeling a small bump at the back. It wasn't serious. I got up again to check Wang Yan's head, but she had long hair, so I couldn't feel any bumps on her.
"What are you doing?" Wang Yan suddenly spoke up.
I looked over; she was awake. I helped her sit up and said, "It's nothing, just checking your injuries. You're okay, right?"
Wang Yan shook her head slightly. "I just feel a bit dizzy. Who hit us? Where are we?"
