Gravekeeper
Yue Wenshan took a drag from his cigarette and tossed it into the campfire. "A few days ago, I saw on the news that Liao Gang was dead. At that moment, I thought it was likely related to that incident from twenty years ago. So, I returned to Donghai City to gather information. I managed to buy some intel about Blood Bun from an insider at the police station and rushed here ahead of everyone else to capture the four people who had eaten Blood Bun back then. Oh, and of course, you too. As for this beautiful lady, she must have been dragged into this because of you."
"You really are ruthless," I replied. "But even if you kill us, it won't matter. That female corpse is still out there; she won't let you go."
"A female corpse? I've killed hundreds in my lifetime; I'm not afraid of such things. I have two masters in my car, and a third old Taoist will be arriving soon. Once we find the female corpse and eliminate her, I'll be safe again. And you, Mr. Song," he laughed heartily.
I felt a chill run down my spine. Encountering such a psychopath left me feeling helpless. Was I really going to die in a place like this? To be honest, if I died here, my ashes scattered, the police would find no evidence.
Just then, distant barking suddenly broke the silence, followed by the sound of footsteps approaching.
I froze for a moment and quickly turned around. Three barefoot boys were sprinting toward us; they were Wang Yan's classmates—the three students controlled by the female corpse.
They must have been drawn by the sound of the car. Upon seeing Yue Wenshan, they charged at him like madmen, their eyes wide with fear as they clawed at the air with their hands.
"Possessed by Resentment! Boss Yue!" An old Taoist jumped down from an off-road vehicle. He was dressed in traditional Taoist robes and held my Peach Wood Sword in his hand.
I was furious at once—what was he doing stealing my tools? Couldn’t this old Taoist afford his own Peach Wood Sword?
The three boys were under Wang Xue's Resentment control. Recognizing Yue Wenshan, they completely ignored everyone else and lunged at him.
Yue Wenshan was startled and tried to back away. The old Taoist waved my Peach Wood Sword a couple of times but seemed to think it wasn’t effective enough. He tossed it aside and pulled out another Peach Wood Sword from his pants pocket. With a flick of his fingers, he commanded, "Hurry as per the law; sword slay evil spirits; swiftly!"
This old Taoist had some skills; under his command, the Peach Wood Sword actually flew up into the air and aimed directly at the boy running in front.
However, he forgot one crucial detail: although this student was possessed by a vengeful spirit, it wasn't that a ghost had taken over his body; rather, his mind was influenced by Resentment.
The Peach Wood Sword struck the boy but did nothing to dispel the Resentment within him. The boy simply reached out and with a thud knocked the Peach Wood Sword down to the ground.
"Not good!" The Old Taoist exclaimed, startled. He turned to Yue Wenshan behind him. "Mr. Yue, the Resentment is too powerful. It can manipulate people's minds; it's not just infected by Resentment. I can't hold it back for now; we need someone to bind it."
Upon hearing this, Yue Wenshan replied, "That's easy!" He raised his gun and fired at the boy.
With a loud bang, blood gushed forth as the bullet struck the boy's leg. He stumbled and fell to the ground. Seeing that this tactic was effective, Yue Wenshan felt relieved and let out a cold laugh. "What a load of nonsense, Vengeful Spirit! What Wang Xue? Is that all you've got? Come on, bring it on... bang bang!"
Yue Wenshan shouted loudly, firing at the other two boys as well. One bullet hit a boy in the stomach; blood flowed from his wound, yet he still lunged toward Yue Wenshan.
"Thump thump thump..."
Yue Wenshan went wild, shooting relentlessly at the boy.
We were all terrified, especially Wang Yan beside me, who screamed in fright. Although those three boys intended to assault her, they were still classmates. Seeing her classmates fall so brutally was enough to keep her from fainting.
I was anxious; I understood very well that Yue Wenshan had lost his mind. He could kill one person in a frenzy or take down all three of them—and he could easily turn on us too! For a madman, killing one person is no different from killing a group.
I knew I couldn't hesitate any longer; I couldn't just sit back and wait for my fate. Without thinking much, I leaned back and moved toward the campfire. I placed my arms over the flames to roast them!
The rope binding me was made of hemp—strong enough that even a dagger would struggle to cut through it. However, hemp burns easily, at least more so than human skin. At this moment, I was desperate; I couldn't care less about burning my hands as I pressed my arms against the campfire.
The flames seared my wrist painfully, igniting a fire within my heart as well. I had to keep moving my wrist to avoid severe burns. With my hands tied behind me, I couldn't see how the rope was faring; I could only continue to burn it. Though it felt like my skin was cooking, I couldn't stop.
I gritted my teeth and persevered.
At that moment, all three boys lay on the ground, blood pooling around them.
Yue Wenshan blew on the muzzle of his gun and sneered disdainfully. "So this is all you can do? I thought you were something special."
"Roar!"
The two people sitting across from me were the same two kids who had eaten the Blood Bun. Back then, there were four children who had consumed the Blood Bun. Besides Zhou Ruyun and Ding Dong, there were two others who had also eaten it. They had originally been sitting with us, but suddenly, they went mad. They jumped up wildly, hands behind their backs, and ran straight towards Yue Wenshan.
The Resentment within them was now fully awakened.
At the same time, the sky suddenly turned completely dark.
I looked up and saw a massive dark cloud blocking the moon, surrounding us in pitch blackness. A chilling wind suddenly swept through.
The hairs on my back stood on end, and cold sweat poured out of me. I suddenly thought of Wang Xue, remembering how she had been trapped in that tree for over twenty years, her Resentment never dissipating as she soaked in that filthy water year after year! Her Resentment must be immense!
Moreover, Wang Xue had once said that although the tree prevented her from moving, it also brought her many benefits! At that time, I didn’t understand what those benefits were, but now I seemed to grasp a bit of it.
That is to say, Wang Xue's Resentment could almost float away with the wind! Her Resentment fell with the swaying of the tree and spread with the passing chill; she was a devil in this area!
My fear intensified; I absolutely could not stay here any longer! Not just because of the murderous Yue Wenshan, but even this sinister Resentment was extremely dangerous.
I gritted my teeth, ignoring the pain, and thrust my hand into the center of the flames, holding it there relentlessly.
It hurt! It hurt a lot! But I didn’t pull away!
Just when I began to smell my own skin burning, suddenly my arm relaxed—the rope binding me finally burned through!
I didn’t have time to think further; I quickly untied the rope and stood up in one swift motion.
"Thump Thump Thump"…
Yue Wenshan fired at the two people who had eaten the Blood Bun. The gunshots rang out, and both of them fell dead on the spot.
Holding the gun, Yue Wenshan looked at me and laughed, "Wow, you're ruthless. You have my old flair, but you don't have my luck!" He began to walk toward me, gun in hand, ready to shoot.
I glanced at the pistol in Yue Wenshan's hand—a standard police Type 54 pistol, which should hold eight rounds. He had already fired eight shots.
Ignoring him, I turned and ran toward my backpack.
Yue Wenshan sneered and shot at me while saying, "You really overestimate yourself... click!"
The Type 54 pistol clicked empty.
At that moment, I reached the side of the SUV and quickly pulled out my backpack. Immediately, I retrieved my Glock Pistol from inside.
I raised the handgun and fired a shot into the air. The loud bang startled the thugs around me!
"Get the hell away!" I shouted, pointing the gun at them.
The men stepped back, some even began to turn around, likely heading back to their vehicle to grab their weapons.
I wasn't going to wait for them. I opened the driver's side door of the SUV and saw that the keys were still in the ignition. Relieved, I jumped in and started the engine immediately.
Just then, a cold wind blew through, followed by a chorus of croaking toads.
I shivered as I spotted my Peach Wood Sword lying on the ground not far away. I jumped out of the car, grabbed my Peach Wood Sword, and then hopped back into the vehicle to start it up.
"What are you standing there for? Stop him!" Yue Wenshan shouted angrily. "Are you waiting for him to escape and report me to the police?"
I glanced at Yue Wenshan and let out a cold laugh. "You won't be able to escape tonight, no need for me to report you."
As soon as I finished speaking, a chorus of croaking sounds erupted, and countless toads began hopping toward Yue Wenshan from the darkness.
"What the hell is this!"
"Where did all these toads come from?"
"What is going on?"
The big men finally remembered the toads on the ground and started kicking at them, but the toads seemed crazed, leaping toward Yue Wenshan and his group.
I pressed down on the accelerator, and the off-road vehicle surged toward the campfire. I shouted loudly to Wang Yan, Zhou Ruyun, and Ding Dong, who were by the campfire, "What are you sitting there for? Get in the car now!"
The three of them were frozen in fear, especially when they saw a swarm of toads jumping toward the fire. Zhou Ruyun and Wang Yan were nearly panicking. Hearing my shout, they quickly ran over to the car.
