I jumped out of the car and pulled open the back door. The three of them jumped in, their hands still bound, but their feet were free, allowing them to climb aboard without any trouble.
Once inside, I quickly closed the door and rolled up the window before locking it securely.
"Thump Thump Thump!"
A few gunshots rang out, hitting the back of the car and the tires.
One tire suddenly deflated with a loud pop.
But I didn’t care; I could feel the Ghostly Energy intensifying. I pressed the clutch, shifted gears, and then slammed on the gas. With a roar, we sped out into the open.
The headlights illuminated the scene ahead, revealing hundreds of villagers from Shuidong Village rushing toward us. They looked deranged, their eyes rolled back, fingers mimicking digging motions as they charged at us like zombies.
"Ah!" Wang Yan screamed as she caught sight of the villagers ahead.
"Bang!"
One person suddenly leaped onto my car and slammed into the windshield with his head. The impact cracked the windshield of the SUV!
Startled, I accelerated sharply and then hit the brakes hard. The man was thrown off and landed beneath the vehicle.
More people surged forward, reaching for my car, but an even larger crowd lunged toward Yue Wenshan.
I watched in fear, realizing that at this moment, these people had lost all sense of reason. I couldn't care less about human lives; I slammed the headlights off and pressed the accelerator, charging forward!
I crashed into several people ahead, their bodies thumping against my vehicle. The toad on the ground let out a pitiful scream as it was crushed beneath the tires. I bit my lip and pushed forward with all my might. I had a gut feeling that I needed to escape this village, to break free from this area shrouded in dark clouds if I wanted to survive.
I never expected Wang Xue to be so powerful! Stronger than I could have imagined. I didn't doubt for a second that her strength surpassed that of the Water Ghost Child! Even Yang Gou Dan might struggle against her here, let alone me, a novice.
In the back seat, Wang Yan was crying uncontrollably, while Zhou Ruyun seemed much calmer. She had likely been through similar situations before and didn't seem too fazed; instead, she was comforting Wang Yan.
Driving along that road, I decided not to turn on the lights and barreled straight ahead.
"Xin!" Zhou Ruyun suddenly shouted, pointing ahead. "That's my father! Xin! Don't hit him!"
I looked ahead into the darkness; it did seem like there was a figure, but it also felt like an illusion. Just as I hesitated about whether to stop, Zhou Ruyun went wild in the car. She stood up and lunged toward my seat, shouting, "Stop the car! That's my dad! You'll kill him! Hurry!"
Just as I was about to hit the brakes, Zhou Ruyun's frantic behavior made me realize—there was no figure ahead; it was empty! Zhou Ruyun had been deceived by a ghost! Thankfully, her hands were still tied; if they weren't, she would have surely strangled me right then and there. At that moment, I wouldn't have been able to drive, and we might never escape Shuidong Village!
"Ding Dong, hold her down! We’re only five hundred meters away; just hang on!" I shouted as I accelerated even faster!
Ding Dong responded affirmatively and struggled to keep Zhou Ruyun in her seat. The SUV roared with power and finally burst out of Shuidong Village.
Moonlight poured down, and I immediately felt warmth wash over me. The scenery outside became clear again, no longer shrouded in darkness.
I pressed the brakes and shifted gears; the vehicle came to a halt.
Looking in the rearview mirror at what lay behind us, I saw nothing but darkness—a place covered by ominous clouds that resembled a black vortex ready to swallow everything within it.
I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead and thought, "So this woman’s resentment is so great! How terrifying!"
At that moment, I felt a sharp pain in my wrist. Looking down, I saw that my wrists were already a bloody mess. I had just wiped the sweat with my hands, and the irritation from the moisture made it hurt even more.
As I finished speaking, there was silence in the off-road vehicle, broken only by the heavy breathing of a few people.
After a while, Zhou Ruyun finally calmed down and spoke, "Officer Song, what should we do now?"
"Wait." I turned off the engine and parked at the entrance of the village. Turning around to look at the thick dark clouds behind us sent a chill down my spine. A woman had been brutally raped and then turned into a Blood Bun by the villagers. She had been soaked in filthy water and entangled by branches, enduring the pain of them invading her body. All these experiences had filled Wang Xue with immense resentment, which explained her current formidable power.
I took a deep breath, opened the car window, and surprisingly found a pack of cigarettes inside.
I lit one up and took a few puffs, only to start coughing violently. I quickly extinguished the cigarette and said, "It's okay now; we've escaped. Tomorrow morning, we’ll burn that female corpse. Although she is powerful, she is still bound by that tree. As long as the tree cannot move, neither can she."
Wang Yan started crying after hearing me. Seeing her able to cry eased my worries; I was afraid of those who couldn't express their emotions and would end up going mad from bottling everything inside.
After crying for a while, Wang Yan fell asleep. Zhou Ruyun and Ding Dong were also tired, resting in their seats.
I pushed open the car door and stepped out, gazing at the dark clouds looming over the village.
The empty black clouds began to dissipate, and a chilling wind picked up. I lit another cigarette but didn’t smoke it; instead, I offered a silent tribute towards the direction of those dark clouds. This time, who knows how many people would die? Regardless of how many would perish, Yue Wenshan was doomed.
Wang Xue had lost many things but had simultaneously become incredibly powerful. Though bound by the tree and unable to move her body, she could still summon winds and clouds while spreading her resentment—truly formidable.
I planted the cigarette butt into the ground and resolved that if it was clear tomorrow, I would definitely deal with Wang Xue no matter what.
I got into the car and closed the door, leaving a small gap in the window. Then I leaned back in my seat and dozed off.
In a daze, I thought I heard cries in the distance. Startled, I opened my eyes wide and checked the time; it was just past three in the morning. I looked back, and Shuidong Village had returned to normal. The moon was bright, with no clouds or strong winds, though occasional cries drifted from the village.
I didn't dare to enter the village. Instead, I chose to call the police. Although the emergency line was open twenty-four hours, the police wouldn't respond at all hours. I reported my name and identity, asking them to send officers to Shuidong Village early the next morning.
After making the call, I leaned back in my seat and fell asleep again.
In my half-sleep, something was touching my face. Thinking it was an insect, I reached out to swat it away. As soon as I did, I felt something warm and smooth. I froze for a moment, then opened my eyes to find my hand resting on Wang Yan's face.
Wang Yan was gently tracing my face with her fingers. Seeing that I was awake, she whispered, "Handsome, can you come outside with me for a moment?"
"Huh?" I glanced around, starting to understand but still confused.
Wang Yan moved my hand away and touched her face. "Considering you just touched me earlier, please come out with me. I really can't hold it anymore."
"What do you mean?" I asked, puzzled. "Don't say things randomly; I only touched your face."
Wang Yan whispered, "I need to relieve myself. I'm too scared to go alone."
I understood now. Stretching lazily, I made my way out of the car.
On either side of the road were patches of grass. Wang Yan asked me to stand by the roadside and turn away from her. She probably didn't want to go far. Before long, I heard water splashing nearby, and shortly after, Wang Yan returned with a sigh of relief, her face flushed. "It was just dew."
I chuckled lightly and said nothing more.
As dawn approached, I stretched lazily and sighed, "Today is definitely going to be busy."
Finally, the sun rose, and all the shadows of resentment were laid bare under its light. I walked back into Shuidong Village, where the villagers had risen early. Soon, the entire village was filled with a cacophony of voices.
"How did I get hurt?"
"Where is my husband?"
"Ah, why is there blood all over my hands?"
It seemed these villagers were still unaware of their frantic rush out last night, like zombies.
Zhou Ruyun and I entered her home, where her parents were no exception; they were staring at each other in disbelief.
"Dad, Mom!" Zhou Ruyun called out.
"Daughter, you’re finally here! Look at what happened! When I went to bed last night, my head was fine, but when I woke up this morning, my head was bleeding all over my face! It must be your father who took revenge on me while I was asleep; he tried to kill me! Now that I question him, he won’t admit it," Zhou Ruyun's mother exclaimed loudly.
Of course, Zhou Ruyun's father denied it. "You’re just slandering me! Look at my arm; it’s injured too! It’s swollen and might be broken! You must have hit me!"
"Nonsense! I was sleeping the whole time. The only thing I did was have a nightmare!"
"I only had a nightmare too..."
The two of them stared blankly for a moment, then looked at Zhou Ruyun. "Zhou Ruyun, is it... is it that female corpse that has come looking for us?"
Zhou Ruyun nodded. "It's okay, don't be afraid. Dad, Mom, it's all in the past..."
Not long after, a police car arrived. I drove the car, leading the police vehicle to the place where Zuo Yue Wen Shan had the incident. Only Wang Yan was with me; Zhou Ruyun and Ding Dong naturally returned to their own homes.
After I parked the car at the scene from yesterday, I noticed that the ground was covered in severed limbs and blood. I felt a bit nauseous, but I held it together and let Wang Yan stay in the car while I jumped out.
The few police officers on site were startled and immediately called the City Bureau. Before long, four police cars and more than ten detectives arrived.
