Gravekeeper
Liu Xin nodded and looked at Wang Chao.
Wang Chao had already taken out his phone. He made a call and then hung up. "Master Ming will definitely come, since we often collaborate. He doesn't really charge much; we're old friends, so it's easier this way."
I lowered my head to eat, choosing to ignore the radiant Wang Chao.
After dinner, Wang Chao drove us back to the Ancient Style Teahouse. It was already dark, and the workers were still digging through the night.
Wang Chao said, "Well, the teahouse should be closing soon. How about I give you a ride home? It's on the way anyway. Liu Yiyi, Sister Liu, what do you think?"
Liu Xin smiled and replied, "My driver will be here to pick me up soon, so no need to trouble you, Mr. Wang."
Wang Chao looked at Liu Yiyi with eager eyes.
Liu Yiyi said, "I'll take Song Fei's car back, Wang Chao. Thanks for everything."
Wang Chao seemed like he wanted to say more, but Liu Yiyi had already waved goodbye to him and then patted my head. "Why are you just standing there? Hurry up and open the car door for me."
I rolled my eyes at Liu Yiyi. "You're my sister!"
Liu Yiyi laughed.
I couldn't help but smile too.
The two of us got into Liu Yiyi's Jaguar. I drove first towards my coffee shop.
In the car, as Liu Yiyi fastened her seatbelt, she said, "You didn't perform well during dinner today. Are you feeling down?"
I said, "While you all are discussing financial stocks and listed companies, I can't even trade stocks, so of course I can only remain silent."
Liu Yiyi smiled, "Actually, I find it quite boring too."
"By the way, that car you drove earlier was mine. You really gave me some face; I owe you one," I replied.
Liu Yiyi laughed again, "If you want that car, I'll just give it to you."
I immediately declined; that car clearly looked like something a woman would drive—not at all imposing.
Liu Yiyi just chuckled and asked me to drop her off at her dormitory. Then I drove the Jaguar back to the café.
I agreed and drove Liu Yiyi to her company's dorm.
Once we arrived, Liu Yiyi opened the car door and waved goodbye, telling me not to bother seeing her off any further. She grabbed her bag and walked away.
As I watched Liu Yiyi leave, I felt a strange sensation in my heart. It seemed like Liu Yiyi had some feelings for me—something akin to mutual attraction. For instance, after Wang Chao arrived, Liu Yiyi clearly seemed worried that I might get jealous.
I sat in the car for a moment, then chuckled foolishly to myself. It seemed like there was a chance with Liu Xin!
When I returned to the café, I fell asleep.
Dreams flowed endlessly.
When a person is exhausted, they tend to dream more.
Although my body wasn't particularly tired today, my soul had traversed through the currents of time and space three times, with two of those being life-and-death adventures. I was truly worn out.
I woke up completely disoriented.
“Thump Thump Thump…”
“Thump Thump Thump…”
The sound of someone banging on the door continued relentlessly.
I opened my eyes and glanced at the time; it was just past eight in the morning.
“Thump Thump Thump…”
The knocking outside grew louder, as if someone was trying to break down my shop door.
Rubbing my eyes, I hurried to the door and opened it.
Standing there was a girl.
She was wearing sunglasses, a maxi dress, and sneakers, with big waves in her hair. To be honest, she looked pretty good at first glance.
However, I wasn’t particularly interested. I yawned and asked, “What do you want?”
“I’m here for the job interview,” she replied as she stepped inside.
“Oh.” It suddenly clicked; I had posted a job opening for my coffee shop online a few days ago, but no one had shown up until now. With school about to start, I really needed to hire a server.
“Do you have your resume?” I asked, feeling a bit more alert.
"Hey, Song Fei, can you wash your face and change your clothes before talking to me? You look like a thug in those shorts. Where am I supposed to look!" The woman exclaimed, coming up and tugging at my hair while continuing, "And wash your hair too. I don't like messy men."
"What?" I was completely awake now. I looked at this woman, thinking, what the hell! Was she here for an interview or was I? I was the boss here, yet she was lecturing me.
"Hurry up and change your clothes," the woman pushed me.
"Who do you think you are?" I glared at her. "I'm the boss here. What I do is none of your business." If it weren't for the fact that she had a stunning figure, I would have kicked her out already.
The woman tilted her head and then chuckled. She took off her sunglasses and said, "I'm here for the interview. That's giving you face; you definitely have to hire me, or you'll be missing out big time."
"Who are you... wait? You're that one person." As she removed her sunglasses, I realized I actually knew her. I had definitely seen her before but couldn't remember where. However, with someone this quirky, I should have been able to recall.
She scoffed, "With your terrible memory, you're going to get eaten by ghosts. Seriously."
I slapped my forehead as it suddenly clicked. "Oh! Zhang Yuru!"
Zhang Yuru sighed in relief. "Finally, you haven't forgotten about me."
I was a bit dumbfounded; wasn't she that clumsy intern police officer? We met while investigating Sister Wang's face mask case. What was she doing here?
Back then, Zhang Yuru had short hair and wore a police uniform. While she wasn't exactly beautiful, she looked pretty cool. Now that she had changed into a dress and let her hair down in big waves, I truly didn't recognize her.
Women really could change so much.
I remembered how silly Zhang Yuru used to be; now it seemed like she had become even more so. I laughed and said, "Zhang Yuru, what's with this outfit? Are you trying to go for the sexy policewoman look?"
"Forget about being a policewoman! Ugh, don't even mention it; I got fired by the captain!" Zhang Yuru plopped down on a table and crossed her legs. Honestly, she really didn't suit wearing skirts; crossing her legs revealed quite a bit underneath.
Zhang Yuru quickly adjusted her skirt.
I couldn't help but laugh. "Why are you acting so sweet with your captain? What does he want with you?"
"Isn't it because of my mom? Our captain had a crush on her when he was young but never succeeded. I graduated from the police academy and ended up interning under him. He’s been nitpicking at me ever since. I endured it because I wanted to get a permanent position. Then, a month ago, I messed up a case, and that jerk made me take the blame, giving me a disciplinary record. Now I'm not suited to be a detective anymore, and here I am, unemployed with this record. No other precinct wants me." Zhang Yuru pouted and cursed, "That damn captain! Thank goodness my mom didn’t agree to marry him back then; otherwise, I’d be in for a lifetime of suffering."
I chuckled. "I think that captain is actually looking out for you; he doesn’t want you to be a detective because he’s worried about your safety."
"What does my life have to do with him? Anyway, it doesn’t matter now since I’m not a cop anymore. I saw your café is hiring, so here I am! Hehe, I’m definitely the best candidate. First, we’ve been through thick and thin together; that’s life and death. Second, I'm skilled; my shooting is way better than yours. Third, well, I'm pretty and charming. So let’s just go with that; pay me the highest salary listed in the job posting." Zhang Yuru rambled on, making her own decision.
I was taken aback and quickly said, "Miss, this is a café! We need servers! What good is your shooting skill here? You should really look for something else. I can’t possibly hire you."
Ignoring me, Zhang Yuru wandered around my shop with her hands behind her back, mumbling, "Hey, Song Fei, where’s the bedroom in this place? Don’t think I’m sharing a room with you! The bathroom is okay though; I’m quite satisfied with it."
Seeing this made me anxious. Running this café wasn’t just for fun; I was counting on it to bring in three hundred thousand in profit each year to pursue Liu Yiyi. If Zhang Yuru became a server—though she was indeed pretty—it would be too risky. Who knows when she might get into an argument with a customer and wreck my shop?
I hurriedly said, "Hey, Officer Zhang Yuru, really, this job is just for a server; you're overqualified."
"It’s fine," Zhang Yuru nodded. "I like this kind of hidden-in-plain-sight feeling. I think we should have some cats in the café. By the way, have you heard of cat poop coffee? Besides coffee, we could also set up a tea room; Chinese tea has more flavor in its tradition. Oh, and we should add some incense and traditional instruments like the guzheng and pipa—yes, let’s do that..."
I bit my lip; although I had some rapport with Zhang Yuru, this was about the survival of my café. I needed to muster the courage to kick this silly woman out.
Just as I was about to speak up, my phone rang.
I answered it to hear Liu Xin's voice: "Song Fei, can you come over? There’s been an incident at the tea house."
Hearing Liu Xin’s serious tone made me immediately ask, "What happened?"
“I'm not going to go into details, but the master that Wang Chao brought seems a bit off. You should come over quickly,” Liu Xin said.
I hung up the phone and immediately ran to change my clothes, throwing on a casual sports outfit. I grabbed my backpack and headed out. Zhang Yuru wanted to come with me.
I turned to her and said, “You stay here. You need to think more about the work situation. I'll head out first, and we'll be back.” I tossed the coffee shop keys to Zhang Yuru.
After grabbing my car keys, I went downstairs. Once I reached the car, I called Liu Yiyi. She sensed something was wrong and wanted to come too, so I drove over to her company to pick her up. Together, we headed straight for the Ancient Style Teahouse.
About three hundred meters from the Ancient Style Teahouse, there was an open area with an altar set up. A black dog had been killed, a black donkey slaughtered, and a rooster was tied up. The scene was imposing, and an old man in a master’s robe sat nearby with a dark expression on his face.
After getting out of the car, I hurried over and asked, “What happened here?”
As soon as Wang Chao saw me, he rushed over, fuming. “Song Fei, what do you mean by this? Are you trying to get us killed on purpose?”
