Gravekeeper
Liu Jin continued, "That Sunny Doll is indeed a bit frightening. If it weren't for my wife, I would have been scared too. When my wife found out about the doll, she immediately wanted to throw it away. That night, we briefly discussed getting rid of it, but then my wife had a nightmare. She dreamt of a blood-soaked baby crying, and as it cried, it smiled at her, which terrified her so much that we had to take her to the hospital that night."
"Was it that serious?" I frowned and asked, "What happened next?"
Liu Jin replied, "After that, I called my cousin. He emphasized that the doll needed to be worshipped. He went to find the person who made the doll; I don't know who they are, but later my cousin called me and sent me a piece of clothing. He told me never to mistreat the doll again because the person who made the Sunny Doll charged him two hundred thousand yen for that piece of clothing. My cousin had my wife wear it for three days and then burn it. After I received the clothing, I did just that. Sure enough, after my wife wore it, she immediately stopped having a fever and nightmares, and she was discharged from the hospital. This incident left a deep impression on me, so I've always treated that Sunny Doll well. Then our shop got shut down, and when the police came to arrest us, I didn't think much of it and handed the Sunny Doll to one of the female officers. That's how everything unfolded."
After listening to Liu Jin's account, I thought for a moment. There was no reason for Liu Jin to lie to me; everything he said seemed true. From this perspective, the Sunny Doll was indeed ominous, but the person who made it must have a way to control it.
I asked Liu Jin, "Give me your cousin's contact information. Also, we need to find the person who made the doll."
Liu Jin looked troubled and said, "Officer, after we got arrested, my cousin would definitely cut off his contact information; that's something we agreed on beforehand. So all I can tell you is what his company is called. Right now, I can't get in touch with him. As for the person who made the Sunny Doll, I really have no idea where they are."
I looked at Liu Jin; he had a pleading expression on his face.
I waved my hand and said, "Alright, tell me your cousin's details—make sure it's thorough."
Liu Jin nodded repeatedly. "My distant cousin is around forty years old; he's been in Japan for thirteen years now and comes back at most once a year—sometimes he doesn't return for many years. His name is Yang Bin; in Japan, he might be called Yang Nianguo or have another Japanese name—I don't know that. His company is Haiwen Stationery Company, but that's just a front; he doesn't really deal in stationery. He mainly recruits various people in Japan to collect ivory products from the market and then ships them back to China by sea. Sometimes he also goes specifically to places like Thailand or Laos. In short, my cousin is quite impressive and wealthy; he has a good standing in Japan as well. He's the overall boss behind this entire transportation chain—that's all I know."
I recorded all the important information. "Alright, you'll need to stay in your cell for a while longer until we catch your cousin before we can release you. You need to understand this is for your safety."
Liu Jin immediately responded, "Okay, okay! I trust you all—I trust the people and the government."
"Get lost," I said as I stood up and ignored Liu Jin's ramblings before walking out of the interrogation room with Lin Fan.
Outside the interrogation room, Xiao Teng, Hao Yun, and Chen Shan naturally heard the conversation inside.
Chen Shan frowned and looked at me. "Song, going to Japan is a bit dangerous. After all, once you're there, we won't be able to protect you. Pursuing fugitives across countries is very difficult and the process is lengthy. It requires various negotiations between the two countries, and it could take at least a month to complete all the necessary procedures."
I thought for a moment and replied, "Chen Team, Lin Fan's condition can't wait for a month. I'll take Lin Fan to Japan first. I'm not going there to capture Yang Bin; I'm just going to find the producer of Sunny Doll. The risk should be minimal."
Chen Shan pondered for a moment. "There is still some danger involved. I think I should send a few people to accompany you."
I laughed. "Chen Team, the more people you send, the more dangerous it becomes for me. Once we get there, it'll definitely be Yang Bin's territory. If there are too many people, he'll notice. If he sees me as an enemy, that could lead to trouble. How about this: since you're planning to capture Yang Bin anyway, you can have officers accompany us to Japan while you investigate Yang Bin's crimes in secret and apply for the necessary procedures with Interpol and the Japanese National Police Agency. As for us, we're just going to rescue Lin Fan and won't participate in any operations. If we do run into danger, we can always call on our comrades for help."
"Alright, that sounds safe." Chen Shan turned to Xiao Teng. "Old Xiao, can you manage this? Gather a few elite officers from your bureau to head to Japan. If you can't spare anyone, I can provide some assistance."
"Come on!" Xiao Teng patted Chen Shan on the shoulder. "This case is under our Lingshui Municipal Bureau's jurisdiction; what does it have to do with your Donghai City? Move aside! I'm going to gather personnel now; you help them get their passports sorted out. This case is one we need to handle ourselves; it's a big deal for us."
"Hahaha!" Chen Shan laughed, pointing at Xiao Teng. "I knew you wouldn't want to share any credit with us. Fine, I'll go get the passports sorted."
After our discussion concluded, Lin Fan, Zhang Yuru, and I returned to our place of residence. Zhang Yuru drove alone back to Donghai City and the coffee shop while Lin Fan and I headed towards Japan. It was mainly because dealing with matters in Japan could be troublesome; having Zhang Yuru along might sometimes become a burden.
I didn't have much fondness for Japan and felt a bit uneasy about going there. The main concern was that I couldn't bring any firearms; they wouldn't pass security checks. Taking an alternative route would take too long and wouldn't be good for Lin Fan's health.
Originally, this matter didn't concern me much; helping out here was already beyond what I should do. However, I couldn't just leave Lin Fan alone now; that would be too unethical.
I packed a large bag of clothes and checked the current temperature in Japan; it wasn't too high over there.
I looked over my suitcase three times before finally feeling ready.
Lin Fan sat on the sofa, her complexion looking much better. This was mainly because I had been giving her lamb soup, nourishing medicines, and Ejiao blocks during this time, which had greatly improved her health.
Seeing that I seemed a bit anxious, Lin Fan smiled and said, "It's just a trip abroad. Why are you so worked up?"
I chuckled and moved closer to her. "It's just going to Japan. I'm worried that the locals might be hostile and try to keep me there. That would be terrible."
Lin Fan rolled her eyes. "You're overthinking it. Although our two countries aren't exactly friendly, we're neighbors after all, and we can still maintain some level of amicability. Just look around; Main Street is filled with Japanese cars. Plus, many old ladies and old men go to Japan to buy rice cookers and toilet seats, so there's really no need to worry."
I thought about it and realized she was right. I laughed, "You're right; I really don't need to be too nervous."
Lin Fan leaned a bit closer to me. "Song Fei, thank you! When my boyfriend gets a break from the army, I'll make sure he properly thanks you and repays you."
I quickly waved my hand. "Sister, as long as you don't tell your boyfriend that I shared a bed with you, I'll be grateful."
Lin Fan burst into laughter.
I thought Lin Fan looked quite pretty when she laughed, similar to Zhang Yuru. No wonder they were best friends; they must have been the campus beauties back in their days at the Police Academy.
We had a simple dinner and then took a stroll near Yihe. The air in the city wasn't great, and there were too many vehicles; neither Lin Fan nor I liked it much. After wandering by the river for a bit, we returned to the hotel and went to sleep.
In the middle of the night, I heard a series of cries coming from Lin Fan's stomach, reminiscent of a baby's wail. I was taken aback and sat up, looking at her belly.
Lin Fan was fast asleep.
Before long, a dark mist began to swirl around, slowly forming into the shape of a large-headed baby. The baby's eyes were blood-red as it lay on Lin Fan's belly, staring at me.
I also looked at the baby.
The baby glared at me fiercely, his eyes filled with malice. His chubby little hand reached out and pressed down towards Lin Fan's heart. Then, with a gentle squeeze of that dark hand, Lin Fan suddenly began to breathe rapidly.
I immediately understood the baby's intention; he was capable of taking Lin Fan's life at any moment! That dark hand could easily crush Lin Fan's heart!
I stared at the baby, watching Lin Fan's pained expression. I knew he wasn't joking. I quickly said, "Okay! Okay! I won't move, I'll step back. Just don't hurt her!"
The Ghost Fetus released its grip in satisfaction and climbed onto Lin Fan's chest, starting to feed again.
This time, I truly dared not disturb him. It seemed these Ghost Fetuses were quite afraid of me; they never seemed to be full whenever they came out, and today he had suddenly gone berserk. I looked at the Ghost Fetus on Lin Fan's chest and gritted my teeth; it was clear that I had to get rid of this guy as soon as possible. Allowing a ghost to drain a person's essence right here made me feel ashamed; it felt like a failure in life.
I stood by the bed, watching as the Ghost Fetus finally seemed satisfied and then swiftly burrowed back into Lin Fan's belly.
