“Yeah, what's up?” I asked.
“There have been several strange cases here in Zhenjiang. Captain Chen and I were sent by the Provincial Department to assist with the investigation. Since you're here, why not take a look? This case seems a bit eerie, and I think we can only rely on you,” Qin Hai said.
Upon hearing this, I felt even more excited. There should be some ghostly energy I could gather from Ma Xiang's side, and now with new powers emerging here with Qin Hai, this was fantastic.
I asked Qin Hai for the address and hung up the phone.
I turned to Ada and said, “Alright, sorry to bother you. Now that I understand the background of the suit, I can put my mind at ease. See you later.” I left Ada's house and drove towards the address Qin Hai provided.
The address led me to the Forensic Department of the County Public Security Bureau in Zhenjiang.
As I walked in, I overheard Qin Hai talking inside. He exclaimed loudly, “Ah, this case is in our hands! With Captain Chen and me on it, we’ll solve it in no time!”
Hearing this made me feel a bit uneasy; when Qin Hai mentioned “we have someone,” he was definitely referring to me.
I entered the Forensic Department, and as soon as Qin Hai saw me, he rushed over. “Master Song Fei, you finally made it! Come take a look at this case.”
Chen Shan was dressed in a uniform that exuded authority and stood there alongside several other imposing officers from nearby counties.
I walked over to Chen Shan. “Brother Chen.”
Chen Shan nodded at me. “What a coincidence! Since you're here, why not check out this case? Recently, there have been four corpse cases happening consecutively in Zhenjiang. The higher-ups have reassigned our Criminal Investigation Team here to analyze the situation and find out who’s behind these incidents to prevent anything similar from happening again.”
I said, "Alright, I'll do my best. Let's take a look at the body first."
The officers from the Criminal Investigation Team in several other counties glanced at me, clearly unimpressed by my youth. They probably expected Master Qin Hai to be an old Taoist.
I didn't pay them much mind and walked with Chen Shan toward the Autopsy Table.
When we reached the table, Chen Shan lifted the white cloth covering the case. Beneath it lay a withered figure, resembling a Corpse. The skin on the person's body was tightly wrinkled, completely devoid of moisture. Their face had two sunken eye sockets, and the skin clung tightly to the bones beneath.
A Corpse!
I was momentarily stunned, but then it hit me: these individuals had been attacked by Ghosts, which drained their Essence. After absorbing this Essence, Ghosts could regain their strength, while these people would gradually become emaciated. Without Essence, they could no longer absorb food or replenish their blood and energy, ultimately leading to their current state.
Having learned witchcraft, I understood this well.
Seeing the four Corpses made me swallow hard. If I could find that monster behind this, I would truly strike it rich! The Demonic Power contained within a monster is far greater than that of ordinary Vengeful Spirits!
I turned to Chen Shan and asked, "Brother Chen, this case is indeed strange. Did they visit any unusual places before they died?"
Chen Shan glanced at me and then turned to another officer. "Long, did they go anywhere strange?"
The officer named Long was likely from the local police station in Zhenjiang County Town and was the primary investigator of this case. He quickly replied, "These four were just ordinary construction workers. They had been working on-site and hadn't gone anywhere else. The only slightly unusual thing is that about half a month ago, they were hired to dig a grave for a wealthy businessman for three hundred yuan. Other than that, nothing special."
"Digging a Grave?" Chen Shan pondered for a moment. "That should be a pretty normal job. There are many burials happening; I've never heard of grave diggers dying like this. Song Fei, what do you think?"
I walked over, feeling a bit puzzled, and casually asked, "Who are we digging a grave for?"
"It's for that real estate tycoon from a few days ago, Ma Xiang," replied the officer named Long.
Upon hearing this, I slapped my forehead. "It's him! Let's go check out his burial site."
Chen Shan, upon hearing this, asked, "What? You know him?"
I briefly explained the situation regarding the suit, of course omitting any mention of the Grave Robber or Ada. I only mentioned that he died with resentment, which could lead to a corpse transformation.
The elite detectives from other places, seeing Chen Shan trust me so much, became somewhat skeptical but decided to follow us to Ma Xiang's family burial site since there were no other leads at the moment.
Ma Xiang's hometown was in the rural area of Zhenjiang. He was a child from the countryside who worked hard to build his fortune and became a real estate mogul in Zhenjiang.
When we arrived at Ma Xiang's hometown, Ma Family Village, I was surprised to find that it wasn't too poor; at least the roads were well-maintained. Upon inquiry, I learned that Ma Xiang had funded the road repairs.
Ma Family Village was situated on a hillside. Life must have been tough before, but ever since the road was built, their lives had improved significantly. Moreover, many villagers were related to Ma Xiang and likely benefited from him in various ways.
All of this made it clear that Ma Xiang was not a bad person. Although he died with resentment, it didn't seem possible for him to become such a powerful ghost. Besides, consuming human essence was not something ordinary vengeful spirits could do; it required considerable demonic power.
I felt quite curious about this but didn’t dwell on it too much since my mind was preoccupied with extracting demonic power.
As we reached the burial site and I had just stepped out of the car, I heard Long shout and then saw him run back with a pale face.
"What happened?" Chen Shan asked, frowning.
The dragon pointed at Ma Xiang's grave. "Captain Chen, Ma Xiang's body... is missing!"
I quickly followed Chen Shan and the others to the grave, where we found that the grave had collapsed, revealing a black wooden coffin inside. The lid of the coffin was opened, and it was empty.
I picked up the Peach Wood Sword and jumped down into the grave. A chilling sensation enveloped me as I approached the coffin, and I shivered while looking around.
There were clear scratch marks on the walls of the coffin!
Corpse Transformation!
I jumped back up from the grave.
At that moment, Chen Shan was already examining the soil layers. With his experience, he could tell the time based on the freshness of the soil. "Some of this soil has been recently disturbed. Based on the timing, it must have happened last night. It seems Ma Xiang hasn't been gone for long."
Hearing this, the other detectives exchanged glances. At this point, it was clear that this was no ordinary criminal case; it had turned into a supernatural incident.
Chen Shan stood up, his expression serious. He looked at me and asked, "Song Fei, are you sure that Ma Xiang left on his own and wasn't taken by someone?"
"He left on his own, and Corpse Transformation has already occurred!" I replied confidently. However, I felt a twinge of doubt in my heart. I couldn't understand why Ma Xiang had such strong resentment after being buried for so long that he could undergo Corpse Transformation. Logically, if there was indeed a Corpse Transformation, it should have happened immediately after burial or during the seventh day after death. Moreover, it shouldn't be so powerful as to be able to consume human essence.
The key point was that Ma Xiang had escaped last night, but those four corpses clearly hadn't just encountered trouble recently!
Things were a bit strange, so I could only investigate step by step.
I said, “Ma Xiang has definitely turned into a Zombie; the nail marks in the coffin can prove that.”
Chen Shan took a deep breath and asked, “What should we do now?”
I replied, “First, we need to figure out where Ma Xiang has gone. If he has already fed on four buried individuals, he will definitely look for more people, likely his enemies or something similar. Let’s analyze this first.”
As I spoke, I suddenly thought of Ada. Ada had dug up Ma Xiang's Grave; would she be targeted for revenge?
Thinking of this, I quickly dialed Ada's number, but it rang for a long time without anyone picking up.
I started to feel anxious and glanced at the sky; it was getting dark. This Big White Zombie couldn’t come out and start killing people, could it?
“What’s wrong?” Qin Hai asked when he saw my tense expression.
I shook my head and said, “Something might have happened. I’ll try calling again.” With that, I picked up my phone again while preparing to drive to Ada's house.
The other detectives left with Chen Shan, leaving only Qin Hai and Long to follow me. The three of us were going to catch the Zombie.
After thirty seconds had passed, just when I thought Ada was doomed, a voice suddenly came through the line—it was Ada’s impatient voice. “Hello? Who is this?”
“It’s me! Song Fei! How are you doing right now?” I immediately asked, feeling relieved.
"Ada," hearing my voice, was probably about to explode with anger. He shouted, "Brother Song, Master Song! Are you trying to kill me?"
"What are you talking about? I'm not playing with you. I need to tell you that Ma Xiang's body has gone missing and might be coming for you!" I replied.
Ada paused for a moment, then said, "I just took one of his clothes. Is that really necessary? But you, I was all set with tissues, and just when I was about to take care of things, you knocked on my door! I was just getting into it, ready to come out, and then you kept calling. Are you trying to kill me? Are you trying to suffocate me? I'd rather have Ma Xiang here!" Ada was furious, clearly unhappy that I had interrupted him twice in a row.
Upon hearing this, I felt a headache coming on. "What are you thinking at a time like this? You still want to... you're about to lose your life!"
"What does it have to do with me? I just stole a piece of clothing! Boss is looking for someone; he’s looking for that driver," Ada muttered.
I was taken aback for a moment and then realized, "Damn it, keep doing what you're doing. Your brain isn't fried yet; you've reminded me that Ma Xiang is definitely going after that driver."
With that, I hung up the phone and turned to Long. "Which driver was responsible for the accident that killed Ma Xiang's wife and son?"
