Long thought for a moment, "Let me check on that. This matter has always been handled by the traffic police department, so I'm not really sure." He then made a phone call, and soon after, he hung up. "It's someone from Hailong Construction Company, a person named Li Xian. He usually lives at Hailong Construction Company."
I got into the car. "Let's head to Hailong Construction Company."
Hailong Construction Company was located near Jinshan Temple; it was quite a large construction firm.
After we arrived at the company, the three of us walked inside when several security guards rushed over and surrounded us, blocking our way.
Long took out his police badge. "We are police officers looking for your company's Li Xian to inquire about the situation."
The security guards did not leave. One of them said, "I'm sorry, sir. Let me consult our boss first." The guard then pulled out his phone to make a call.
Qin Hai seemed displeased. "We're here to help catch a zombie, and these damn security guards treat us like thieves. Even knowing we're police officers, they still act this way. It's infuriating."
Long also found it strange. He took out his phone and called the nearby police station, asking them to send someone over to assist with the case.
Before long, a chubby officer arrived in a police car at the entrance of Hailong Construction Company. He adjusted his hat and quickly ran over.
"Hello, everyone! I'm Zhu Zhong, the deputy director of the Jinshan Road police station nearby." Zhu Zhong said with a smile as he waddled toward us.
Although he was a deputy director, his position was actually lower than Long's. The head of a district police station held the same rank as the captains of various teams in the City Bureau, but their importance was not comparable. Generally speaking, once someone became the head of a district station, their career would reach its peak.
Zhu Zhong appeared very humble and friendly as he smiled at the three of us.
Long nodded. "Director Zhu, what's going on with this company? We need to enter to conduct an investigation, but they stopped us right away and haven't sent anyone down yet."
Zhu Zhong glanced at the sign of Hailong Construction Company and whispered, "Comrade Long, you may not know this, but the boss of this company is named Li Kui; he's quite influential."
“Li Kui? Why does that name sound so familiar?” Long rubbed his nose in confusion.
Zhu Zhong replied, “You’re young, so you might not remember. The older cops do. This guy used to be part of the Black Society. There was a big incident where Li Kui burned an entire family alive. Later, the police arrested him, but due to someone taking the blame and some pressure, he was released!”
Upon hearing this, Long slapped his thigh and exclaimed, “What the hell! So it’s him? That big bad guy has become the boss of a company?”
Zhu Zhong nodded and continued in a low voice, “This construction company often has accidents. Just look at their fleet; all the drivers are his former subordinates. They’ve left the underworld but now drive trucks. They frequently overload and break traffic laws. We all know how dangerous overloaded trucks can be; they can’t stop in time, and cargo can roll off the roof. Because of this, there are over ten fatalities every year under their trucks.”
“Really?” I was taken aback. “So… what happens when people die? Don’t the police investigate?”
Zhu Zhong smiled wryly, “Of course they investigate, but these are classified as traffic accidents, usually resulting in fines and points deducted. However, Li Kui knows accidents will happen, so he always buys insurance worth millions. That way, if something goes wrong, it’s the insurance company that pays, not him.”
Qin Hai and I exchanged glances.
Qin Hai grabbed my arm and said, “Let’s go back. What the hell! Turns out he’s just scum of society; we were worried about catching a damn zombie!”
I felt equally frustrated. I had thought it was just an ordinary car accident that led to Ma Xiang's wife and child dying, but it turned out this company had a history of issues.
But to absorb Demonic Power, I had to endure.
At that moment, several people approached from a distance. The leader wore a black trench coat reminiscent of Shanghai Beach fashion, with a cigar in his mouth and a thick gold chain around his neck, followed by a few others.
He laughed heartily as he walked over, removing the cigar from his mouth and saying loudly, “Ah! It’s comrades from the police station! My company just had an incident, and you’re already here—what great public servants! Come on in; welcome to your investigation!”
Zhu Zhong wiped the sweat from his forehead and whispered, “That’s Li Kui.”
I glanced at Li Kui; he had a fierce look about him—definitely not an ordinary person. Behind Li Kui stood a monk dressed in a yellow robe!
Long remained calm. Having spent years in the Criminal Investigation Division dealing with various criminals, he was naturally unafraid of Li Kui. He stepped forward and said, "Boss Li, quite the attitude you have! We've been waiting at the entrance of your company for a whole half hour. However, we're here to find Driver Li Xian, not to cause trouble for you, Boss Li. No need to feel guilty, haha."
Li Kui laughed heartily, "The police comrade is joking! I, Li Kui, have nothing to feel guilty about. As for Li Xian, I'm afraid you won't be able to find him because he died yesterday!"
Upon hearing that Li Xian was dead, I narrowed my eyes. Sure enough, Ma Xiang had already arrived.
"Where's the body? We need to see it," I said.
Li Kui glanced at me and replied, "Seeing it is fine, but I'm afraid you might get scared. Haha! Alright then, I was planning to call the police myself. Since you're here now, let's consider this my report. What do you say, police comrade? I'm still a law-abiding citizen, right? Hahaha!"
With that, Li Kui turned around and walked towards the construction site while puffing on his cigar.
At the site was a temporary dormitory.
Li Kui had someone push open the door to the dormitory and let us inside.
As I entered the dormitory, I saw a young man twisted in death on the bed. His eyes bulged out, and his face bore a terrifying expression; it was clear he had been frightened before dying. His neck was blackened, indicating he had been strangled to death.
I approached and touched Li Xian's neck. There was something slightly fuzzy on it that resembled white fungus.
I quickly withdrew my hand; it was clear that Li Xian had been killed by a White-haired Zombie.
Qin Hai walked over, glanced at the corpse, and then asked me, "So? Do you have any confidence? If not, we should withdraw."
I shook my head. "I don't know. Logically speaking, there should be some confidence since it's just a person who died half a month ago. Besides, he wasn't an evil person; once he killed his enemy and resentment came out, he would just be an ordinary Zombie that I could easily handle. But looking at these wounds... I feel it's a bit precarious. This... seems like a White-haired Zombie. How could it evolve into one in just half a month?"
Qin Hai replied, "Then let's leave. It's not worth risking our lives for someone like this." Qin Hai was quite angry with Li Kui and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
I certainly wouldn't leave. The White-haired Zombie, while dangerous, was even more tempting to me. This type of Zombie was powerful, and the Demonic Power it provided was naturally abundant.
Li Kui glanced at me and Qin Hai, chuckling, "I don't recognize you two police officers. I haven't seen you before. But that's fine; I know you both have opinions about me, Li Kui. Haha, who can blame me for making so much money? It's clear that you two know who the murderer in this case is. To be honest, I'm not afraid at all. If that Zombie doesn't show up tonight, that's fine; but if it dares to come, my companion, Dehong Master, will take care of it!"
I looked at Dehong Master behind Li Kui. The old monk wore a robe and had a serious expression; he truly seemed like a master with profound abilities.
I smiled at Li Kui and said, "Since Boss Li is so confident, we might as well relax. By the way, we're staying here as guests of Boss Li tonight; you wouldn't mind, would you?"
Li Kui grinned and replied, "Feel free! I, Li Kui, am not afraid of the police or these kinds of monsters!" With that, Li Kui turned and left with Dehong Master.
Qin Hai pulled me out of the dormitory and muttered, "Why are you staying? I can't stand this guy; it'd be better if he were dead."
I replied, "I'm not going to help him; I just really want to see what happened to Ma Xiang. I feel like there's something strange about this whole case. There are many who died with resentment, yet no one else has turned into a Zombie—let alone a White-haired Zombie. This kind of Zombie doesn't form in just three or five years."
"Why bother thinking about it?" Qin Hai was still a bit angry.
I just chuckled without saying anything.
At that moment, Zhu Zhong approached us. He seemed a bit worried about us causing trouble with Li Kui. Seeing Li Kui leave made Zhu Zhong breathe a sigh of relief. He asked, "So, do you want to stay and watch Dehong Master catch ghosts or head back?"
"You know that Dehong Master?" I asked.
Zhu Zhong's chubby face broke into a smile. "Of course! Dehong Master is from our Jinshan Temple. By the way, you must know Jinshan Temple—it’s the one from The Legend of the White Snake. There are many masters there; Dehong Master is one of them. However, his fees are a bit high, so his reputation isn't great. But his abilities are indeed profound."
"Jinshan Temple?" I recalled that Dehong Master was indeed the abbot of Jinshan Temple. Although The Legend of the White Snake is a tale, Dehong Master was a real historical figure.
Jinshan Temple was nearby. In the afternoon, Qin Hai and I had taken a tour around Jinshan Temple under Zhu Zhong's guidance. While Jinshan Temple wasn't as famous as Shaolin Temple, its incense offerings were quite prosperous—hardly inferior to Shaolin Temple at all.
I casually inquired about the person known as Master Dahong, and to my surprise, opinions about this old monk varied greatly. Some people admired him, claiming he possessed profound magical abilities, curing illnesses and vanquishing demons with great skill. Others, however, insisted that Master Dahong was not a proper monk; he had become ensnared by greed and lacked the compassion expected of someone who had renounced the world. They pointed out that he charged at least fifty thousand for each ritual he performed. Because of this, Master Dahong had already been expelled from the Jinshan Temple by its abbot.
Later that evening, after we had finished dinner, I said, "Let's head over to Hailong Construction Company and join in the excitement. I have a feeling that Ma Xiang will definitely go looking for Li Kui tonight."
Qin Hai replied, "That's fine, but don't get involved. It would be best if Zombie took care of Li Kui."
Long nodded in agreement. "Killing Li Kui would be a service to the people. Besides, witnessing Zombie in action would certainly be an eye-opener for me."
Zhu Zhong wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and said, "Um... can I opt out? I still have a wife and kids..."
Long quickly waved his hand. "Director Zhu, you're too polite. If you don't want to go, then don't. We appreciate your hospitality this afternoon; we'll take our leave now."
