I glanced at the business card; the person was named Wang Tieniu, the boss of a renovation company.
Wang Tieniu! Goodness, what kind of remote place must he have come from to have a name like that? Even the people in our village have names that sound more impressive!
Wang Tieniu was pulled away by that Beard.
After thinking for a moment, I picked up my phone and called Chen Shan, asking him to introduce me to some local police friends in Suzhou.
Chen Shan readily agreed.
Before long, Chen Shan sent me a number and told me to contact this person. I called him, and he was very polite. He said if I needed anything, I could bring a few officers to the front of the museum, and he would be there right away.
Holding my phone, I followed behind Wang Tieniu and watched as he and the Beard entered the automatic transfer machine.
I stood waiting at a nearby street corner.
Not long after, my phone rang. The man informed me that he had arrived and asked me to come to the bank next door.
Then I saw five uniformed police officers walking toward me. One of them waved his phone; he was the person Chen Shan had introduced to me.
I stood aside and waved them over.
The man was named Old Yan; he was a police officer, and the four others with him were Auxiliary Police.
I said, "Yan Ge, let's do it now. No need to wait for them to complete the transfer. You all go straight into the bank and apprehend that Beard. Bring him back to the station."
"Let's go!" Old Yan said.
I led Old Yan and the others toward the bank. After just a couple of steps, Wang Tiezhu rushed out, looking flustered as he left, and Beard followed closely behind him, wearing a satisfied expression. It was clear he had already received the money.
When Beard saw me walking with several Auxiliary Police officers, he froze for a moment before turning to run away. "That's the guy," I said, and I was the first to charge after him.
Having gone through so much, my physical condition was far superior to that of an average person. I sprinted over and kicked Beard down to the ground. Knowing he had Triangular Spikes hidden in his sleeve, I quickly flipped him over and pinned him down.
"Help! The Urban Management is beating people! They're using violence!" Beard shouted, clearly aware of how to play the victim.
Old Yan walked over, yanked Beard by the hair, and pulled him up. Two other officers came over to put handcuffs on him.
"Tomb Raiding, illegally buying and selling antiques, a con artist—how dare you shout like that?! Don't you know cultural relics must be turned over to the state?" I said, giving Beard another kick.
"Move!" Old Yan ordered as he pushed Beard toward a nearby police car.
I glanced around and noticed three men watching us intently. They were definitely part of Beard's crew. It made sense; such a con couldn't be pulled off alone. Someone had to play the Feng Shui Master, someone else had to act as a supporter to show how impressive this Feng Shui Master was, and there needed to be others posing as bystanders.
I didn't pay them much mind; all I needed was to figure out the origin of that jade piece.
I squeezed into the police car and looked at Beard.
Beard met my gaze with a sorrowful expression. "Big brother, sir, grandpa! I'm calling you grandpa now; is that okay? We’re just trying to make a living here—can you leave us a way out?"
I stared at Beard coldly. "I don't want to waste time talking. Tell me where you got that jade pendant."
"If I tell you, will you let me go?" Beard asked in surprise.
I nodded.
"Beard" sighed in relief, "I found it in the moat, specifically in the section to the northwest, near the North Gate of Suzhou City and the Old City Wall."
"You're full of crap! This jade was clearly dug up from an ancient tomb, and you dare to lie to me." I frowned. "It seems I need to show you some consequences before you'll tell the truth."
"Please!" "Beard" exclaimed. "Everything I said is true! If I'm lying even a little, may my mother get hit by a car when she goes out. How's that? Really, I was fishing in the river because the market for Ancient Jade has been terrible lately; no one is buying or selling it. I couldn't sell the fake stuff I had, so I switched to fishing to help with household expenses, and that's when I pulled out this piece of jade. Mine is real; as for why it ended up in the river, maybe it washed out from some tomb below. When I got this jade, I thought I'd make a fortune this time. I figured selling it outright wouldn't yield much, so I gathered a few friends and staged this whole act."
I frowned again.
"Old Yan" said, "This guy isn't lying."
I nodded. "Alright then. Let's value this jade at one million; transfer four million back to Wang Tieniu's account, and we'll consider this matter settled. Otherwise, I'll have to take you into custody and charge you with fraud."
"Brother, you can't do this..." "Beard" looked sorrowful.
I waved my hand dismissively. "I don't have time for your nonsense; choose whichever path you want!"
"Beard" glanced around at "Old Yan" and the others in their police uniforms and reluctantly said, "Fine, I'll return four million. Sigh."
"You should be satisfied with making a million," I scoffed.
A few of "Old Yan's" team escorted "Beard" to the bank.
Before long, they returned, and "Old Yan" confirmed that everything was settled.
I nodded and took out my phone to call Wang Tieniu. I had to get that jade pendant, whether by buying it or any other means; I needed to have it.
I dialed the phone, and it quickly connected. "Hello, Brother Wang, this is Song Fei, the one you met before—the one interested in that jade pendant you have."
"Ah! Hello, Song Fei." Wang Tieniu seemed surprised that I was calling him.
I said, "Brother Wang, you should have received that four million by now."
"What? Did you transfer it to me? Why?" Wang Tieniu immediately responded, clearly puzzled as he had just received the bank transfer notification.
I replied, "It wasn't me who transferred it. Let's meet up; I'll come find you. Also, don't believe what that Feng Shui Master said for now."
Wang Tieniu quickly suggested a place not far from Zhuozheng Garden, near Guanqian Street.
I hung up the phone, bid farewell to Old Yan and the others, then took a taxi to Guanqian Street. Upon arriving at a teahouse there, I walked inside.
Wang Tieniu was sitting at a table, anxiously waiting. When he saw me, he immediately stood up and waved me over.
"Song Fei, what's going on?" Wang Tieniu looked at me curiously.
I smiled and took a sip of tea—it was Biluochun and tasted quite good. "What's going on? You must have figured it out too. Your Feng Shui Master teamed up with the jade seller to scam you. That's why I reported it to the police, and they returned your four million. As for that jade pendant, it is indeed considered Ancient Jade; I'm not sure about its exact value, but all things considered, you're not too worse off."
"Ah?" Wang Tieniu didn't seem overly excited. He said, "Thank you, Song Fei. I suspected I was being scammed too, but I held onto a glimmer of hope—maybe it could really help my girlfriend. I never expected… sigh!"
I said, "Alright, Brother Wang, let's move on. I'm specialized in dealing with spirits. The jade pendant you bought is definitely not good; it's a piece of Ancient Jade dug up from a graveyard. The eerie energy is too strong; even men feel cold carrying it—let alone women."
Upon hearing this, Wang Tieniu immediately took out the Ancient Jade. "I was just thinking about how cold this jade feels. Would my girlfriend's condition worsen if she wore it? After what you said, I also feel it's indeed quite chilling."
I said, "First, go check on your girlfriend. I have one condition: Brother Wang, once she's cured, you either give me this pendant or sell it to me. How does that sound?"
"Alright!" Wang Tieniu immediately agreed, shoving the jade pendant into my hand. "Song Fei, I trust you. Let's go see my girlfriend. I really care about her, I truly do."
Seeing Wang Tieniu being so generous put me at ease. After putting away the jade, I said, "Okay, let's go."
Once we exited the teahouse, Wang Tieniu drove his Buick Business Vehicle towards the outskirts of Suzhou. We arrived at an upscale villa area near Golden Chicken Lake. He turned into the driveway and parked in front of one of the villas.
"Song Fei, when you go in, please don’t be scared," Wang Tieniu said hesitantly.
I chuckled, "Brother Wang, this is what I do for a living. Why would you worry about me being scared? Don’t worry; no matter what monsters or demons are there, I can handle them."
Wang Tieniu gave a sheepish smile and then took out his house key to unlock the door.
As we stepped inside, anguished screams echoed from the adjacent room. I frowned and walked toward the source of the noise.
Wang Tieniu quickly grabbed my arm. "Song Fei, you need to be careful. My girlfriend... she's been getting crazier lately. She attacks anything she sees, so please be cautious."
"I understand. Let me take a look at her first," I replied.
Reaching the adjacent room, Wang Tieniu took a deep breath and opened the door for me.
As soon as I pushed the door open, a disheveled woman lunged towards me.
I gripped my Azure Thunder Staff tightly. As she charged at me, I raised it instinctively but suddenly froze because there was no ghost attached to her!
"Huh?" I exclaimed.
At that moment, the woman had already leaped forward. A string of incomprehensible sounds escaped her lips; I had no idea what she was screaming about. With her claws outstretched and no sign of a spirit on her, I found myself with no choice but to dodge her attack.
Wang Tieniu rushed over and grabbed the woman, pushing her back slightly. However, in that brief moment, several blood marks had already appeared on Wang Tieniu's body.
I took the opportunity to survey the entire room. There was nothing in it, just an empty space with smooth wooden flooring on the walls. The windows were high up, and there was only one window; aside from that, there was nothing else.
As for this crazy woman, to be honest, she wasn't beautiful. Her skin was rough, and her appearance was just passable. She had a look that suggested she could bring good fortune to her partner, but she certainly couldn't be considered pretty. Standing about five feet tall and slightly overweight, given Wang Tieniu's wealth, he could easily afford to spend five million on a jade pendant and could definitely find a girlfriend ten times more attractive than this woman.
I stepped back outside.
Wang Tieniu also took the chance to close the door behind him, his face filled with sorrow and concern.
I said, "It's not a ghost; it seems there are other reasons. What happened between you and your girlfriend? Think carefully."
