Gravekeeper
"Of course it's a ghost! How would I know why a woman in a bright red Cheongsam suddenly appeared? And that woman, she's beautiful, speaking with a perfect British accent. She's already made Fendi fall in love with her; she wants to take over my body, she wants to become me!" Alice said, her face starting to turn pale. .. She was on the brink of collapse.
I realized something was wrong and quickly said, "Hey, Alice, just calm down for a moment."
Alice was gasping for breath, her complexion slowly returning to normal. She spoke again, "I don't know why, but when I heard about this, I felt so angry and heartbroken. I confronted Fendi. But he lunged at me, choking me tightly. He said, 'Qian, hurry up! This body is yours now.' Of course, I couldn't stand it. I pulled the hairpin from my head and stabbed it into my heart. I'd rather die than let someone else have my body. In that moment, I cursed Fendi with all my hatred, cursed that female ghost, wishing for them to die together! ... Then, when I woke up again, I had already become a ghost. Everything in this manor, including that ring, was cursed by me. But that female ghost, Qian, was living with my husband!"
"What!" Mona exclaimed, utterly confused. "Your husband is still with that ghost? Where are they?"
"Right here in this manor! They've taken my body; they've even moved the bed! They're making love in my body! That bastard! I can't find them, and I'm too afraid to look for them because my heart is in their hands. Every time they squeeze my heart, my resentment grows stronger and the curse intensifies. Now the entire manor has turned into a ghostly world while I wander here. I can still feel them making love; I can feel them pressing on my heart—those beasts..." Alice said as she began to sob uncontrollably again.
After listening to her story, I suddenly realized that Alice was quite pitiful as well; she was also a wounded soul. Perhaps she still harbored resentment towards her husband, but she didn't seem to blame the servants. It seemed her curse spread throughout the manor because of Fendi and that Chinese ghost!
I frowned; this was England—how could there be a Chinese ghost here?
Alice suddenly floated up and looked at me with blood-red eyes. "You are also Chinese; you are a Chinese Taoist! You must deal with the ghosts from your country! I have no other requests: return my body to me and give me back my husband; get rid of that female ghost! Then I will lift all curses. Otherwise, this woman wearing the ring must die!" With that, Alice pointed at Mona.
Seeing Alice's ghost pointing at her, Mona quickly reached for the ring on her finger. But no matter how hard she tried, it felt as if the ring had fused with her finger.
Alice floated higher and said, "Chinese boy, while I can't do anything to you directly, dealing with those around you is easy enough. Just watch." With that, Alice vanished in an instant.
"Damn it!" Mona muttered under her breath.
I turned around and shone my flashlight on her hand. "Let me see."
Mona immediately covered herself and said, "What are you looking at? Take off your pants quickly! I'm so unlucky to be stuck with you—possessed by a ghost and now taken advantage of by you! And now I've got this ring on that I can't even take off!"
I was at a loss for words.
I said, "There should be other clothes here. Let me find something for you." I really didn't want to run around bare.
Mona looked at Freezer's clothes and immediately shook her head. "No way, those are cursed."
Reluctantly, I took off my pants and handed them to Mona. I was left wearing only my tiny boxers.
Now that Mona had something to wear, she put on my pants and playfully patted my backside. "Come on, Daoist. Who would have thought your backside is quite perky?"
I rolled my eyes and asked, "Where are we going?"
Mona turned back to me. "Of course, we're going to find Alice's husband. You don't plan on leaving me behind and running away, do you?"
I shot her a glare. "If I were that kind of person, I wouldn't have come to rescue you in the first place. Right, finding Alice's husband starts from this bedroom. Don't you think this room feels a bit different?"
With all her clothes gone and no flashlight, Mona could only follow the beam of my flashlight. She nodded after taking a quick look around. "The Wedding Bed is gone."
I nodded in agreement. "According to Alice's law, her husband must have taken both the Wedding Bed and Alice's body away to hide them. Let's see if we can find any clues."
Upon hearing this, Mona squatted down and examined the bloodstains. She took the flashlight from my hand and shone it around the entire room before moving to the window. She knocked on the window and said, "The Wedding Bed was taken out through here."
"How do you know?" I walked over.
Mona felt along the edge of the window and explained briefly, "Look at the shape of the bloodstains. At that time, Alice's body was on the Wedding Bed, and she was stabbed in the heart, so there was quite a bit of blood. The blood on the floor doesn't lead towards the door; instead, there are some stains near the bed... Ah, here it is..."
As she pressed down, the window suddenly flew open with a whoosh. Outside was a half-meter-high railing, which indeed showed signs of having been touched. The design of this bedroom was quite clever; the entire wall was made of windows. If you raised the windows, this bedroom could serve as a large balcony.
I stood outside the window, looking down at the railing. The Wedding Bed should have been placed directly onto the Ground below. I couldn't understand why Fendi had to take the Wedding Bed down as well; it would have been easier to just hide Alice's body without moving the bed.
We looked down from the windowsill.
"Let's go down," I said. "From inside the house."
"Okay."
Mona and I turned and headed down the stairs. When we reached the staircase, we found it crowded with Maid zombies, all making their way upstairs.
Mona immediately hid behind me.
Fortunately, I had the Corpse-Subduing Bell.
I shook the bell without holding back and swung my Azure Thunder Staff downward. Wherever the staff swept, the Maids tumbled down the stairs.
This time, I didn't hold back either. I grabbed a Fire Thunder Talisman and started attacking wildly, absorbing all that Ghostly Energy.
Mona tugged at my shirt from behind and muttered, "Looks like you're not completely useless after all. At least you look pretty cool dealing with these zombies, unlike some helpless girl."
"I..." I wanted to argue that I could be brave too, but thinking about Mona's skills made me reconsider. There was really no point in arguing since I was clearly much weaker than her.
We ran all the way downstairs and out of the house, then made our way to the back, finding ourselves directly beneath the bedroom.
Standing below, I looked up. This had to be the spot. If what Mona said was true, both the Wedding Bed and the body should have fallen here, leaving some marks on the ground.
I shone my flashlight on the ground, and indeed there were marks; since it was a grassy area, the Wedding Bed had left several indentations where it had landed.
Mona had already started following a faint trail, murmuring, "What great strength."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You know how heavy a bed is, just the mattress?" Mona replied.
I shook my head.
"The better the mattress, the heavier it is. Generally, it's at least over one hundred fifty kilograms. If you add the bed frame and everything, it’s at least three hundred kilograms. And this kind of thing is hard to lift. But I looked at the ground, and there were two sets of footprints. It’s clear that only one person was putting in the effort; the other was probably just helping to keep things stable. This person has a lot of strength."
I didn’t know how Mona could deduce all this from such subtle details in the dark; I just followed behind her, watching as she bent over, taking careful steps.
Suddenly, I remembered she was wearing my pants, and she wasn’t wearing anything underneath. Thinking about this made me feel a bit mischievous. I couldn’t help myself and reached out to pat Mona's rear. It was indeed quite bouncy.
Mona whipped around, glaring at me.
I quickly said, "Hey, I was just returning the favor! You patted my rear earlier too. Besides, you're wearing my pants; can’t I touch my own pants?"
Mona reached out and touched my chin, her gesture resembling that of an elder teasing an innocent girl.
"Detective, focus on the case. I'll reward you later," Mona said before turning back to search for traces on the ground.
We followed the trail until we reached the rockery. There was a large stone door there, and the footprints led inside.
"What is this?" I asked in confusion.
Mona looked at the stone door and said, "It's a basement. Many of our British Royal Nobility like to build these underground chambers in their yards. Some even dig underground passages. But this lock on the stone door is rather large..."
I followed the beam of the flashlight and saw that above the rockery's stone door was a copper lock, about the size of a basketball. Moreover, this lock had a structure resembling a letter "X," which would likely be difficult to open.
Mona walked over and touched the lock. Then she took a bracelet off her wrist, which she disassembled. After squeezing it, it transformed into a soft strip.
Mona inserted the steel strip into the lock and experimented for a while. After some fiddling, she shook her head and turned the steel strip back into a bracelet, putting it back on her wrist. "No, the structure of this lock is quite complex. If I want to open it, I would need at least three hours, and it has to be during the day, along with some other tools."
I approached and looked at the lock. "Why does this lock seem so familiar to me?"
Mona looked at me.
Then we both exclaimed, "Oh!" simultaneously, saying, "The key!"
