The magic in my chest was burning intensely as I sprinted toward the school gate. Behind my café, on the dimly lit street, two massive black figures were locked in combat under the moonlight.
"Bang!"
"Clang!"
The traffic light at the corner suddenly toppled to the ground.
"What the hell! What kind of monster is that?" Yang Gou Dan shouted as he rushed over.
Hearing Yang Gou Dan's voice, both black creatures turned to look at me simultaneously.
One of them was the large dog that had saved me from various Yin Yao before. It was engulfed in black flames, but the flames were faint now, and its body was covered in wounds, giving the impression that it could die at any moment.
The other black creature resembled a lizard but was much larger, over two meters long. Its mouth was like that of a lizard, and it could stand on two legs. The key detail was that it had two enormous wings, looking grotesque, like a dinosaur from an animated series.
"Hiss!"
At that moment, the lizard lunged forward like lightning, charging at the black dog.
The dog was clearly too injured and exhausted to defend itself and was knocked down by the lizard.
In an instant, the lizard's jaws snapped open and clamped onto the dog's neck with incredible speed, almost like a flash of lightning.
The black dog struggled violently.
Realizing the danger, I knew I couldn't just stand by. This dog had saved me twice; I couldn't let it die. Grabbing my Azure Thunder Staff, I charged toward the Black Lizard.
"Hey, hey, you called me twice."
I felt that adding "Yang Gou Dan" was of no use, so I quickly shouted, "Dog Egg, run! Call the police while you're at it, hurry up, don't worry about me!"
With that, I charged forward, raising the Azure Thunder Staff and bringing it down on the Black Lizard's head.
At first, I thought it wouldn't have much effect; after all, the Azure Thunder Staff was effective against zombies but completely useless against monsters or animals.
However, to my surprise, as soon as I struck, a flash of lightning erupted. The Black Lizard let out a howl, but it still wouldn't let go, clenching its jaws tightly around the black dog. Its hideously ugly eyes were fixed on me, filled with hatred!
At this moment, I was determined. I lifted the Azure Thunder Staff again and aimed for the Black Lizard's eyes. The creature dodged just in time, yet its mouth remained firmly clamped on the black dog.
The black flames enveloping the dog were about to extinguish completely. I estimated that once those flames went out, the black dog would be finished.
This dog had a connection to me and my mother! It had saved my life twice; how could I not save it in return?
I pulled out my gun and fired at the Black Lizard.
However, this creature was stronger than I had imagined. I fired five shots in quick succession, but the bullets barely penetrated; it didn't even bleed. It seemed as if it were not a living being at all—more like a loss of some sort—completely unafraid of bullets.
I swallowed hard and raised the Azure Thunder Staff again to chase after the Black Lizard. This was my last chance; if I didn't act soon, Big Black would be dead from its bites, and once Big Black was gone, I would surely follow.
But my speed couldn't match that of the Black Lizard. It continued to bite at Big Black while circling around at the intersection. My Azure Thunder Staff couldn't catch up to it.
Just as I was growing anxious, suddenly a beam of golden light flew over, followed by Yang Gou Dan's voice.
"Amitabha, seal!"
With a resonating hum, that golden light enveloped the Black Lizard! The light came from the beads around Yang Gou Dan's neck.
I looked at Yang Gou Dan with immense gratitude. I rushed forward and swung the Azure Thunder Staff directly at Black Lizard's face.
Black Lizard was furious and tried to break free, but Yang Gou Dan's beads were incredibly powerful; even Black Lizard couldn't escape.
With each strike, Black Lizard's face became charred from the lightning of the Azure Thunder Staff.
"Hiss!"
Black Lizard violently shook off Big Black and lunged at me with its jaws wide open.
I quickly dodged, but Black Lizard was too fast and managed to grab hold of my clothing.
I swung my arm, activating my magic in an instant, and with a loud boom, I blasted Black Lizard apart.
"Roar!"
Black Lizard roared at me in anger, but it couldn't move for the moment.
At that moment, another voice rang out, "Amitabha."
"Boom!" Thirty-six beams of golden light converged and struck down on Black Lizard's head.
Black Lizard roared again.
Then the second beam of golden light continued to fly in.
One beam of light after another.
After five consecutive hits, Black Lizard's head fell to the ground, and its entire body collapsed, turning into a puddle of black water.
I quickly ran over, wanting to absorb the Demonic Power of the Black Lizard, but it seemed to vanish into the ground in an instant, leaving no trace behind.
"Damn it!" I cursed under my breath, taking a few deep breaths to calm myself before checking on the Big Black dog.
Yang Gou Dan was also sitting on the ground, panting heavily.
I gave Yang Gou Dan a thumbs up, praising him for his bravery, and then turned my attention to the black dog.
The black dog looked incredibly ugly; at that moment, all the flames on its body had extinguished, revealing numerous wounds. Its neck was half-chewed off, and I couldn't tell if it was dead or alive.
"Hey! Are you okay?" I called out quickly.
At that moment, the Witch Power in my chest continued to burn.
I suddenly understood something. I placed my hand on the black dog's wounds, and as the Witch Power flowed out of me, the injuries on the black dog began to heal rapidly.
It became clear to me that this Big Black dog and I shared some kind of connection. That was why I felt the burning of the Witch Power in my chest and could find it.
The Big Black dog opened its eyes and glanced at me. Then, dark mist resembling flames began to rise from its body. The mist slowly dissipated, and eventually, the Big Black dog started to transform. It changed shape until it resembled a Pug!
It looked just like a pure black Chinese Rural Dog raised in the countryside!
Surprisingly, it wasn't ugly at all; it looked much better than when it resembled a Tibetan Mastiff.
I was taken aback. What was happening? Could it be a shapeshifting dog?
The dog stood up and wagged its tail at me. It was not large—just a medium-sized pure black dog—and then it licked me with its tongue.
I was taken aback and then reached out to pat its head.
The black dog immediately wagged its tail joyfully.
At that moment, the lights in the coffee shop in the distance turned on, and then Zhang Yuru walked out holding a stick.
Seeing Zhang Yuru, I waved at her.
When Zhang Yuru saw me and Yang Gou Dan, she paused for a moment before cursing, "Song Fei, are you suffering from nocturnal wandering? It's late at night, and you're here shooting guns. Did you really knock down a streetlight pole? You're something else!"
I quickly waved my hands and then pulled Yang Gou Dan up from the ground, saying, "Let's go inside first. Yang Gou Dan is exhausted; let's get him something to eat."
Zhang Yuru agreed.
I tidied up the thirty-six gold coins and then took the black dog into the coffee shop.
After briefly explaining the situation to Zhang Yuru, I looked at the black dog and asked, "How did you end up here? Is it because that Black Lizard wants to kill me?"
The black dog nodded and then lay on the table to eat roasted meat. It devoured a large plate of it in just a few bites, showing no intention of acknowledging me anymore.
Yang Gou Dan pushed the black dog's head away in disgust. "Can you leave me a couple of pieces? Buddha, I nearly starved myself saving you!"
The black dog glanced at Yang Gou Dan and silently nudged a plate of cake towards him with its snout.
Yang Gou Dan saw this and got angry. He shook his head at the dog and shouted, "Nonsense! Why aren't you eating cake? Buddha, I want meat! I want meat!"
Zhang Yuru stood by, completely stunned. She swallowed hard and looked at me, saying, "Are these two really a monk and a dog?"
I could only helplessly reply, "Could you please make some more roasted meat?"
"But he's a monk..." Zhang Yuru clearly hadn't interacted enough with Yang Gou Dan.
I chuckled and said, "Hurry up, hurry up! I underestimated this black dog’s appetite. Have you not eaten meat for thousands of years?"
The black dog nodded on the side, then stuck out its tongue and made a cute face at Zhang Yuru. When it opened its mouth and stuck out its tongue, it looked like a smiling face, very adorable.
Upon seeing this, Zhang Yuru immediately grabbed the dog's head and petted it a few times. "So cute! I'm going to make some now. Hey, Song Fei, can I have this dog? I've never seen such a smart dog before!"
"That won't do," I immediately refused.
Zhang Yuru replied, "Then just give me one of its pups. You have to agree to that."
"Fine, fine. Just go make your barbecue," I said helplessly as I pushed Zhang Yuru away.
