Gravekeeper stopped for a moment.
I also paused and looked down, only to find that the cat's corpse on the ground had vanished.
Without thinking much, I pointed ahead and said, "There’s a cave over there. If we go through it, we should be able to find Drug Trafficker. But this place feels a bit strange and eerie, so everyone should be cautious. Also, about that Iron Raccoon, if you encounter it, do not look into its eyes. Do not look! Just shoot it immediately. This is an order for everyone's safety, so don't think I'm being overly dramatic. Understood?"
Wen Fei nodded, "Understood! Everyone remember, shoot on sight if you see Iron Raccoon."
Just as we were about to move forward, Lindexi suddenly called out to us, "Commander! Wait… wait a moment!"
We turned to look at Lindexi. This honest police officer had always been quiet and reserved; it was unusual for him to speak up now.
Lindexi approached Wen Fei and said, "Commander, we… we can't go in there! Besides, those Drug Traffickers can't possibly be hiding in this place."
"Huh?" Wen Fei looked at Lindexi with curiosity. "How do you know? Have you been here before?"
"No, no." Lindexi quickly waved his hands, panic evident on his face. "Commander, of course I haven't been here! But I've heard stories from the older generation… they say there's a burial ground nearby, a very ominous place. No living person who enters ever comes back out. I've heard of it, but in the past few decades, no one has ever found this place. Now it seems… now it seems like this is it. Commander, we cannot go in!"
Wen Fei frowned; he was likely getting annoyed. First, I warned him about the dangers of Iron Raccoon, and now this officer was saying this was a burial ground they shouldn't enter. He probably thought all of this was just superstition.
Wen Fei said, "Lindexi, Comrade, you are a police officer, a servant of the people and a party member. How can you believe in these superstitions?"
Lindexi quickly shook his head. "Commander, it's not superstition! Listen to me. Before the 1980s, during the Vietnam War, there was a disturbance here as well. Many people fled into Mountain to escape from the rebels' pursuit. A few hundred people discovered this cave but didn't believe in omens and went inside anyway. To this day, none of those people have reappeared; it's not just a tale! Later on, over a hundred Vietnamese soldiers escaped here with guns; they were ruthless and also disappeared into the mountains while trying to evade the People's Liberation Army's pursuit. Commander, this is no joke!"
After hearing this, Wen Fei hesitated a bit.
I stepped forward and said, "Professor Wen, it's better to believe in such things than to dismiss them entirely. I suggest we do this: since we don’t really know what lies beyond that cave or if there are even any Drug Traffickers inside, let's send in the Police Dog first to sniff for any traces of drugs. If it detects anything, we can proceed; if not, then we should just leave."
"Alright!" Upon hearing my suggestion, Wen Fei immediately agreed.
The three Police Dog trainers crouched down, patting the heads of the three Police Dogs, then let them sniff a Unique Substance. In an instant, the three German Shepherd Police Dogs dashed forward.
Heizi squatted beside me, not moving.
I certainly didn't want Heizi to run out alone. If it encountered a ghost, that would be fine; Heizi wasn't afraid. But if it ran into that Iron Raccoon from this morning, without me there, Heizi would be doomed! Earlier, Heizi had clashed with that Iron Raccoon and ended up with several wounds. If it faced the Iron Raccoon alone, it wouldn't be able to outrun or overpower it—there was no doubt it would be in serious trouble.
The three Police Dogs quickly darted into the cave ahead and disappeared from sight.
A chilling aura enveloped us from the cave.
Wen Fei stood there, smoking a cigarette. Smoking was prohibited here, but at this moment, no one cared about such details, and no one dared to stop Wen Fei.
After taking a couple of puffs, Wen Fei frowned and said, "We should have searched this mountain peak already. Li Squad Leader, have we been here before?"
"Reporting to Commander! We did search this mountain peak, but we didn't find this cave," a soldier replied.
Wen Fei nodded and looked at Lindexi. "No one in your area has discovered this cave?"
Lindexi wiped the sweat from his forehead and said, "Reporting to Commander, there aren't many people in our town, and more than half are from the Lahu Ethnic Group. They are quite superstitious about mountain spirits. Plus, there have always been rumors that this mountain shouldn't be desecrated, so they avoid coming up here. As for us Han People, it seems no one has discovered it either. People have lived here for many years, and in the past decade or so, I rarely hear of anyone going missing around here."
Wen Fei nodded and didn't say anything further.
I glanced at the cave entrance; it felt eerie here. Honestly, if it weren't for Heizi leading the way, we might never have reached this place.
As we waited, suddenly a howl echoed from the cave followed by several dog yelps.
The three dog trainers immediately became anxious and turned to run toward their dogs. To them, the Police Dogs were like family; of course they were worried.
"Come back!" Wen Fei shouted as he extinguished his cigarette. "Maintain formation and protect Mr. Song and Ms. Zhang. We're going in!"
I grabbed my Glock and ran while saying, "Everyone remember: keep an eye on the Iron Raccoon! Do not look into its eyes—just shoot! Remember! It's very important! Heizi, run ahead and stop to alert us if you encounter danger!"
"Heizi" called out and then darted ahead of us. At that moment, I couldn't think too much; damn it, even if this "Iron Raccoon" had truly become a spirit, we had to take it down!
We rushed toward the cave. It was dark and eerie inside, not very long—just over two hundred meters. As we passed through the cave, a layer of white mist floated around. This was normal; the humidity here was heavy, and the fog never dissipated throughout the year.
However, it obstructed our vision, making it hard to see far ahead.
At that moment, "Heizi" was still running in front of us. We followed "Heizi" through the cave, and the path began to grow rugged and uneven, sloping downward—it must be a valley.
I looked up but couldn’t see the sun; it was obscured by the mist. The sunlight refracted through those mist particles, creating a hazy scene.
I felt uneasy without the sun; it made me anxious.
But this wasn’t the time to stop. Three police dogs had encountered misfortune; we needed to hurry over.
“Woof!”
"Heizi" barked.
Our pace slowed down, and then we heard police dogs whimpering. We rushed over and found a gruesome sight—blood and flesh scattered everywhere. Three police dogs lay on the ground; two had their bellies ripped open, and one had a bloody hole in its chest.
The three dog handlers suddenly knelt on the ground and crawled toward their fallen companions.
I took a deep breath—three police dogs! All three had been torn apart; it had to be that "Iron Raccoon"!
A soldier approached to examine the injuries of the police dogs. Then he walked over to "Wen Fei," first glancing at me before saying, “Commander, it was indeed an animal attack—by a feline species. Just like Mr. Song's case; it must be that 'Iron Raccoon.'”
"Wen Fei" squinted his eyes and nodded. “Take the police dogs back; we’re returning.”
Just as we were about to head back, one of the dog handlers suddenly shouted, “Commander.”
“What is it?” "Wen Fei" turned around.
"That's Unique Substance!" The dog trainer suddenly stood up. "Commander, Big Strong has found Unique Substance! Look at its chin; this is what Big Strong discovered!"
Big Strong was his dog.
As soon as Wen Fei heard this, he immediately walked over. He waved his hand, and two Narcotics Officers followed him to sniff around. The two Narcotics Officers perked up. "Yes, Commander, it is indeed Unique Substance, and the purity is very high! This dog has definitely found Unique Substance and even touched it with its chin; it's trying to alert us."
"Good boy." The dog trainer hugged the lifeless body of the Police Dog and began to cry again.
Although his sobbing was quite annoying, at that moment, I couldn't bring myself to be irritated; I knew he was genuinely heartbroken.
I patted Heizi on the head.
Wen Fei snapped back to attention. "Form up! Remember, if you see Iron Raccoon, shoot on sight! No questions asked! Mr. Song, your dog needs to lead the way; let's find out where these Police Dogs discovered the Unique Substance."
I nodded and took Heizi over to the side of the Police Dog, allowing Heizi to sniff the scent of the Unique Substance.
Heizi whined in protest, clearly unwilling to smell it; it seemed that it found the scent of Unique Substance quite unpleasant.
I patted Heizi's head and said, "Alright, Heizi, if you find it, you'll get a chicken leg when we get back. Hurry up and search; if we locate the Unique Substance, we can go home for that chicken leg."
"Woof..." Heizi responded affirmatively and then stood up, sniffing around before slowly running in a particular direction.
The path taken by the Police Dog would surely leave traces of the scent of Unique Substance, along with its own scent from just moments ago. This would be easy for Heizi to distinguish.
We formed up, all armed and ready, maintaining a combat stance as we followed behind Heizi.
After walking for several hundred meters, Heizi stopped and sat down.
The white mist ahead obscured our view; we could only see a few meters ahead, beyond which everything became unclear.
Two Narcotics Officers moved forward a few more meters when suddenly they shouted and quickly retreated.
"What happened?" Wen Fei furrowed his brow.
"Corpses! It's all... corpses," one of the Narcotics Officers said, struggling to speak while holding his gun.
Upon hearing the officer's words, I felt a sense of foreboding. I took a couple of steps forward, and after a few more, I reached the edge of a Valley. Standing there, my view suddenly became much clearer, mainly because the fog ahead had lessened significantly.
I looked ahead, and even I couldn't help but take a deep breath and step back!
Before me lay a Valley, densely populated with countless Corpses! Some of these bodies stood upright, others leaned against trees, and some lay in coffins, filling the entire Valley with thousands of corpses!
I inhaled sharply, "Corpse Raising Ground!"
