Gravekeeper took off running to the left.
I followed along with Zhang Yuru and Li Squad Leader.
Every few dozen meters, Heizi would stop to sniff the air before continuing on. We passed through a narrow mountain gap on the left.
Once through the gap, we could hear the sound of water, and the surrounding mist had lessened significantly, revealing an even more beautiful landscape.
After running for over two thousand meters, Heizi came to a halt.
I instinctively tightened my grip on my gun and moved forward. More and more corpses of wildcats began to appear; some stray cats had died not long ago, their blood drained and flesh from their chests eaten away. The expressions on their faces were filled with terror.
Heizi started searching more carefully, sniffing around before leading us across a river.
At that moment, some stray cats began to run across the ground. Some of them were still unaware of the danger, thinking this place was safe for play and filled with food.
I let out a sigh of relief. "It seems Flower Girl is still alive."
"To feed Iron Raccoon, they’ve been capturing stray cats from all over the country and releasing them into this Valley for Iron Raccoon to hunt and drain. That's truly cruel," Li Squad Leader remarked.
“Flower Girl!” Zhang Yuru suddenly called out.
“Don’t shout.”
I quickly stopped Zhang Yuru. “Don’t shout; we don’t want to attract that Iron Raccoon. Let’s have Heizi find her.”
Heizi sniffed around on the ground and then entered a thicket. Beyond that thicket was a small lake with an island in the middle. From a distance, I could see several cats sleeping on it.
The island was about ten meters from the shore, not very large—roughly the size of a house.
Li Squad Leader handed me a pair of binoculars. “Take a look and see if that cat is on the island.”
I picked up the telescope, and its clarity exceeded my expectations. I could see the beards of several cats clearly through it. I quickly locked onto the Flower Girl, a large Tabby Cat lying on top, her expression quite forlorn.
I lowered the telescope and said, "Yes, it's right up there; that biggest Tabby Cat is the one. But how did these cats jump over? It's more than ten meters away. Can these cats swim?"
Li Squad Leader took a look, then dipped his finger into the lake water and tasted it. He said, "This lake is an inland lake, connected to the sea. It must have been low tide when those cats ran over. Now that the tide has come in, they can't get back."
I gave a thumbs-up to Li Squad Leader.
He said, "You all wait here on the shore; I'll go catch that cat." Without further ado, Li Squad Leader pulled out a transparent raincoat from his pocket, put it on, and jumped into the water.
Li Squad Leader swam swiftly; in just a few splashes, he covered the distance of over ten meters.
Just as he was about to reach the shore, suddenly a black shadow lunged at him from the water's surface.
"Watch out!" I shouted in alarm, trying to warn Li Squad Leader.
Hearing my shout, Li Squad Leader rolled in the water and spotted the black shadow.
With a splash, the shadow leaped out of the water and lunged at him. At that moment, I finally got a clear look—it was a monster! A bizarre-looking black fish over two meters long, with an enormous head like that of a teenager. When it opened its mouth, jagged teeth were revealed.
The monstrous fish aimed to bite down on Li Squad Leader.
I was terrified and raised my Glock, firing into the water.
"Bang!"
The shot pierced through the fish's tail. I hesitated to shoot at its head for fear of hitting Li Squad Leader.
In the water, after taking my shot, the fish became even more ferocious. It opened its mouth wide and lunged at Li Squad Leader. At that moment, he pressed both hands against the fish's head and pulled something from his waist, tossing it into its mouth. Then he pushed down hard and used the force of the fish's head to leap onto the island.
I stood on the shore with my mouth agape in astonishment.
"That was so cool!" Zhang Yuru murmured from beside me.
I turned to Zhang Yuru, who was gazing dreamily at Li Squad Leader's figure.
I was speechless, but I couldn't help but admire him. Li Squad Leader was indeed impressive; no wonder Wen Fei felt at ease letting him follow me alone. It seemed he was a legendary soldier after all.
Suddenly, a fish in the lake exploded into two halves, and blood immediately stained the surrounding water a vivid red.
"What the hell!" I exclaimed, astonished that he could instantly take down a creature comparable to a shark in the water. Impressive!
Li Squad Leader didn't even glance at the fish's fate. After getting out of the water, he lunged toward Flower Girl.
Flower Girl didn't resist; Li Squad Leader stuffed her into a bag and sealed it shut before jumping back into the water, swimming toward the shore.
Once on land, Li Squad Leader opened the bag, and Flower Girl jumped out. She saw me and wagged her tail, clearly recognizing me.
I picked up Flower Girl and gave Li Squad Leader a thumbs-up. "You're amazing."
Li Squad Leader chuckled briefly before returning to his serious demeanor. "This is a Wolf Fish, primarily found around Japan. I never expected to encounter one here."
"Wow, that fish is really ugly," I remarked.
Li Squad Leader nodded. "It's an ancient deep-sea fish, so its appearance is naturally strange. However, they don't usually grow this large. A few years ago, after that tsunami hit and the Nuclear Power Plant in Japan was damaged by the earthquake, many Wolf Fish in the area mutated and started growing bigger."
I sighed in relief. "So that's what happened. I thought some monster had appeared out of nowhere..."
As we were talking, suddenly, what had been a clear sky turned ominous with dark clouds gathering. I looked up to see a swirling black cloud forming in the distance.
Zhang Yuru muttered, "What's going on? This feels similar to that incident with Face Mask at the crematorium."
As soon as she said that, I jumped up. "This is bad! They are in danger; we need to hurry back!"
Upon hearing this, Li Squad Leader became anxious, tearing off his plastic bag clothing and sprinting back.
I quickly called for Heizi to lead the way ahead, and then I caught up, saying, "Li Squad Leader, don't rush. Running too fast can easily lead to the Wall of Ghosts. Let's follow Heizi."
Li Squad Leader nodded, saying, "Commander, you must be careful."
I reassured him, "Don't worry. It's broad daylight; those Zombies can't survive in this light. Even if the enemy can use corpse gas to obscure the sunlight, they can't control those Zombies. Besides, Professor Wen has plenty of people around him; nothing will happen."
Heizi slowed down as it retraced our steps. The distance wasn't long; we crossed that narrow mountain gap in about ten minutes.
Beyond the mountain gap, the entire world turned into a gray haze. It was difficult to see anything beyond five meters.
I sensed something was wrong; I hadn't expected the enemy to use ghostly techniques in broad daylight.
Heizi's pace decreased as it sniffed around, then led the three of us back to the corpse-raising valley! Inside the Valley, thick smoke billowed. Many bodies had been burned to ashes, but there were still more that had only partially burned, with drugs scattered all over the ground.
We returned to the Valley. I looked up; a massive dark cloud swirled above us, blocking out any sunlight. Everything felt ominous.
Inside the Valley, aside from the burning corpses, there was no one else!
Where were Wen Fei and his team?
"Where are they?" Li Squad Leader asked anxiously.
"Shh..." I urged Li Squad Leader not to speak loudly.
Li Squad Leader anxiously scanned the surroundings but found no signs of anyone.
I crouched down and patted Heizi on the head.
Heizi understood my intention and lowered its head to sniff around on the ground before starting to walk along a sloping path.
"Keep up," I whispered.
Zhang Yuru stayed close beside me, seemingly unafraid, likely due to her confidence in me.
Li Squad Leader was more anxious. He whispered, "Mr. Song, why did they suddenly leave? Also, this isn't the way back; why are they heading this direction? Your dog’s nose isn’t malfunctioning, is it?"
"Don't worry. Panic leads to chaos, Li Squad Leader. You need to stay calm to avoid mistakes," I replied.
Li Squad Leader took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry; I was a bit anxious just now."
I nodded and whispered, "I don't know why they're coming this way either, but Heizi won't lead us astray. We just need to follow him... Heizi, pick up the pace."
Heizi lowered his head and sniffed around as he guided us diagonally through the Corpse Raising Ground.
