The road was unfamiliar, and I couldn't understand why Wen Fei and the others were taking this path; it certainly wasn't the way back!
The mountain trail grew steeper, and after climbing for about a hundred meters, the terrain leveled out. In the distance, a dark figure was moving forward.
"It's them, Commander," Li Squad Leader said, ready to rush ahead.
"Come back!" I grabbed Li Squad Leader, "Don't be hasty; something feels off. Let's follow them for now."
Li Squad Leader nodded.
At that moment, Heizi seemed reluctant to move forward, clearly frightened.
I patted Heizi's head. To be honest, like me, Heizi wasn't afraid of zombies or evil spirits; the only thing that truly scared it was that Iron Raccoon.
The three of us and one dog quietly followed, running for over thirty meters until we finally caught up with the dark figure. Now that we were closer, we could see clearly—it was indeed Wen Fei and the others.
However, in front of them was a child who was bouncing along happily. Wen Fei followed closely behind the child.
Li Squad Leader beside me let out a sigh of relief and opened his mouth to shout.
I quickly stepped forward and covered Li Squad Leader's mouth tightly. I pressed down so hard that my hand began to tremble.
Li Squad Leader looked at me in confusion.
I hurriedly shook my head, keeping my mouth shut, and placed a finger over my lips to signal Li Squad Leader to stay quiet.
Li Squad Leader nodded to indicate understanding.
My fingers were trembling slightly as I pointed to the Li Squad Leader's waist where the telescope was, then made a gesture, signaling him to use the Infrared Telescope to take a look.
The equipment carried by these Narcotics Officers was quite advanced. For instance, this telescope could switch from a normal daylight mode to an infrared assistance mode at night. Infrared sensing works on the principle of thermal imaging, utilizing temperature differences in the surroundings to create an image. For example, the human body is around thirty-seven degrees Celsius, while a rock matches the ambient temperature. Thus, with the Infrared Telescope, one could see a person even in darkness; if that person were hiding behind a rock, they could still be detected.
Li Squad Leader looked at me with confusion before picking up the telescope.
At that moment, the light was dimming. I instructed Li Squad Leader to switch the telescope to infrared mode. He fiddled with it for a moment and then looked through it. Initially hesitant and unsure of my intentions, it didn't take long for Li Squad Leader's own hands to start trembling.
Li Squad Leader was a robust man, a true soldier; there were few things that could make his hands shake.
I took a deep breath, knowing I wasn't mistaken! The child leading Wen Fei and the others forward was not a child at all but rather the Iron Raccoon!
I understood well the terrifying nature of such creatures. A young Fox Spirit from years ago could easily have killed me, playing me like a fool. As for something like a Turtle Spirit, just one strand of its soul could spell my doom! Similarly, this Iron Raccoon was definitely not simple!
If I hadn't noticed that the child was limping while bouncing along, I might have been fooled myself!
That Iron Raccoon had been injured by my Glock before; the bullet had grazed its leg!
Now this child bounced and moved like a weasel, and with an injured leg, it made me realize something was off. That's why I suspected this child wasn't human, which is why I had Li Squad Leader use the Infrared Telescope! The Infrared Telescope operates on thermal imaging principles and cannot be deceived!
"What’s going on?" Zhang Yuru asked us curiously.
Taking a deep breath, Li Squad Leader finally steadied his trembling hand. He lowered the telescope and said, "It... it's a Big Cat, it's that Iron Raccoon. Mr. Song, what should we do now?"
"Kill it!" I looked at Li Squad Leader. "Aim for the head! Shoot that Iron Raccoon; it's not a demon yet, so it can definitely be killed."
"Got it!"
Li Squad Leader gritted his teeth and pulled out his handgun from his waist. After a moment of thought, he shook his head and drew a Desert Eagle instead. He crouched down, holding the gun with both hands, arms extended flat. He aimed, focused, and took a full three seconds to line up the shot!
I was starting to feel impatient.
"Bang!"
A gunshot rang out.
I could see sweat glistening on the tip of Li Squad Leader's nose.
With that gunshot, Li Squad Leader sprang forward like a leopard, his speed quick as if he were a sprinter. No matter how fast he ran, his arms held the Desert Eagle steady, unwavering.
The bullet whistled toward the child.
The child seemed to sense something and suddenly dropped to the ground.
"Thump thump thump!"
Li Squad Leader fired three more shots in quick succession. By the time he pulled the trigger for the third time, he had already reached the back of the group, less than ten meters away from the child.
The furious bullets from the Desert Eagle struck the child, instantly turning their body into a bloody mess!
"What are you doing! Bastard!" Wen Fei shouted.
Li Squad Leader ignored him and continued to aim his gun at the child.
I rushed over, and when I saw that the child on the ground was already motionless, I breathed a sigh of relief and hugged Li Squad Leader's arm, saying, "It's okay, it's okay, he's already dead."
The Desert Eagle in Li Squad Leader's hand fell to the ground.
I quickly picked it up.
After the gun dropped, Li Squad Leader suddenly slumped to the ground, gasping for air. Clearly, he was terrified.
Wen Fei approached us, visibly angry. "What are you doing! Why did you suddenly open fire! Why did you kill this child!"
"Commander, he... he isn't a child," Li Squad Leader replied from the ground.
"Nonsense! It was about to rain heavily, and suddenly black mist appeared in the valley. We couldn't find our way out. If that child hadn't shown up, we would have died in the valley! Have you lost your mind?" Wen Fei shouted.
I turned to Wen Fei and said, "Professor Wen, this really isn't a child. If you don't believe me, come over and see." I walked over to the child's body.
Suppressing my fear and disgust, I flipped the body over.
As the body turned, a cat-like face was revealed! It was Iron Raccoon's face! The corpse was merely wearing a child's clothing.
"Ah!" Wen Fei gasped softly.
At that moment, the other Narcotics Officers huddled together, fear evident on their faces as they gasped for breath and looked at me.
I said, "This Iron Raccoon is about to become a formidable entity; it can transform into a human form. I only warned you not to look into its eyes, but I never expected this creature could actually take on a human appearance. It brought you here, likely to lead you to this very spot."
As I spoke, I took out the Golden Light Talisman and tossed it forward.
The Golden Light Talisman illuminated, and the black mist ahead began to dissipate. Once the mist cleared, I saw a cliff just five meters away!
If it hadn't been for me and Li Squad Leader arriving in time, in another half minute, the Iron Raccoon would have led Wen Fei and the others right off that cliff! If they fell, even if they didn't die from the fall, they would surely be crippled. At that point, they would have been at the mercy of the Iron Raccoon and the other Drug Traffickers!
A chilling wind swept through.
Everyone instinctively shrank their necks and turned their gazes toward me.
I knew that the strangeness of the situation had surpassed their imagination, and they felt utterly helpless.
I looked up at the dark clouds above and said, "Although our opponent is powerful, it is still daytime, right in the middle of noon. It can't do anything to us now. We need to get out of this Corpse Raising Ground first. By the way, why haven't those corpses burned?"
Wen Fei shook his head. "These corpses are quite peculiar; they're cold and eerie. When we poured a bottle of burning oil on them and lit it, the flames would extinguish after a while. We didn't bring enough burning oil to incinerate all these corpses. So I thought we should retreat first. Once we reach a place where our phones can get a signal, I'll call for flame-thrower soldiers to come and deal with them."
I nodded; I had anticipated that these corpses wouldn't burn easily. This was a shadowy area where the Chill of Darkness gathered, making fire ineffective as if it were lacking oxygen.
I led the team back along our path.
The darkness above began to recede slightly.
Returning to the Valley of the Corpse Raising Ground, I felt a chill as we passed through the dense throng of corpses. With more than ten of us walking closely together, it felt a bit safer.
Wen Fei walked beside me and said, "That was strange. I remember it being quite easy when we came down, but before that Iron Raccoon Spirit appeared, everything turned dark. When we tried to go back up, we couldn't find our way."
I replied, "It's an illusion technique, commonly known as the Wall of Ghosts. I just don't know if it was the corpses, that Iron Raccoon Spirit, or that old woman who cast it."
Wen Fei opened his mouth but decided not to say anything further.
Heizi led the way ahead. I wasn't worried about the Wall of Ghosts at all; as long as Heizi was with us, we could handle anything that wasn't a Demon like the Iron Raccoon.
We navigated through the dense corpses until we reached the edge, where a mist hung in the air. Ahead lay a field of black thorns, long and sharp, glistening ominously.
Heizi didn't stop and continued toward the thorns.
"Your dog..." Li Squad Leader began.
"It's fine," I reassured him.
At that moment, Heizi sniffed at the thorns and suddenly, with a rustling sound, the dark thorns parted completely. The surrounding scenery rippled for a moment before transforming into an upward slope—the very path we had taken before.
Everyone around us breathed a sigh of relief, but I remained tense. Something told me it wouldn't be this simple. The ability to create such dense shadows was not something an ordinary person could possess.
"Heizi, don't go so fast," I cautioned, fearing for its safety. Although Heizi had been formidable in the past, ever since being bitten by Yin Yao, it had become just an ordinary farm dog.
As Heizi drew closer, our group moved upward toward the Valley.
As I walked just three meters, the Li Squad Leader suddenly shouted in alarm.
Then the sound of gunfire erupted, a rapid "tat-tat-tat-tat" from submachine guns.
"Find cover!" Li Squad Leader yelled, turning to grab Wen Fei.
Wen Fei shouted back, "Protect Song Fei."
The soldiers around us ducked down and began to retreat.
I quickly pulled Heizi close, fearing that Heizi would get shot since he was at the front.
"Heart!" Li Squad Leader cried out, suddenly tackling me to the ground from behind. Then I heard the sound of a bullet embedding itself in flesh; it had struck Li Squad Leader's arm.
