I couldn't help but chuckle at the audacity of someone daring to provoke Su Mingyue. Honestly, if that woman were to lose her temper, I wouldn't be surprised if she twisted someone's head off.
The Tall White-faced Man stood there, stunned for three seconds, clearly taken aback by a woman rejecting him so decisively.
I nudged the guy, "What are you still doing here? Are you trying to be a third wheel? Get lost."
He immediately grabbed my shoulder.
At that moment, Heizi, who had been eating under the table, suddenly darted out and bit the man's leg.
"Ah!" the white-faced man yelped.
"Gao Fei, what are you doing?" someone shouted from a distance. "Hurry up and come over; it's time to leave."
"Haha, Brother Fei failed to pick up a girl and got bitten by her dog."
"Haha, even Brother Fei has his off days."
A few people in the distance laughed heartily, clearly accustomed to Gao Fei's attempts at flirting with women.
Gao Fei quickly stepped back, visibly frightened of Heizi, and without saying anything more, turned to leave.
Heizi resumed eating his food.
Su Mingyue finished a bowl of rice, wiped her lips, glanced at Heizi, and asked, "Is this dog yours?"
I nodded. "You know it too."
"Oh?" Su Mingyue glanced at me, then frowned slightly. "Is that the fire dog you mentioned?"
I nodded. "I was bitten by Yin Yao, and somehow I turned into a Chinese Rural Dog. Last time I almost died, and it didn't change back, so it probably can't."
Su Mingyue put down her chopsticks. "Well, that's not too bad."
"Yeah, I suppose so."
We finished our meal and got into the car to leave.
The moon was full, especially in this mountainous area; it appeared particularly large and round, like a basin.
The moonlight cast a deep glow on the road ahead, making it seem a bit eerie.
Su Mingyue got into the car. "Think carefully; once we go in this time, we might not come back out. If you have any last words, it's best to say them now and send them to your email because once we go in, there won't be any network or even phone signal."
"Don't worry; I'm prepared for this. It's time to settle things with history," I replied.
Su Mingyue's lips curled into a slight smile, looking beautiful as she pressed the accelerator, and the car wove through the forest.
I took out my compass and began recording directions. Although I was indeed ready for the possibility of not returning, if by chance I survived but got lost and ended up trapped here, that would be unfortunate.
There were no roads left; it was all overgrown with weeds and forest. Fortunately, the Dongfeng Warrior was a true four-wheel-drive vehicle, so I didn't have to worry too much.
After driving for more than half an hour, we were almost at a point where there were no paths left.
At that moment, three Toyota Prados appeared in the headlights ahead.
Three Prados were parked there, and it was unclear what they were doing.
Su Mingyue pressed the horn.
"Help! Help!" someone shouted from inside the car.
Su Mingyue frowned and glanced at her watch.
I knew Su Mingyue was in a hurry, so I pushed open the car door and jumped out.
"Thump thump thump." Someone was desperately banging on the window from inside the car.
I walked over to take a look and chuckled; it was none other than Gao Fei.
Just as I was about to say something, three people approached. They were all middle-aged men, part of Gao Fei's group. They surrounded me, their eyes revealing a sinister expression.
I looked at them and said, "Hey, buddy, what's going on? I'm just passing by, no need to be nervous."
"Heh heh, since it's a robbery, let's rob you too, along with your pretty girl," one of the men grinned.
Another man kicked him and said, "Stop talking nonsense. We're just here for money. If we want women, we'll take the money and go to a nightclub ourselves. Don't cause any trouble."
"Hey, big brother, I was just joking," the man muttered.
The three of them brandished knives, demanding that I hand over my valuables.
I took a step back; of course, I didn't make a move. With Su Mingyue around, it wasn't my place to intervene.
At that moment, Su Mingyue stepped out of the vehicle, her brow furrowing as she looked at the three men in front of her.
The leader hesitated for a moment, as if sensing something. He took a step back and said, "You two go ahead; we three brothers won't disturb you."
Su Mingyue let out a light snort. "Are you mercenaries?"
The leader was taken aback, staring at Su Mingyue. "Who are you?"
Su Mingyue pointed at the vehicle without answering his question and asked, "What’s going on here?"
"Hey, you're being too arrogant," another man said, brandishing a dagger at Su Mingyue. "Our boss is giving you face, and you..."
"Bang!"
In an instant, Su Mingyue moved. Before I could even comprehend what had happened, that man was sent flying, landing directly on top of the nearby Prado.
Su Mingyue turned to the leader and said, "Tell me what’s going on."
The leader was stunned for a moment and swallowed hard. He knew he was no match for Su Mingyue and quickly spoke up. "We three brothers were indeed mercenaries, but we got exposed and are being hunted by the National Security Forces of China. We had no choice but to hide here. Later, we started acting as hikers to scam some money. Please forgive us, Miss Heroine; although we were wrong, we were just trying to make a living. The people we’ve targeted are all rich kids who enjoy off-roading; we absolutely won’t..."
"Cut the crap. Ever heard of wild men?" Su Mingyue wasn't interested in their excuses about rich kids.
"Huh?" The leader was taken aback and then nodded, pointing inside. "I... I've heard of them."
"Have you seen them?" Su Mingyue pressed.
The leader shook his head and then touched his lips. "Although I haven't seen them, the three of us often pass through here and have come across some unusual things, like human footprints and some obviously man-made structures."
"Where did you see it?" Su Mingyue asked.
The leader pointed into the distance. "That place, but we have to cross a gorge; the vehicle can't get through."
"Okay!"
Su Mingyue turned and walked towards the Dongfeng Warrior vehicle.
The leader let out a sigh of relief.
At that moment, inside the Prado, Gao Fei and his companions were desperately banging on the car windows.
I glanced over and then pointed at the leader. "Remember, don't cause any fatalities."
"Yes, yes, don't worry. Although we're robbers, we really won't go too far. We know our limits." The leader quickly bowed and nodded at me, being very polite.
Of course, I had no intention of rescuing Gao Fei. I got into the vehicle, and then Su Mingyue drove us forward. As for saving anyone, neither of us cared; first, Gao Fei and his friends were indeed very wealthy; second, coming to a place like this meant being prepared for various situations, including being kidnapped; third, well, it might be good for these rich kids to learn a lesson.
Su Mingyue drove fast, and the vehicle bounced up and down, making my head ache.
Just as I was about to lose my patience, suddenly, with a screech, the car came to a stop.
I was taken aback for a moment, rubbed my eyes, and looked ahead. The area was now densely packed with trees; the vehicle simply couldn't proceed.
"Get out; we'll walk from here." Su Mingyue said as she slung a large backpack over her shoulder and jumped out of the car.
I jumped out with Heizi as well. I carried the bag that contained a Glock and a Desert Eagle—equipment I had prepared before coming here. Of course, if I had known we were heading to Shennongjia, I probably wouldn't have brought the Glock; it would have been better to bring just the Desert Eagle and some grenades because here, handguns were far too weak against those animals.
I carried my bag and followed closely behind Su Mingyue, running quickly.
Su Mingyue was dressed in loose canvas clothing, her steps light and agile. As she ran, she glanced around. After about half an hour, she came to a stop.
I halted as well and saw that ahead of us was a fairly large gorge, filled with trees. Standing at the edge and looking down, the entire gorge appeared like a sleeping giant under the moonlight.
"Let's go down and cross this gorge," Su Mingyue said, then leaped off into the depths below, which were over ten meters down.
I stared in disbelief; I certainly didn't have Su Mingyue's abilities. I had no choice but to take out the rope I had prepared, tie it to a tree, and slowly lower myself down.
Once I reached the bottom, Su Mingyue and I crossed the gorge, then began to climb up again. This time, I struggled on my own. Fortunately, Su Mingyue was there; she jumped up to the cliff first and secured the rope for me. I climbed along the rope to get across.
By this point, I was panting heavily. However, Su Mingyue, carrying a large pack, seemed completely unfazed.
"Calm down," Su Mingyue said.
"We're not here to look for wild people, are we?" I gasped for breath.
"Not just any wild people," Su Mingyue replied quietly as she surveyed the surroundings. "I can't be sure yet, but it's highly likely..."
Suddenly, a figure darted past in the distance, causing the trees nearby to sway slightly.
"Wait here for me," Su Mingyue instructed before she suddenly took off into the air, sprinting toward the figure in the distance. The purpose of her pack was unclear, but she seemed like someone possessed as she chased after that silhouette.
I was utterly speechless. I had no idea who Su Mingyue was or why she had brought me here. Thankfully, I was certain that she meant me no harm.
However, this damn woman should at least make it clear what she came here to do!
I sat on the ground in frustration, casually pulling out my Desert Eagle for protection.
At that moment, I heard footsteps approaching rapidly from a distance, getting closer to me...
