Hearing the sound, Heizi suddenly sprang in front of me, alert and crouched low.
I heard it too, quickly grabbing my Desert Eagle and aiming it toward the noise.
The sound grew louder, and I swallowed hard. Damn it, it was definitely footsteps—no doubt about it, they had to be wild men! After all, in this desolate mountain area, especially at night, who else would be running through the woods?
I sensed something was off and cursed Su Mingyue for being such a fool, getting us lured away by wild men!
Just as I was thinking this, the trees ahead rustled violently, and a figure burst out.
I immediately aimed my Desert Eagle at the person.
"Ah!"
The person screamed—it was a woman.
I was momentarily stunned but quickly lowered my gun.
At that moment, two men came rushing up behind her—two men and one woman—all staring at me.
I stared back at them.
"You scared me to death! Run, run!" The woman shouted as she dashed toward me.
Heizi growled at them, baring its teeth.
The woman jumped back in fright.
I quickly called out to Heizi, "Hey, what's going on?"
The three of them rushed over to me, panting heavily. One of the long-haired men exclaimed, "Friend, behind us... mice, mice! It's... it's terrifying."
"Uh... mice?" I almost laughed out loud.
These three were so afraid of mice, yet they dared to come here in the middle of the night. That was quite strange.
The woman waved her hand dismissively. Her voice was pleasant and she spoke quickly; even though she was out of breath, her words were clear and fast. "Not ordinary mice, but big ones—lots of them—super big mice, bigger than cats."
I rubbed my nose and looked at the woman. She was around thirty years old and quite attractive. Of course, that wasn't the reason I was staring at her; it was because she looked incredibly familiar—strikingly familiar!
I stared at her and said, "You... you’re that... that CCTV host named Yang Jing, right?"
Yang Jing rolled her eyes at me and patted her chest. "There aren't many people who wouldn't recognize me. Except for those who don't even watch the Spring Festival Gala."
I chuckled. Yang Jing wasn't being arrogant; it was a fact. She had hosted the Spring Festival Gala twice, and everyone in the country knew her—no exaggeration there. Plus, she regularly hosted some very popular shows on CCTV, so she was genuinely well-known.
Next to Yang Jing stood a young man with a large backpack. He said, "Sister Yang, stop chatting and let’s hurry up; we’ll miss our chance soon."
This guy clearly sounded like a Northeastern guy.
I quickly added, "Mice are no big deal; no matter how big they are, I'm not afraid. I have a gun."
The Northeastern guy glanced at me and replied, "That won't help much. A bunch of mice bigger than rabbits? Unless you have a machine gun."
Just as I was about to respond, there was a sudden rustling sound.
Then a group of mice, as large as adult rabbits, came scurrying out.
I took a look and gasped; these mice were indeed huge! Damn it, they were truly monstrous rodents!
There were so many of them, at least a hundred, and in an instant, they surrounded us.
“Woof woof woof…” Heizi barked at the mice and slowly backed up, positioning himself in front of me.
I held my Desert Eagle, feeling a bit stunned. “What’s going on? Where did all these giant mice come from? Have they turned into something supernatural?”
Yang Jing replied, “We came here to shoot a feature program about wild men. We heard that some say wild men only appear on full moon nights, so we decided to come. There were a few others with us, but they didn’t want to cross that cliff and stayed behind. It was just me, my cameraman Liu, and the renowned explorer Mr. Qin Changling. While we were filming in a nearby forest, suddenly all these mice burst out. We ran away and ended up here.”
I swallowed hard. “How about we turn on the camera now? If we’re going to die, at least someone might find the footage later and remember us.”
“You’re something else… Alright, Liu, turn on the camera. It seems we might not escape today.” Yang Jing had a surprisingly good attitude about it, which made me like her even more. I had always thought she was a person of justice and straightforwardness when I saw her on TV, and it seemed she was just as admirable in real life.
At that moment, the long-haired Qin Changling spoke up, “Friend, do you have any other weapons?”
I nodded and pulled out another Glock.
Qin Changling took it from me. “Friend, even mice have leaders. We just need to find the leader mouse and kill it; the rest will surely scatter in chaos. That’s when we can make our escape.”
I quickly nodded. “Alright, that sounds good. My name is Song Fei.”
“Song Fei, what do you do? How come you have so many guns?” Yang Jing asked.
I hurriedly replied, “Let’s keep this part off the record; I don’t want to get caught.”
We all laughed, and with that laughter, the tension eased a bit.
Qin Changling, after all, was an experienced adventurer. In fact, the reason Yang Jing and Liu dared to come here in the middle of the night was because they trusted Qin Changling. They knew he was far more capable than that Bell who went on adventures with his crew.
Bell was a variety show personality, but Qin Changling was a true adventurer—low-key yet highly skilled.
Qin Changling glanced around and then said to me, "You shoot first. The rats will instinctively protect their leader, and then I'll take my shot."
I had no choice but to comply. I aimed at the swarm of rats and fired a shot.
The Desert Eagle could hardly be called a handgun; "hand cannon" would be a more fitting term.
With a loud bang, two rats were instantly turned into mush.
At that moment, Qin Changling suddenly leaped forward and fired three shots into the mass of rats.
Thump thump thump!
After those three shots, two more rats were sent flying.
Then, Qin Changling began to hiss repeatedly, followed by imitating the call of an eagle. His vocal skills were truly impressive; one moment he sounded like a snake, the next like an eagle—both enemies of the rats.
The surrounding giant rats immediately recoiled and turned to flee.
Seeing this unfold, I breathed a sigh of relief and felt a deep admiration for Qin Changling.
He continued to mimic the eagle's cry.
The mice had already turned and run far away.
Qin Changling stopped for a moment, then turned back and threw the gun in his hand to me. "We need to get out of here quickly. I have a feeling these mice are not normal. Let's go."
We all nodded, and even I didn't dare to wait for Su Mingyue any longer.
Just as we turned around, suddenly, a faint rustling sound of footsteps reached our ears. Then, hundreds of giant mice came rushing back, surrounding us once again. This time, their beady eyes glowed with a blood-red light.
"This is bad! These mice are going crazy!" Qin Changling exclaimed.
I could see it too; the eyes of these mice were definitely abnormal.
"Sister Yang, we're done for this time! I don't want to do this anymore! You wouldn't listen to me; I'm the last of three generations!" Liu sobbed loudly, his Northeast accent thick in his voice.
"Stop talking!" Yang Jing snapped.
I gripped the Desert Eagle tightly. "Let's not wait any longer. Mr. Qin, take the gun, and let's charge in one direction. Maybe we can escape."
"Alright!" Qin Changling had no other choice now but to fight back.
Heizi stayed close by my feet, whimpering softly. But despite its presence, the massive mice showed no fear.
The number of mice around us kept increasing, drawing closer and closer.
Just when we were prepared to fight to the death, a whistle sounded from a distance, followed by two figures sprinting toward us.
I turned my head to look over.
Two savages wearing clothes made of tree bark, with long disheveled hair and bamboo sticks in their hands ran over. The two savages made a sound of "oooh, oh, oh, oh" as they ran. My scalp was numb when I saw it. This was really enough. Before the mice were dealt with, we actually saw a savage. At this time, the huge rats around them, hearing the howls of the savages, began to slowly retreat, then retreat again, then squeaked, and all ran away.
