Soon after, Li Hong called Lu Mao and the others.
"How's the movie coming along?"
Lu Mao replied helplessly, "Boss, it’s impossible to finish it all at once, no matter how fast we go. You just called to rush me after only a short while; what do you expect me to do?"
"That kind of thinking won't work. We're not making a masterpiece here; we just need to throw something together. It doesn't have to be fancy. Get it done quickly; I want to see the rough cut by next week." Li Hong disregarded Lu Mao's complaints and continued giving orders.
On the other end of the line, Lu Mao's expression darkened as he found himself at a loss for words.
"If this keeps up, I’ll become one of the worst directors out there..." Lu Mao sighed in resignation.
Although he was somewhat displeased with Li Hong's interference in the film production, he accepted Li Hong's suggestions with a calm demeanor.
After removing the promotional expenses, he had only about a million left for filming. That amount was hardly enough for anything substantial, let alone making a decent film.
So even if Li Hong hadn't made that call, Lu Mao had already planned to cut corners.
Making a movie is all about participation.
What troubled Lu Mao even more than that were the performances of the actors.
Eastern Maiden and Roshifu were particularly frustrating, with expressions so dull they seemed almost brainless; acting was nonexistent.
Fortunately, the members of Soul Clan made things a bit easier for Lu Mao.
"Soulmate, try to look more natural!"
Wearing a wolf mask, Soulmate looked confused. How am I supposed to show expression while wearing this mask?
But he had to deliver; after all, he was an "experienced actor," and he still had some skills.
Before long, Soulmate adopted a deeply emotional expression and approached the flamboyant Eastern Maiden.
"Red Hat..."
Lu Mao had completely given up on the treatment. After all, his Boss only demanded speed, not quality, and he couldn't be bothered to fuss over the details.
At that moment, a young man from the Soul Clan, responsible for props in the production, rushed over to Lu Mao.
"Director, the Wolf Head Prop is broken again!"
"What?" Lu Mao exclaimed in shock.
The most important prop in this film was the wolf mask worn by the male lead, the Big Bad Wolf. If that thing was broken, what were they going to do?
Sensing Lu Mao's concern, the Prop Master proudly pulled out a plastic mask and said with a smile, "Director, we still have this one to make do with."
Lu Mao took a glance and nearly fell over.
The mask in that guy's hand was nothing more than a cheap toy mask you could find at amusement parks for a dollar, held together with rubber bands at the back.
"Can this thing work?" Lu Mao asked skeptically.
Even though he planned to cut corners, this was pushing it too far.
This kind of mask might fool some non-human creatures, but...
The Prop Master quickly produced a bag filled with similar masks and grinned as if he had struck gold. "Why not? Didn't Boss say so? Just don't treat the audience like humans. Look at this—I've got all these masks for just 100 bucks. That should be enough for our shoot."
Lu Mao hesitated. This was his debut work! If he messed it up, how would he ever face anyone again?
"Director, director! The villa has refused to rent to us for filming," another Prop Master rushed over with a distressed expression.
Lu Mao glared at the two of them, feeling like he could eat them alive.
"Isn't everything fine? Why are you suddenly backing out?"
The Prop Master looked confused, scratching the back of his head. "I don't know either. I went to discuss it with him, and he just kicked me out."
"What did you say?" Lu Mao asked incredulously.
"I just told him that our Sweet Potato Entertainment wanted to use his villa to shoot a movie and that he should leave," the Prop Master said nonchalantly.
Back when he was with the Soul Clan, he had always walked tall in the Dou Qi Continent; borrowing things from others was never something he had to do. Usually, they just took what they wanted!
Lu Mao was speechless.
He was seriously considering going on strike; where did these people come from? Couldn't they at least say a few polite words when asking to borrow something?
"Alright, go check if there are any other villas nearby that meet our requirements and talk to them," Lu Mao said helplessly.
Although he wanted nothing more than for these people to leave, Lu Mao forced himself to suppress that tempting thought. There was no choice; the entire crew relied on this bunch from the Soul Clan. If he kicked them out, he might as well quit himself.
"No need for that, Director. I just bought one. It’ll definitely work for filming."
What the hell!
At that moment, Lu Mao looked at the Prop Master with newfound respect. He bought a villa? Just like that?
Until he saw the guy pull out a box of LEGO bricks.
"Director, look how realistic this is! Plus, it can be reused—much more reliable than renting a villa."
"It’s quite reliable..." Lu Mao chuckled dryly.
Little did he know, at that moment, Lu Mao was even more determined to finish this film and leave.
If this kind of film got released, he would be utterly humiliated.
Let’s not even mention that; did they really think the audience was that naive with this Block Villa?
"Director, are you satisfied? If you are, I’ll go set up the scene. I’m telling you, the seller said it can stack up to 0.5 meters high, which should be more than enough."
"Do whatever you want..." Lu Mao slumped onto the grass, completely uninterested in saying much more.
With permission granted, the Soul Clan's Prop Master hurried over to the camera and began assembling the blocks.
Thus, during the next shoot, a comical scene unfolded.
Roshifu, playing the Red Riding Hood's grandmother, pointed at the several dozen centimeters tall Block Villa on the ground and coldly asked, "Can you provide a future for Red Riding Hood? Let me ask you, do you have this villa?"
Lu Mao struggled to suppress his inner turmoil and trembled as he said, "Roshifu, lower your finger a bit; the house isn’t taller than your finger!"
"Oh!" Roshifu nodded.
...
"Second scene, third shot!"
Soulmate played the Big Bad Wolf and encountered Green Pastures' Wolf Cousin.
I forgot to mention that Wolf Cousin was portrayed by Soul Sphere.
"Cousin, why are you crying? It’s just a villa. Your big brother will give you one; I guarantee it will leave Red Riding Hood's grandmother speechless."
With that, Wolf Cousin pulled out a Block Villa glued together from under his feet and handed it to the Big Bad Wolf.
Lu Mao looked on in silence.
So this is how one sends off a villa!
He had forgotten that the toy he bought, a fake mask, was too fragile and had already been ruined. Therefore, the character played by Soul Sphere, the Wolf Cousin, didn't even have a mask.
Of course, the resourceful Soul Clan quickly resolved this issue.
As for the method, they simply used a large marker to write "I am a wolf" on Soul Sphere's face.
"This way, as long as the audience has read some books, they'll recognize this as a wolf," Soul Sphere said proudly, having come up with the idea.
"But why do I feel like the audience's intelligence is being insulted?" Lu Mao remarked weakly.
