But since it had already been let out, Lu Mao could only curse himself for his loose lips. Soulmate was notorious for being a big mouth, and expecting him to keep a secret was like hoping a pig could climb a tree.
"I warn you, don't go spreading this around. If Charlie finds out, he might just kill me!" Lu Mao decided to give Soulmate a heads-up to avoid any unexpected trouble.
"Don't worry, I absolutely won't tell anyone," Soulmate vowed earnestly.
However, despite Soulmate's assurances, Lu Mao's skeptical expression showed that he didn't quite trust this guy's character.
Seeing this, Soulmate sighed in exasperation, "Why don't you trust me? I'm such a handsome guy; why would I bother lying to someone as ugly as you? That just doesn't make sense."
Lu Mao shot back with a frown, "Who are you cursing? Have you looked in the mirror? With that face of yours, there's no way you're related to the word 'handsome.'"
After the exchange, Lu Mao lamented, "Alright, fine. If you want to go out, go ahead. Just know that I'm definitely not the one who'll be most upset about it. Now hurry up and get lost; you're just getting in my way."
Seeing that Lu Mao wanted him gone, Soulmate quickly put on a smile and said, "Come on, Lu Dao! It's not like strength in numbers doesn't matter. Three cobblers can outsmart Zhuge Liang. I can help you brainstorm ideas; how am I getting in your way?"
"You? Help me brainstorm?"
Lu Mao shot a sideways glance at Soulmate and asked disdainfully, "Then go ahead and tell me where to get money? The root of my current troubles is simply that I don't have any cash."
"Get money?"
Soulmate's smile began to fade, and the atmosphere turned awkward for a moment.
Get money? If he knew how to make money, he wouldn't still be stuck as a loser actor at Sweet Potato Films; he'd have taken his family out for fun long ago. Indeed, Lu Mao's question completely stumped Soulmate.
"Let me ask you, Lu Mao, what do you need the money for?" Soulmate inquired thoughtfully.
At a glance, Lu Mao could tell that this guy was clueless, and he scoffed at the question. He replied nonchalantly, "Of course it's for promotion. The New Movie is finished, and if we don't have money for marketing, won't we end up losing everything?"
"Promotion? Isn't that supposed to be Charlie's job?" Soulmate asked, puzzled.
Back when Li Hong was at Sweet Potato Films, any promotional work was under Charlie's purview. All Lu Mao had to do as a director was focus on making the film; he didn't need to get involved in anything else. But now that Charlie, the main person, wasn't busy with it, why was Lu Mao, the director, taking on promotion?
"The problem is he's now the acting general manager! He can't spare time for promotion. As for the marketing of the New Movie, I'll handle it myself," Lu Mao explained with a frown.
"Weren't you saying that Charlie was willing to give you money? Why not just ask him for it?"
Lu Mao shot a glare at Soulmate, irritated. "I told you before, he wants me to agree to a condition before he'll give me the promotional funds."
"What condition? It wouldn't have anything to do with Eastern Maiden, would it?" Soulmate asked curiously while stroking his chin.
After thinking for a moment, Lu Mao realized he had already let some details slip to Soulmate. This condition didn't seem too bad after all. So, he sighed and explained, "You guessed it right; it does involve Eastern Maiden. The reason I'm troubled is that his condition is just too... well, you know."
"Hiss..."
Upon hearing how serious it was for Lu Mao, Soulmate inhaled sharply, feeling a chill run down his spine as his heart raced uncontrollably.
Could it be that Charlie wanted to play a three-way? Was Lu Mao previously struggling with whether to hold his ground or succumb to Charlie's lewd demands?
Seeing that Soulmate's expression was off, Lu Mao knew that he was overthinking again. However, he didn't mind much; the condition that Charlie proposed, although different from what Soulmate had imagined, was still shameless enough.
"Ugh, this guy insists that I arrange a bed scene for him, and the female lead has to be Eastern Maiden. Otherwise, he won't approve my promotional budget," Lu Mao explained with great distress.
"What the hell? This guy is too shameless, right? The boss gave him the temporary general manager position just so he could play these shameful games?"
Soulmate said indignantly, "No way! I have to stop him from using his power for personal gain!"
Lu Mao seemed to think of something unbelievable and asked cautiously, "Are you really thinking that way? You have no ulterior motives?"
Soulmate's face stiffened, and he awkwardly replied, "What are you thinking? I'm just helping you seek justice. How can you doubt my intentions? Do you think everyone has to be on guard?"
"Not everyone, but with you guys, I can't help but be cautious. I'm straight and definitely not going to change," Lu Mao said as he led Soulmate toward Charlie's office with righteous indignation.
Upon hearing Lu Mao's insinuation, Soulmate immediately protested, "What do you mean by that? Do you think I, Soulmate, am the kind of guy who goes after men?"
"Actually, that's exactly how I see you. Not just you; in my eyes, no one at Sweet Potato Films can be trusted. There are obvious gays like you and hidden ones like the boss. Honestly, working here makes me anxious all the time, fearing that one slip-up will get me turned," Lu Mao said flatly.
"That must be tough for you; you've really suffered, brother!" Soulmate suddenly felt sympathy for Lu Mao.
"I appreciate your concern, but please keep your hands to yourself." Glancing at Soulmate's hand reaching out for a little too much familiarity, Lu Mao replied coldly.
"My bad! My bad! Just a habit!" Soulmate said apologetically while scratching the back of his head.
The two of them walked side by side and soon arrived at the twelfth floor of the Baisheng Building, where Sweet Potato Films was located. When they pushed open the door to the general manager's office, they found Charlie sprawled out in a chair, eyes closed in slumber.
"Knock, knock!"
Soulmate banged on the desk, startling the sleeping Charlie awake.
Rubbing his eyes, Charlie glanced at the two and curiously asked, "What do you want? By the way, Lu Mao, have you made up your mind? If you don’t agree to my terms, your promotional funds will only be available when the boss returns!"
Hearing Charlie mention this, Soulmate slammed his fist on the desk in anger and shouted, "You shameless bitch! The boss entrusted you with the role of general manager so you could play by the rules and engage in shameful practices?"
As Soulmate grew more furious, he angrily punched Charlie and gritted his teeth, cursing, "You better come clean about who you've been making deals with! And when did you start plotting against Eastern Maiden?"
With that, Soulmate pulled out a finely crafted iron dagger from behind him and ominously warned, "If you give me a satisfactory answer, I’ll spare your life on behalf of Eastern Maiden. But if not, don’t blame me for being merciless! It’s been a while since I’ve had to deal with someone like you!"
