Half an hour later, it was finally the turn of Li Hong and Lin Ruxian in the queue.
Dressed in a spy-like outfit, Lin Ruxian walked into the office and, without looking up at the middle-aged woman responsible for processing marriage certificates, said, "Did you bring the Household Register?"
"I did!" Li Hong handed over their Household Register and identification cards.
The middle-aged woman glanced at the documents and asked Li Hong, "Do you have photos? A recent half-body color photo will do."
Li Hong and Lin Ruxian exchanged awkward glances.
"No..."
The middle-aged woman frowned and pointed to a red cloth backdrop nearby. "No problem, just take one here. You two sit tight; I'll have someone come to take your picture."
"Okay!" Li Hong and Lin Ruxian moved to the bench in front of the red cloth and waited for the photographer to arrive.
The photographer was not the same person as the one handling their paperwork; it was another woman.
This stylish woman, with a scarf around her neck and heavy makeup on her face, looked at them and pointed at Lin Ruxian. "Take off those sunglasses, scarf, and mask. You're getting married, not meeting a spy. You young people these days..."
Lin Ruxian glanced around nervously and said to the woman, "Auntie, my identity is a bit sensitive. Could you please close the door before taking the photo?"
The woman looked at Lin Ruxian, who was fully disguised, with confusion before frowning and closing the door.
Once the door was shut, Lin Ruxian finally felt relieved about being photographed by outsiders and obediently removed her disguise.
As soon as she took off her sunglasses and mask, both the Photographer Aunt and the registration lady were taken aback.
When Lin Ruxian finally removed the thick scarf from around her neck, both of them were left speechless.
"Wow, this girl is just too beautiful!" Registration Aunt exclaimed.
The photographer aunt was about to agree when a thought suddenly struck her.
She trembled as she pointed and stammered, "Hey, you... you are... in that, um... what was it... right, the show 'Temptation of Going Home,' playing that character San?"
"Lin Ruxian?" Registration Aunt prompted.
"Yes, yes, yes!"
Photographer Aunt said excitedly, "That's Lin Ruxian, right? Oh, I'm such a fan! I love the dramas you've acted in..."
In an instant, Photographer Aunt forgot her earlier annoyance and transformed into a devoted fan of Lin Ruxian, chattering endlessly about the classic roles she had portrayed on television.
Seeing that the aunt wouldn't stop talking, Registration Aunt quickly cleared her throat to interrupt Photographer Aunt's rambling.
"Hey girl, sorry about that. This old lady just loves watching TV, and when she suddenly sees her favorite star, she can't help but get a bit chatty," Registration Aunt explained.
Lin Ruxian waved her hand and smiled, "It's okay, Auntie. I'm really happy that you appreciate my performances."
The three of them turned into a fan meeting scene, causing Li Hong's presence to drop to an all-time low.
Fortunately, he wasn't completely overlooked. Soon enough, Registration Aunt shifted the conversation toward Li Hong.
"Hey, so this is your husband? He has no nose and no chin, and he's not very tall. He doesn't look like much at all," Photographer Aunt bluntly remarked.
Lin Ruxian covered her mouth and smiled, clearly amused by the aunt's words.
Li Hong's face darkened; if it weren't for the aunt's age, he would have stood up to refute her comments long ago.
What did she mean by having no nose or chin? Can men and women really be held to the same standard? Li Hong believed that although his face couldn't be considered exceptionally handsome or rugged, it was at least decent enough to be called good-looking.
How had it come to this, where he appeared as if he were severely disabled in the eyes of these aunts?
Fine, he decided not to engage with these two middle-aged women. Li Hong just sat there, waiting for them to take his picture.
Fortunately, they seemed to realize that this wasn't the time for idle chatter, and after a few exchanged words, the two aunts shifted their focus back to work.
"Sit closer, stretch your arms out a bit... yes, wrap your arms around the big star..." The aunt behind the camera instructed the two of them.
The aunt's instructions were nothing unusual, but Li Hong felt increasingly awkward. This was the first time he had been so close to a woman of his age, and he felt uncomfortable all over.
In contrast to Li Hong's embarrassment, Lin Ruxian appeared much more at ease. While Li Hong hesitated shyly, Lin Ruxian confidently leaned in closer to complete the shot.
Of course, Lin Ruxian was also feeling shy. However, with her background in performance, she was able to mask her bashfulness more easily, making it hard for anyone to notice anything unusual.
After the photos were taken, the aunt looked at Li Hong with an expression of disbelief and said, "You're a grown man, yet you're less bold than this girl. I've taken wedding photos for no fewer than a thousand couples, and I've never seen anyone as shy as you!"
Li Hong felt apologetic; he truly didn't know how to explain himself. Perhaps he really did have some sort of aversion to women, just like Lin Ruxian had suggested!
Fortunately, Lin Ruxian didn't seem to react much to the comment, which relieved Li Hong deep down.
Once the photos were done, it was unclear what kind of black technology was at play, but before long, the pictures were developed.
After the photos were taken, the next step was to fill out the Marriage Registration Application Statement, which was the simplest part.
Following that, the Registration Aunt happily accepted the 9 yuan processing fee after reviewing the materials submitted by both of them.
Holding the red marriage certificate with the official seal, Li Hong felt a moment of disbelief. Was he really no longer single?
While he was lost in thought, Lin Ruxian had already taken out two red bags of wedding candies from her bag and handed them to the two aunties.
“Aunties, have some wedding candy!” Lin Ruxian smiled brightly.
“Good, good! I wish you both a long and happy marriage and may you have children soon!” The Registration Aunt accepted the bag of candies with a beaming smile.
The Photographer Aunt nudged the Registration Aunt with her wrist and said with annoyance, “What are you talking about? They’re big stars; how can you say they should have children soon?”
“It’s fine; I also want to have a child soon,” Lin Ruxian replied without a hint of concern about the aunt's words, graciously accepting their blessings.
Amidst the harmonious atmosphere, Lin Ruxian put on her disguise again and waved goodbye to the reluctant aunties.
All the way back, following Lin Ruxian's instructions, Li Hong felt like a Good Fortune Boy, carrying a bag of candies and handing them out to everyone he met, which was quite unfortunate.
“Why did you buy so many candies?” Back in the car, seeing that there was still a large amount left in the bag, Li Hong asked with a wry smile.
He never expected that Lin Ruxian’s bag would be filled with candies.
“To give out wedding candy! It’s a good thing; why not share it with others?” Lin Ruxian replied earnestly.
Li Hong rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. “You’re my big star; we got married to help you escape from public scrutiny. Why are you making this feel so real?”
"Because... I'm serious about this!"
Lin Ruxian suddenly hugged the candy-stealing Li Hong, burying her head in his chest.
Li Hong, who had just unwrapped the candy, was startled and dropped the sweets on the floor. But he had no mind to pick them up now; his head was filled with Lin Ruxian's words.
"You’re serious about this?"
"Of course, what else would it be?" Lin Ruxian changed her position, greedily inhaling Li Hong's scent, teasingly asking.
Li Hong was on the verge of tears, his face filled with despair.
"You’re tricking me into marriage!"
