Yang Chou's words were startling, yet Jufeng remained impassive. More accurately, he was unable to react. The mixture of blood effectively concealed the expression on his face, and his drooping eyelids seemed as if they would never open.
The voice echoed in the dim room, resonant yet ineffective.
After a long pause, it appeared that Jufeng had not heard, showing no sign of response.
Not only was it bleak, but it was also eerily silent.
Yang Chou sat upright in his chair, noticing Jufeng's prolonged silence, and couldn't help but furrow his brow.
He spoke firmly, "You choose silence; do you intend to resign yourself to fate? I was considering bringing you in, but now it seems that doesn't matter." Suddenly, Yang Chou's voice turned sinister, rising in pitch.
"Then you can go die with your bunch of police Brothers."
With that, Yang Chou abruptly stood up, preparing to turn and leave. Just then, a weak voice from Jufeng broke the silence.
"Yang Ge."
There were two people with the surname Yang present, yet no one could misunderstand who this "Yang Ge" referred to.
Yang Chou halted but did not turn back; Yang Fang hurried forward to support Jufeng's shoulder.
"Feng, it's my fault for not being there for you. If you have something to say to me, if you're truly not an undercover agent, I will ensure you get justice."
Upon hearing this, Jufeng's stiff face slowly formed a faint smile. He shook his head slowly and said, "Yang Ge, there's no need for justice. Since the boss doesn't trust Feng, then my life is worth as little as grass. What difference does it make whether I'm an undercover agent or not?"
As Jufeng spoke these words, he couldn't help but cough painfully several times, and when he opened his mouth again, it was filled with bright red blood.
Yang Fang felt a tightening in his heart at the sight and continued to listen as Jufeng said, "Yang Ge, ever since I followed you, I've been blessed by your kindness and have lived a good month. During D156, I risked my life to save a brother. Given this bond of friendship, I have one request."
Jufeng coughed intermittently; if this were written down as prose, it would require countless punctuation marks. Hearing that his brother—who had saved his life multiple times—had something to ask for, Yang Fang quickly leaned in closer to listen intently.
"Feng, don't worry. No matter what you ask of me, I will agree. You will be fine."
Jufeng tried to steady his voice and said lightly, "Yang Ge, my brothers are unfortunate; knowing a brother like me is a lifetime of misfortune. Once I get to the other side, I will apologize to them. But my wife, that poor woman, knows nothing. After suffering for so many years with me, she shouldn't die at the hands of men. Please, Yang Ge, ensure her safety."
Having finished speaking, Jufeng looked at Yang Fang, who nodded heavily in agreement before suddenly fainting.
...
In Yang Chou's office, it had been a night since Jufeng was captured. Yang Chou sat upright behind his desk, with Chen Tan Hua standing behind him and the leader responsible for torturing Jufeng in front.
"What is the situation with Ju Feng?"
Yang Chou always maintained a proper posture while sitting, which inadvertently added pressure to the atmosphere.
The subordinate replied solemnly, "Boss, he still hasn't responded at all. No matter how we torture him or interrogate him, he remains silent. His external injuries are almost extensive; I'm afraid he won't be able to hold on much longer."
Yang Chou did not expect this young man to possess such resilience. However, he felt no pity for an enemy's determination; instead, he began to waver in his initial judgment.
"What about the others?"
"They're in the same situation. We've asked them several times without any change from their previous statements. Two of them couldn't withstand the torture and ended up revealing whatever we wanted to know, but their information was still worthless—just bones without any substance compared to the others."
Yang Chou fell silent and then asked, "What about that woman?"
Upon hearing Yang Chou mention Vera's name, the subordinate hesitated in his response.
"That woman... Yang Ge has been present all along. We haven't dared to torture her; she hasn't said much after a few questions—it seems she's terrified and keeps shouting to see her husband."
After finishing his inquiries, Yang Chou waved his hand for the subordinate to leave. Once the door closed, he slowly turned to Chen Tan Hua behind him.
"Do you still hold the same thoughts as before?"
Chen Tan Hua maintained a smile that was not quite a smile. After a moment of contemplation, he replied, "Not quite, but I did pay some attention earlier—he really hasn't left his place."
Yang Chou nodded with a semblance of a smile, not intentionally, but rather as an instinctive gesture.
After a brief pause, Yang Chou murmured to himself, "Then let's conduct one last test."
They returned to the room filled with blood and darkness. Jufeng appeared much the same as before, except his clothes were more tattered, and there was more blood, with coagulated clots becoming increasingly visible.
One of the subordinates roused Jufeng from his stupor. He groggily looked at the newcomer and upon recognizing Yang Chou, lowered his head again.
This time, only Chen Tan Hua accompanied him.
"Let me show you this."
Yang Chou gestured as one of his subordinates presented an electronic screen in front of Jufeng. On it was a figure of Hua Cheng in a video that wasn't very long.
First came scenes of Hua Cheng enduring countless tortures, followed by his pleas for mercy, and then his confession, admitting he was part of the Cosmic Police.
The footage abruptly cut off at that point; it was merely part of the interrogation process. The latter part consisted of Hua Cheng's ramblings and could not be shown to Jufeng.
"What are you thinking now? Although we are both part of the Cosmic Police, they lack your resolute spirit. Why do you still bear this burden? I promise you, if you are willing to surrender, I will immediately restore your position to its former glory, equal to Fang's status. Wouldn't you want that?"
Upon hearing this, Jufeng couldn't help but let out a cold laugh and murmured, "Yang the Boss, let me call you that one last time. I can understand your caution and doubt, but that does not mean I will accept it. I truly do not know how I can acknowledge something that is entirely fictitious. From the moment I first agreed to Yang Ge's proposal, I anticipated this outcome; wealth and glory are not so easily attained. Life and death are fated; if you wish to kill me, go ahead—I believe you won't feel even a hint of remorse."
In his final moments, Jufeng's gaze darkened with evident anger. Despite his calm demeanor, it was clear he had too many regrets about life.
Yang Chou remained silent, reflecting on how Yang Fang's emotional improvement had significantly increased trust in Ju Feng. He knew that although his cousin lacked extraordinary cunning, he was certainly reliable and steady. Gaining his trust would not be an easy task.
Was it possible that his judgment was wrong?
The sunlight slowly rose during the day, and although he could not feel the light, he could sense the warmth. The dim chamber grew increasingly hot, disturbing Yang Chou's peace of mind.
After a while, perhaps a long while, Yang Chou finally spoke slowly, "Even if you have passed this test, it does not mean I fully trust you. I hope that in the future, you won't give me a reason to suspect you. Otherwise, you will find yourself back here."
With that, Yang Chou turned and left. Jufeng stared blankly at Yang Chou's retreating figure, his expression calm. However, Chen Tan Hua noticed the hint of composure hidden in Jufeng's gaze.
Shifting his focus to Chen Tan Hua, the two locked eyes for two seconds; one left while the other lowered his head.
Jufeng silently etched a grudge in his heart. What Yang Chou had inflicted upon him today would soon be repaid.
The entire investigation and interrogation took place in secrecy, so it did not alarm too many people. Many terrorists only saw a military vehicle arrive late at night, leave after a while, and then return again.
