The battle with the United Heart Association was in full swing, yet Jufeng had to temporarily withdraw. Although Vera assured him that she could handle the Yamamoto Clan's matters, Romain could not afford to overlook them. After all, they were dealing with a world-class organization, and there would always be differences compared to previous encounters. Understanding the enemy early on was also a responsibility towards Hurricane and Vera.
That night, Jufeng and Vera headed to Tong City. According to Bill's information, this was a crucial route for the Yamamoto Clan and the best location for an ambush.
Upon arriving in Tong City, Bill transmitted the location of the Yamamoto Clan's hideout. It was an old Japanese machinery manufacturing plant that had been in decline for some time and was now within government planning zones. If they delayed any longer, it would likely become a wasteland; for now, it was barely habitable.
Jufeng showed Vera the location on their way there. The highway was quiet, with very few vehicles passing by; it was rare to see another car, and when they did, it was merely a fleeting encounter.
Inside the car were only Vera and Jufeng, excluding the driver. Zhu Yao had been left behind in Washing City to ensure everything at home was secure, while Lance had not been seen since the beginning.
Romain lounged in the car, occasionally glancing around to confirm that no one was following them. His gaze turned curious as he looked at Vera.
After staring for a while, Vera finally grew impatient and said coldly, "If you have something to ask, just go ahead. Stop staring at me."
At her words, Romain couldn't help but smile slightly. In the beginning, Vera would never have shown such emotions; no matter how he acted foolishly or playfully, the European Blue Cat remained indifferent. But now, the goddess had finally come down from her pedestal and seemed more human. Romain felt a sense of satisfaction in his heart.
However, after Vera's remark, Romain remained silent for a moment, lost in thought, which only irritated her further.
Even though she had stepped down from her divine status, she still carried an ethereal aura that made it impossible for her to act cute or playful. Instead, she coldly reminded him, "If you have nothing to say, then it’s best you remain silent tonight."
The sudden rise in her tone snapped Romain out of his reverie. He chuckled awkwardly as he realized his lapse in behavior.
"I do have something to say," he replied. "I'm just curious—are we really going to face hundreds of members of the Yamamoto Clan with just the two of us?"
Vera turned her head slightly; two strands of hair fell naturally along her cheeks, adding a touch of allure to her otherwise innocent appearance. Even though her gaze towards Romain was dismissive and disdainful, he found it captivating in its own way.
"You shouldn't ask such foolish questions. No matter how strong you are, you can't possibly take on hundreds of them, especially with warriors and ronin from Yingguo among them. Do you really think you're invincible?"
Jufeng was merely curious about how Vera's people would make their entrance, but he didn't expect to say something like that.
After hitting a wall, he huddled in a corner of the back seat, thinking that he couldn't sink any lower; otherwise, he would be letting Jia'er and Claudia down again.
The night drive was smooth, and they soon arrived at the location indicated by Bill. From a distance, the area was shrouded in darkness, surrounded by old buildings, with only a few scattered lights twinkling.
Shortly after Vera arrived, Lance appeared before them from nowhere and reported to Vera, "Everything is ready."
Vera nodded and fell silent, lowering her head to gently stroke Blue Cat a few times, as tenderly as a mother caressing her child.
After a moment, Blue Cat reluctantly lifted its delicate head from Vera's warm embrace. Its deep cat eyes lazily scanned the surroundings before it leaped down to the ground. It yawned and stretched in an exquisitely noble and aloof manner, then sauntered away into the depths of the night.
Seeing this, Jufeng's eyes brightened. He had previously thought Blue Cat was just Vera's pet; even if it was extraordinary, it wouldn't show much use in battle or situations like this. Now it seemed that the lazy cat was not without its merits.
About a quarter of an hour later, Blue Cat returned leisurely, drawing a few circles on the ground with its paws before burrowing back into Vera's arms.
Jufeng leaned down to look at the ground and saw neatly written Arabic numerals—506. He gasped and suddenly looked up in astonishment at the creature that had just fallen asleep in Vera's embrace. For the first time in his life, he had a magical thought.
"Is your cat some kind of spirit? It can count?"
Jufeng had never found it strange for animals to possess intelligence. Just like his Azure Wind Antelope, which not only understood human speech but also had far greater lethality than an ordinary falcon. However, when it came to counting, Azure Wind Antelope had never been trained for that—especially not for three-digit numbers. It was truly astonishing.
Vera did not respond to Jufeng's words, but the subtle yet proud smile on her delicate face revealed much.
Naturally, they would count, and as for whether they had become spirits or not, people like them had no belief in ghosts or deities.
Vera's smile vanished as quickly as it appeared, comparable to a fleeting flower. She calmly asked Lance, "Do you have any questions?"
The answer came in a powerful two-syllable word: "No!"
Vera nodded, and then Lance slowly disappeared into the night. After about a quarter of an hour, the silence in the factory suddenly turned noisy.
Vera turned her head to look at Jufeng and said, "Are you interested in seeing my Bear Guard? How does it compare to your Azure Wind Antelope?"
Jufeng shrugged and walked with Vera toward the factory.
Five hundred and six people were just a drop in the bucket for the Yamamoto Clan, but since they were fighting in a foreign land, this was enough to catch Jufeng's attention. Moreover, once they established a foothold here, there would surely be continuous supplies following.
As Jufeng and Vera approached, they could see several bodies scattered at the entrance of the factory; these appeared to be the fallen sentinels on patrol. The further they went inside, the more bodies they encountered. Some had already passed away, while many others were grievously injured and unable to continue fighting.
Vera's Bear Guard consisted entirely of European faces; however, most of what they had seen along the way were Asian faces. It was evident that the Bear Guard held a significant advantage in this surprise attack.
Jufeng couldn't help but feel curious and asked, "You've been coveting the Yamamoto Clan for so long; have you dealt with them before?"
Vera replied flatly, "Of course I've dealt with them. I have sent them greetings and expressed goodwill every year."
Jufeng was momentarily taken aback; women truly were fickle, willing to go to any lengths to achieve their goals, scheming behind the scenes without a hint of hesitation.
He casually asked, "Since we've coexisted peacefully for so many years, why suddenly take action now? Is it because of me that you have such confidence?"
Vera replied, "I will not leave my fate in the hands of others, but it is indeed your presence that has prompted me to take action."
The more Romain listened, the heavier the pressure felt. Reflecting on their interactions over the past six months, he weakly asked, "Have you been assessing me all this time?"
"You should feel fortunate because you passed the assessment."
However, Romain felt no sense of relief and murmured, "Once on a pirate ship, one can only resign to fate."
