Jufeng's words were slightly sour, but not in the way vinegar is; his tone sparked the imagination.
Fides saw Jufeng deny having met him before, and after carefully scrutinizing Jufeng, he confirmed that there were no similar or vague faces among the people he had encountered in the past. So he smiled and shifted to the main topic.
He gestured for Jufeng to take a seat inside and said, "Brother Zhang, I've long known about your reputation from my brother. It's truly impressive! Whenever there's a deal involving Brother Zhang, it always causes quite a stir. Hehe, I just wonder what kind of configuration Brother Zhang is planning to purchase this time?"
Fides and Jufeng walked side by side into the room, followed closely by Hua Cheng and the others. As Fides spoke, Hua Cheng nodded along enthusiastically, his flattery towards Jufeng exaggerated yet effective.
Jufeng held his head high, even more so than when he had raised the national flag during his studies. Upon hearing Fides's question, he didn't respond immediately. Instead, he waited until they turned a corner and entered the inner room, then boldly sat down on the sofa before speaking in his distinctive tone.
"Not much—just fifty mechs. The corresponding facilities need to be complete, and I also need some assorted firearms. Just supply according to the configuration for three companies."
The calm demeanor of Jufeng disguised as Zhang Feng shocked everyone present, especially the Terrorists. Ah! This was indeed a big deal. They had set up stalls here for several months, and even combined they barely matched the quantity Jufeng mentioned. Moreover, they had sold fewer than ten mechs so far, all purchased by wealthy individuals looking for something new. Now suddenly asking for fifty was truly a bold move.
The Terrorists couldn't help but feel delighted; the sooner they sold these items, the sooner they could leave Earth. Here, they felt trapped with no freedom of movement, and their impatience was growing.
They exchanged glances, revealing smiles that were intentionally concealed but ultimately transparent.
However, their leader, Fides, wore a different expression.
After hearing this news, his face momentarily froze—there was perhaps a hint of surprise, but more so he was contemplating the potential risks lurking beneath such a large order.
As a member of the Terrorists, he was extremely sensitive and could not easily trust anyone. He always adhered to the principle of "better to mistakenly kill a thousand than let one escape"—even if the other party was a buyer who could very well be their benefactor. Thus, Fides had to approach this matter with caution.
He murmured thoughtfully, "I see..." before falling into a moment of silence.
The crisis he was contemplating primarily stemmed from the police, both the Cosmic Police and the internal police on Earth.
Ever since the two Terrorists under Yang Chou's command were obliterated by the Cosmic Police's firepower, the Azure Dragon Monk team on Earth had been living in fear. They were terrified that the Cosmic Police had already uncovered their activities on Earth.
Although, on the surface, Earth still appeared peaceful, the rampant actions of the Terrorists had made space travel increasingly harsh, hindering the transportation of quality weapons. Nevertheless, the Azure Dragon Monk team remained anxious, unsure if the Cosmic Police were quietly investigating them, which was why they had yet to take any significant action.
As for the internal police on Earth, they were also a source of fear. The investigation into weapon smuggling and sales was stringent; while ordinary firearms and conventional weapons were manageable, anything involving mechs or explosives would not be treated lightly. If the police traced any leads back to the Terrorists, it would spell disaster.
Thus, Fides was now wary of the police, perceiving every stranger as a potential officer.
He turned to Jufeng and suddenly declared, “You are an undercover cop.”
At this statement, a myriad of expressions filled the room.
First came the shock from the Terrorists; they had thought this benefactor was leading them closer to leaving Earth, only to hear their leader utter such an unexpected and baffling remark.
Equally astonished were Hua Cheng and his companions. Their surprise masked their underlying concern; they hadn’t anticipated Fides would make such a statement out of nowhere. Yet for those who understood the situation, it was indeed a correct assessment.
In a corner where no one noticed, Chen Long clenched his fist tightly while Ning the Fatty discreetly slipped his hand into his pocket.
Of course, everyone’s attention was focused on Jufeng, as his reaction was crucial.
To Fides's surprise, Zhang Feng did not respond with vehement denial nor did he dismiss it as a joke; instead, he looked seriously at Fides and spoke in his characteristic tone.
“You are a pirate being hunted by the police.”
As soon as those words were spoken, the reactions of the crowd were once again starkly divided. The Terrorists had only followed the Azure Dragon Monk later, so they were unaware of Fides' identity. They simply found the conversation between the two quite interesting and fell silent.
As for Hua Cheng, he was completely at a loss and could only do his best to mediate a few words from the side.
Before he could speak, Fides replied, "How do you know I'm a pirate?"
Jufeng shrugged and said, "We in the mining business fear pirates like you the most. Otherwise, why would I be buying weapons from you? Am I just playing house? Do I treat mechs like toy robots? I'm Fides; such jokes aren't funny. You don't need to test me. As a manager, I may lack many skills, but I'm not afraid of threats. There are plenty of weapon sellers out there; I can just go to another one."
With that, Jufeng waved his sleeve and was about to leave. At that moment, Hua Cheng quickly grabbed Jufeng's arm and said, "Brother Zhang, wait! Fides isn't joking; you were joking back at him too. Alright, let's sit down and talk business; that's what matters most."
Fides watched Jufeng, who was about to turn away. Internally, he felt quite conflicted. Jufeng's abrupt words had caught him off guard, and he was already sweating coldly down his back.
He wasn't afraid of others knowing he was a Terrorist because he indeed was one. However, very few people knew about his pirate past, especially after the Azure Dragon Monk left Pirate Star. The past should have faded away with time, and there was no reason for Zhang Feng to know about it. Yet here he was, inadvertently hitting the mark.
In that instant, a flash of murderous intent crossed his mind but was quickly suppressed.
His reaction didn't seem like that of a police officer since they rarely responded in such a manner; they usually resorted to declarations of righteousness or martyrdom. Thus, in that moment, Fides believed Jufeng much more than he had before.
Little did he know that Jufeng actually did know about his past and dared to reveal this secret here.
It was precisely this quick-witted response that allowed Jufeng to smoothly pass this test. Otherwise, like Transform and Chen Tan Hua, who had gone through great lengths to earn trust, it would have been much more difficult.
Fides looked at Jufeng, who was being held back by Hua Cheng, and suddenly burst into laughter. He walked over to Jufeng and said, "Brother Zhang, as I said earlier, I'm just joking with you. Even if we don't make a deal, there's still goodwill between us; how can you just leave like that? We need to discuss business first, but we should also fill our stomachs first. I've prepared some light drinks; shall we have a toast?"
Jufeng naturally wasn't serious about leaving; he just needed an opportunity to step down gracefully. With both Hua Cheng and Fides providing him with that chance, he decided to take it.
"Well, I originally intended to sincerely negotiate this deal with Boss Fei, so leaving like this would seem insincere. Let's discuss it over dinner."
Hua Cheng chimed in from the side, "Exactly, that's the way to go. Harmony brings wealth."
With that, the three of them followed Fides to a somewhat elegant dining place, and this first meal was finally passed without incident.
Though it was without incident, it still lingered between life and death.
What was somewhat amusing was that while Fides revealed Jufeng's true identity, his own true identity was also disclosed. Yet he still ultimately felt that Jufeng's words were merely jokes and that his own speculations were false.
The truth was indeed the truth, but no one believed it.
