The mech soared through the skies, white clouds dancing behind it as the green mountains receded beneath.
Jufeng and Fides were crammed inside the cockpit of the mech. Fides's hands danced over the keyboard and joystick, while Jufeng's grip was firmly on the cold handgun.
The gun was still aimed at Fides, a constant since they left the warehouse.
Soon, they came to a stop in a secluded valley, a location that was certainly not the Terrorist Arms Factory; otherwise, Fides would have been far too careless.
Police were still in pursuit behind them. Although they were at a distance, their direction could still be tracked. Fides was particularly worried that their mech had already been locked onto by the authorities. If Nebula's surveillance system pinpointed their location, escaping would be nearly impossible.
After disembarking from the mech, Jufeng didn’t ask many questions; he simply followed Fides silently as they meandered through the valley. It took them two hours to reach a town with signs of life.
"You seem quite familiar with this area," Jufeng remarked, slightly surprised as they entered the town with ease.
Fides, preoccupied with the police trailing them, paid little attention to Jufeng's inquiry and casually replied, "I’ve anticipated various emergencies before, so I’ve mentally navigated this route countless times. However, there are some discrepancies with reality; according to the map, there used to be a phone booth here, but it seems it has been removed."
Jufeng observed a spot on the street that looked different from its surroundings; indeed, it bore signs of recent renovations, confirming Fides's speculation.
"Do you still need to notify headquarters? It seems your position there isn’t very high," he said with a tone thick with disdain. However, Fides chose not to engage in further conversation and continued searching for a place to make a call.
Eventually, they found what appeared to be a dessert shop. The owner was a kind middle-aged man who understood Fides's request after some gestures and willingly lent him the phone without charge.
As Fides dialed, Jufeng stepped back at Fides's urging, impatiently distancing himself while allowing Fides to make the call.
He thought he had moved far enough away, but little did he know that for Jufeng, it was still within earshot.
Jufeng heard the following as he slightly moved his ears.
"Boss, our warehouse has been robbed. It's my fault; a middleman we dealt with was an undercover agent, and I didn't recognize it. Please forgive me, Boss."
"Yes, that's right. This big spender escaped with me. He was afraid we wouldn't acknowledge the deal since it wasn't their fault, so he insisted I take him to our Arms Factory for a look."
"I'm so sorry, Boss. The other party was too cunning; it seems like he's an old hand at this kind of business. I let my guard down."
"But, Boss, we still have half of the money left. Our inventory is still sufficient; otherwise, it would be hard to sell. If we kill him now, it won't benefit us at all."
"Yes, yes, I understand. You're right; we can't take risks and must act cautiously. I'll kill him now and report back to you afterward."
Fides hung up the phone and then walked out of the dessert shop with Jufeng, moving to a secluded corner to discuss further.
Fides looked at Jufeng and gradually smiled, saying, "The boss has agreed to let me take you to the factory. However, before that, I need to make sure you don't have any tracking devices or anything like that on you. You know how cautious we have to be; Brother Zhang would want to be careful."
Fides tried to soften his tone to appear more gentle and make it easier for the other party to accept.
Upon hearing this, Jufeng secretly chuckled in his heart but maintained a calm facade as he replied, "What kind of check are we talking about? You’re not going to ask me to strip down in the street, are you?"
Fides shook his head repeatedly and said, "No need for that much trouble. I trust Brother Zhang; it's just that we need to go through the motions on the surface. I just need to search Brother Zhang's body."
If he were indeed an undercover agent, there were countless ways to hide a tracking chip in one's body without detection—like in hair strands, under the skin muscle, or even in teeth. If there were any doubts about him, killing him would be the safest option; there was no need for such procedures in a secluded place.
Jufeng sneered inwardly; they just wanted to take advantage of the body check to suddenly attack him. After all, there was plenty of time; he could play along for now.
Jufeng put on a nonchalant expression and raised his hands above his head, holding a gun in his right hand.
"Then hurry up, I still need to report back to the master."
Fides felt a surge of joy at this. He had been worried about encountering any unexpected issues while facing Jufeng. If he couldn't go through with the kill, it could leave a hidden danger. Since Jufeng was cooperating so well, he could proceed with the murder more confidently.
"Brother Zhang is indeed generous; it will be done shortly."
With that, Fides placed his hands on Jufeng's shoulders, then moved to his ribs, and finally to his waist.
Just as his palm reached the waist, a sharp dagger suddenly appeared in Fides' hand, in a position that Jufeng should not have been able to see.
In an instant, Fides' expression turned ferocious as he exerted force, preparing to plunge the blade into Jufeng's body.
They were so close, merely ten centimeters apart; he could even envision the scene of blood splattering as the blade pierced flesh.
However, reality proved that it was nothing but an illusion.
The blade did not sink into flesh but instead struck against metal with a sharp clang.
At Jufeng's waist appeared the handgun that should have been in Fides' possession.
Fides looked up in shock, but what met his eyes was a blurred image—a series of afterimages created by rapid movement in the real world.
With a loud bang, he didn't even notice Jufeng's strike before he was sent flying backward, crashing into a solid wall and falling heavily to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
At that moment, the dagger slipped from his grasp and fell through the air toward the ground.
Jufeng didn't give him time to think. He quickly stepped forward two paces and swung his hand casually, striking the falling dagger. The force redirected its trajectory, and it ultimately pierced Fides' throat, embedding itself in the gap of the wall behind him.
Until the end, Fides never understood why things had changed so quickly.
Of course, he might not have had the time to think about it at all.
Jufeng had long suspected in his heart that he would not let him go. So now he was fulfilling his promise to himself. Although from a soldier's perspective, he should have held back and resolved matters according to fair laws.
Without a moment's hesitation, Jufeng turned around and returned to the dessert shop.
He looked kindly at the peaceful Middle-Aged Man and gestured with his hand as if making a phone call.
Thanks to Fides' earlier experience, the man immediately understood Jufeng's meaning and nodded enthusiastically.
Then Jufeng made a call, saying, "Track my location and come as soon as possible."
After hanging up, Jufeng sat down in the dessert shop. After a morning of turmoil, it was nearly noon, and he took this opportunity to replenish his energy.
The Boss of the shop was gentle as jade; upon seeing Jufeng sit down, he promptly served him a rich assortment of pastries. Indeed, the exotic delicacies had their own unique flavor. Jufeng enjoyed some and then some more until Hua Cheng and Chen Tan Hua arrived, reluctantly stopping when he felt satisfied.
Of course, it wasn't free. Jufeng instructed Hua Cheng to settle the bill in full.
Jufeng shared what he had heard from Fides with Chen Tan Hua. It seemed that the clues ended here, but since Jufeng dared to kill Fides, he must have found a way out.
"Have the military check the destination of my previous call. I believe the Terrorist doesn't have the capability to evade detection on Earth."
After hearing the whole story, Chen Tan Hua truly admired Jufeng's adaptability. If it were him in that situation, he might have chosen to retreat in defeat and then follow Fides to find the location of the Terrorist's Arms Factory.
In no time at all, the military pinpointed a location within Ireland; however, it was quite far from here. It seemed that Fides had deliberately taken a detour to throw people off his trail.
The location was locked in, and everyone began to take action. Jufeng and Chen Tan Hua piloted their mechs ahead, while Hua Cheng and the others waited to move with the main military force.
It was important to note that this was national territory, and mechs were not allowed to fly freely. Once they took to the skies, they would certainly be targeted. However, this operation had been pre-arranged; otherwise, they would have been apprehended by Ireland's military before they even began.
The number of terrorists was not small, and the Arms Factory was undoubtedly piled high with weapons. If the enemy decided to go down in flames, the consequences could be unimaginable. Therefore, not only was there a need for offensive capabilities, but protective measures also had to be in place; otherwise, innocent people nearby could get hurt.
Jufeng and Chen Tan Hua's initial goal was to infiltrate and sabotage some energy devices to prevent a large-scale explosion from occurring.
Standing at the entrance of a dessert shop, Romain watched as several soldiers dealt with Fides's body. He felt a surge of agitation rising within him, brewing and ready to explode at any moment.
The confrontation with the Azure Dragon Monk was finally at hand. After this battle, it was likely that the terrorist activities would temporarily subside. Moreover, let’s not forget that the Azure Dragon Monk had previously been the most loyal "partner" of Incor and Equivor, two of the Fortune Global 500 companies. Romain thought about the potential discoveries he could make with the Azure Dragon Monk and how he could take down these two annoying giants in one fell swoop.
