For an adult man, a large bowl of noodles was hardly worth mentioning; in just a few moments, he had finished it effortlessly.
As the two of them paid and left, the beautiful waitress cast a lingering glance at Jufeng, as if he had betrayed her feelings.
Stepping onto the street, they were surrounded by rubble and the remains of collapsed buildings. Jufeng gazed into the distance, where all the ordinary people he could see had such desolate and sorrowful backs.
After walking two blocks, he arrived at the location where Chen Tan Hua was supposed to meet someone. To avoid raising suspicion, Jufeng chose to hide in a nearby corner, pretending to be just another passerby.
The chaos of war made Jufeng's thoughts drift. He had experienced a lonely and helpless life himself, and now his child was enduring the same hardships. How difficult such a life was! How many people in the world could be as fortunate as Jufeng and Yin Mo, having a solid family background behind their solitude? They lacked even the last barrier of indifference.
Perhaps it was because Jia'er had left that Jufeng became more sentimental, easily moved by the sights around him, causing his heart to rise and fall with emotion.
While Jufeng was lost in thought, an old man suddenly appeared beside him, hunched over with a child on his back who seemed to be crying for food. The old man staggered toward a nearby building, each step painfully difficult due to the rough terrain.
Jufeng approached him; since he was pretending to be a passerby, he decided to be a kind one. He supported the old man and gently asked, "Sir, is there anything I can help you with?"
The old man turned around and saw Jufeng's kind face. He sighed and said, "I used to live over there, but another battle recently destroyed my house. I couldn't escape in time; the child's parents are buried inside. I survived with this child because we were staying elsewhere. But now we've run out of formula milk for him. In this chaos, where can I find some? I can only go back home to get it."
Jufeng looked toward the building where half of it had collapsed. There were signs of digging; clearly, some kind-hearted people had helped retrieve the child's parents for burial. But those kind souls could not stay forever; now no one was there to assist the old man.
Jufeng glanced at Chen Tan Hua in the distance; the person he was waiting for had not yet arrived. He said, "Sir, wait here for me. I'll go get it for you; just tell me roughly where it is."
The building had partially collapsed but was not completely down; with caution, it might still be possible to enter.
Upon hearing this, the old man expressed his gratitude repeatedly and provided Jufeng with a general location before he hurried off.
The place was further away from Chen Tan Hua's location, across the street. Using his martial arts strength and agility, Jufeng soon entered the building and successfully found the formula milk. He did his utmost to gather all the intact formula milk he could find.
Sweat beads began to form on his forehead, yet Jufeng felt inexplicably joyful.
As he retraced his steps back, for some reason, an aura of danger seemed to materialize on the street.
Jufeng's expression hardened as he quickened his pace toward the old man.
Carrying formula milk all over his body, Jufeng looked like a son supporting his elderly father—a mere pitiful figure with no threat whatsoever.
At that moment, two people walked past Jufeng without any caution whatsoever.
However, Jufeng noticed the guns at their waists.
They had a clear target and firm steps. As they approached Jufeng, they reached for the guns at their sides.
It was a clear intention to draw their weapons and kill.
Jufeng looked up and saw Chen Tan Hua not far ahead.
In that moment, he understood. He quickly placed the Formula Milk on the ground and then sprang into action, swiftly subduing both individuals.
The two men lost consciousness completely, and the guns fell into Jufeng's hands.
At the same time, without hesitation, Jufeng shouted, "Chen Tan Hua!"
Hearing this, Chen Tan Hua immediately turned to look at Jufeng, saw the two men lying unconscious at his feet, and without a second thought or turning back, he quickly moved to the side.
Almost in the next second, bullets flew past the spot where Chen Tan Hua had been standing.
In a life-or-death moment, everything hung by a thread.
When the assassins searched for Chen Tan Hua again, he had already darted into an empty, dilapidated building nearby.
At this point, Jufeng naturally became the target of the assassins. Besides the two men at his feet, there were also four Gunner assassins across from him. They turned their weapons toward Jufeng.
Jufeng began to flee; after all, with such distance and facing armed opponents, he was not invulnerable. Not yet understanding the full situation, escaping was clearly the best option.
In an instant, he vanished from the assassins' sight.
The four assassins split into two teams to pursue Jufeng and Chen Tan Hua respectively.
As two of the assassins passed by an elderly man carrying a child, they did not pause for a moment. They ignored the Formula Milk on the ground and rushed after Jufeng's fleeing figure.
The old man watched their departing backs along with the two unconscious individuals and the scattered Formula Milk. He recalled how Jufeng had gestured to him before leaving, indicating that he should take the Formula Milk back himself; that was all he could do to help. The old man couldn't help but sigh to himself.
"This young man disregards his own life and still remembers to help an old man like me. What a good person! I hope good people are rewarded and that his enemies can't catch up with him."
After finishing his thoughts, it took several trips for him to carry all the Formula Milk back to his temporary shelter. He estimated how long these supplies would last and then sighed again—what would he do after consuming all of this?
Jufeng was originally waiting for the Witness that Chen Tan Hua had mentioned, but in the end, he was met by an assassin. A flurry of thoughts and hypotheses raced through his mind. The most likely scenario was that the Witness had turned traitor.
Wandering through the desolate ruins, Jufeng quickly shook off the two pursuers and arrived at the corner of the noodle shop where they had eaten earlier.
Before long, Chen Tan Hua hurriedly arrived at the same spot. This was their unspoken understanding; they had not discussed it beforehand, yet they both instinctively gathered here.
Upon seeing Chen Tan Hua, they did not have time to explain what had happened, as this place might not be safe. Therefore, Chen Tan Hua led Jufeng to another location in haste.
Still in this city, but in a slightly more distant corner, Chen Tan Hua and Jufeng did not return to the place Chen Tan Hua had chosen to stay. Instead, they took a risk and went to the temporary home of the Witness that Chen Tan Hua had mentioned.
As expected, the Witness was already dead in his home, meeting a particularly tragic end.
