The Commander was under the watchful gaze of Jufeng, his face resembling the skin of a ripe eggplant. Yet, in front of so many eyes, how could he, a Commander of the Dragon Breaker Army, simply yield?
"I naturally cannot take on the position of General. But I refuse to accept an outsider taking over," he declared.
Jufeng frowned at this response, not out of anger, but because even in a place like the Dragon Breaker Army, there were still schemes and intrigues at play.
It was clear that this Commander was an honest and somewhat naive person, and it was evident that his stepping forward had been somewhat manipulated by others.
Qi Fa and Ouyang Chang stood behind Jufeng; the former frowned like Jufeng, while the latter let out a long sigh.
Tian Feng, standing nearby, whispered to Vera Xixi and Chen Tan Hua, "He has a bit of a childish temper."
Chen Tan Hua laughed outright at this.
The night was quiet, and even a cold snort sounded harsh; how much more so a chuckle.
Many gazes shifted to Chen Tan Hua, and suddenly a cold wind blew through the night, causing Sisi to sneeze involuntarily.
It was an awkward sound; a girl sneezing in front of so many men was quite embarrassing. She shyly hid behind Vera.
Vera smiled and gently patted Sisi's head, thinking to herself that Sisi's sneeze was perfectly timed.
Jufeng cleared his throat softly, redirecting everyone's chilly gazes back to himself. He then began to step forward, weaving through the crowd until he stood two rows away from the Commander. With an air of nonchalance, he said, "I heard two things in your words: first, I am an outsider; second, you are unwilling to accept me as General. Am I correct?"
Jufeng's question fell upon the Commander, who had a slightly stout build. He shifted his belly and pressed his lips together before deliberately raising his voice, "Yes! So what?"
Jufeng nodded without a hint of displeasure; instead, there was a sense of appreciation on his face.
He continued to inquire, "May I ask how many years you have served in the Dragon Breaker Army?"
Commander was puzzled by Jufeng's question, thinking he was implying that he had spent too little time in the Dragon Breaker Army. This made him puff up with pride, as he had indeed been with the Dragon Breaker Army for many years, and it was through time that he had risen to the rank of Commander.
"I have been in the Dragon Breaker Army for twelve years!" he declared proudly.
"Oh," Jufeng nodded knowingly, then suddenly changed the subject, asking, "So, twelve years ago, did you consider yourself an outsider to the Dragon Breaker Army?"
Commander was about to say that of course he was an outsider, but suddenly felt something was off. Unable to articulate what it was, he stammered and fell silent.
Jufeng then turned to an officer beside him and asked, "Before joining the Dragon Breaker Army, were you an outsider?"
The officer, somewhat shy and without any faction in the army, had thought that changes in senior management would not affect him. He was surprised when Jufeng directed the question at him.
He was perceptive enough to understand how complex the current situation was. Neither the new generals nor the existing officers of the Dragon Breaker Army were people he could provoke. So he merely nodded slightly, giving face to both sides.
Jufeng continued to ask several others. Some answered while many simply nodded or remained silent with an air of arrogance. However, this did not anger Jufeng; after finishing his inquiries, he summarized his thoughts.
"The fact is, no one here is born belonging to the Dragon Breaker Army. Since everyone has come from being newcomers, why can't I join? I also hope that years from now, when someone asks me about my time here, I can proudly say that I have been in the Dragon Breaker Army for many years!"
Jufeng's words rang out powerfully and for reasons unknown, they spread far and wide. Those nearby understood clearly while those farther away could only guess at their meaning.
Suddenly, amidst the sea of soldiers, a few scattered applause broke out. There was little connection among them; it felt solitary yet resolute.
Jufeng nodded to himself, thinking that this was what the Dragon Breaker Army should be—a place that should never lack courageous and determined individuals.
Regaining his composure, Jufeng looked back at Commander, who now had his plump head bowed low.
"Earlier you said you wouldn't accept me as Commander because I am an outsider. So who would you accept as Commander? Is it the esteemed Ouyang Chang? Or the defiant Colonel Qi?"
Though Jufeng's words seemed casual, they were laced with hidden danger. Qi Fa and Ouyang Chang behind him couldn't help but feel a chill run down their spines.
Many people in the room were taken aback, their brows furrowing tightly.
Although the Commander was Meng Lang, he had spent a long time in the Military and understood the implications of Jufeng's words. He was shocked and quickly explained, "It wasn't the two Masters who asked me; it really has nothing to do with them."
"Oh~" Jufeng feigned understanding, then turned to gaze at Ouyang Chang and Qi Fa from a distance, saying meaningfully, "You two truly have the people's support!"
Neither of them responded. It was unclear why, but Chen Tan Hua let out a cold laugh and remarked in a voice only those nearby could hear, "Foolish!"
Jufeng felt that his spontaneous decision to recruit the army tonight was indeed a correct one, bringing so many unexpected surprises.
However, he temporarily set those thoughts aside and continued with his inquiries.
He asked a nearby officer, "What kind of person do you think can be qualified as the Commander of the Dragon Breaker Army?"
The officer, who also harbored some resentment towards Jufeng, replied curtly, "Of course, it should be someone with strong personal abilities and commanding skills, demonstrating sufficient strength."
Jufeng pondered for a moment before asking, "What about Chen Ziping?"
Upon hearing Jufeng directly mention the name of the War God, the officer felt somewhat displeased and responded, "The White Horse War God is indeed formidable; how many in the entire Cosmos can surpass him?"
Jufeng's arrival was sudden, even earlier than the results of the Demonstration, so most people present were still unaware of the outcome of the Military Exercise.
Until Jufeng said, "Just now, I faced your so-called War God in a tie at the United Sports Arena. I wonder if such strength is enough to qualify as the Commander of the Dragon Breaker Army?"
At this statement, a collective gasp echoed through the crowd, followed by an uproar. Everyone found it hard to believe that this young man standing before them, barely in his twenties, could actually tie with Chen Ziping. It was truly shocking.
Most soldiers of the Dragon Breaker Army only knew the name Jufeng and had a vague understanding of his Crimson Rank strength. As for the rest, it was all a result of convoluted tales that did not match reality. So when the bombshell of Jufeng dropped, their hearts began to waver.
Which side was right? Why were there discrepancies?
The purpose that Jufeng aimed to achieve tonight was nothing more than this.
A clear and resonant voice echoed through the crowd.
"Here, I will reintroduce myself. I dare to swear on my honor as a soldier that my self-introduction contains no embellishments. Perhaps it differs somewhat from what you have previously learned, but I urge everyone to be vigilant and to conduct thorough investigations before making any comments."
"I am Jufeng, blessed by the Dragon Elder, who accompanied him in his final moments. After the passing of the Dragon Elder, I was appointed Commander. I am Jufeng, a Red Tier Mid-Level Mecha Operator. Eight years ago, during the campaign against terrorists, I infiltrated and dismantled two terrorist teams under cover and successfully destroyed a terrorist Arms Factory on Earth. Three months ago, I led my friends to rescue Jiang Xue, the top researcher of Cosmos, which will greatly contribute to our mecha research efforts. Just moments ago in the Military Exercise, I ended in a draw with the war god Chen Ziping in demonstration."
"Meeting adjourned!"
