The Security Door was right ahead, and the Zombies on the ground were being dispatched one by one, with their Zombie Crystal s collected by Han Rui. Finally, everything was gathered together and handed over to Zheng Yifan.
Zheng Yifan squatted on the ground, his legs trembling uncontrollably, a layer of sweat forming on his white hair before he finally began to regain his temperature.
The burst of power had been overwhelming; that electric-like energy had drained Zheng Yifan's stamina as if it were a tangible force.
It took a full half minute for him to recover.
At that moment, the growls of the Zombies behind him grew louder, while the Left Guard had firmly shut the Security Door. Then, he pressed something on the wall, causing two heavy iron doors to appear behind the Security Door.
Upon closer inspection, the Security Door seemed more like a mere decoration; it was the two iron doors inside that served as the final line of defense.
Zhang Xiao understood the importance of the barriers inside and outside the Gladiatorial Arena and had already set up the Gate. Unfortunately, no one had executed this task, allowing the Zombies to rampage freely.
When the Security Door closed, everyone let out a sigh of relief. A few even leaned against the wall, vigorously wiping their foreheads and removing their fire helmets.
These helmets were indeed useful, but they were too hot; their damp clothing left them drenched in sweat.
"Weren't there supposed to be fifty people? Where are the others? Did they get separated?" Zheng Yifan asked.
The Left Guard removed his helmet and said apologetically, "They all went to join Zhang Xiao. A bunch of ingrates; I don't know who gave them a way out, but now they want to ally with those who would kill them."
An awkward silence fell over the group. Yet Zheng Yifan smiled—a genuine smile filled with joy.
"Since they chose to go, that's their freedom. That little bit of Zombie Crystal means nothing to me. Testing your loyalty with such a small amount is a good thing." After lightly smiling, Zheng Yifan walked outside and glanced toward the outer city area.
The outer city was already in chaos; instead of collectively fleeing outside the city, everyone rushed back to their homes to lock their doors, waiting for rescue from the Gathering Place.
Their blind trust in the Gathering Place stemmed from their unwillingness to endure a life filled with uncertainty. If the Gathering Place were to fall, they would find themselves in a far worse situation than when they had just fled from the cities, towns, and villages.
“Captain, our family and friends are held in the estate on the west side of the Gladiatorial Arena. Please allow us to rescue them,” the Left Guard spoke first.
He knew that he had led the way to Zheng Yifan, and now he had to take responsibility for those who had followed him.
“Alright, let’s set off now,” Zheng Yifan replied. After a brief recovery, he was back on his feet; it had only been a momentary surge of energy. Once he adapted, even if he remained in a state of constant exertion, there would be no lasting repercussions.
Slowly absorbing Zombie Crystal s, he now possessed over 7,000 of them. His strength was gradually accumulating; although it hadn’t yet reached a qualitative change through quantitative increase, his power was steadily rising.
On the way, there were no obstacles. The streets were eerily quiet, with only a few scattered Zombies wandering aimlessly. There were no people around and hardly any scent of blood.
“Hey! Brother, are you leaving the city? Take me with you!” Suddenly, an old man with a face full of white whiskers emerged from a nearby trash can, his eyes fixed intently on Zheng Yifan.
“If you want to leave the city, escape on your own. We’ll be heading out shortly. Anyone who wants to come with us is welcome; those who don’t can wait here for Zhang Xiao’s City Guard,” Zheng Yifan called out loudly so that everyone nearby could hear.
Despite his loud voice, the surrounding Zombies posed no threat to them. A dozen Butchers quickly and effortlessly dealt with the First-Level Zombies.
Gradually, more people filled the streets. Everyone understood the nature of Zombies; they feared living ones but felt no concern for the dead. With their firearms ready, they could easily eliminate any approaching threats.
Particularly when a few well-dressed Zombies appeared, their belongings were stripped away in an instant by the crowd. The entire process resembled an assembly line—swift and without delay—leaving not a trace of liquid on anyone.
“Let’s move! There are other exits behind us; we’ve only closed off the main gate closest to here.” After shouting a few commands, everyone quickened their pace once more.
Dressed in heavy weaponry and drenched in sweat, they continued to fight on. Maintaining their stamina was essential for their survival as Butchers.
Zheng Yifan could not comprehend the feeling of breaking through limits time and again, a training more terrifying than the Siberian Training Camp.
They faced death at every moment, confronting the threat of mortality. They were warriors who had escaped from the jaws of death.
“Zombie!” Suddenly, a woman screamed as she ran towards Zheng Yifan and the others, seeking safety only in numbers.
Especially when she saw their finely crafted weapons and equipment, she rushed over as if fleeing for her life.
“It’s a Second-Level Zombie! Quickly prepare the crossbow!” The woman collapsed behind them, tears streaming down her face. She was bare from the waist up, wearing only a pair of revealing shorts, her body shaved into a white tiger pattern. There was no hair to be seen, leaving everything clearly visible.
“We don’t have a crossbow; we can only withstand it.” The Left Guard stood firm with his large shield, his gaze fixed intensely on the distant Zombie. The Zombie had a corpse hanging from its scorpion tail—a man’s body, completely naked.
Seeing that corpse made the woman cry even harder.
“Clear the path quickly and move towards the destination! I’ll deal with that Zombie.” Zheng Yifan charged forward.
Fighting a Second-Level Zombie could easily lead to casualties; only his power from the Time-Space Barrier could ensure the defeat of the Second-Level Zombie.
Once they equipped these people with armor, they would be able to take on Second-Level Zombies one-on-one.
As long as he neutralized the threat posed by the Scorpion Tail, they would dare to engage in battle.
The Adamantium Shield glimmered with a lightning-like radiance as it flew towards the Zombie. Having used it once more, Zheng Yifan had adapted to the sensation of his power being drained and tried to control it to leave himself some reserve strength.
Without exhausting himself, the shield became like the sharpest blade, slicing through with a cold gleam, cleaving the Zombie in two while also severing its Scorpion Tail.
Blue Lightning stepped forward after cutting off Zombie and extracted the Zombie Crystal, severing the stinger of the Scorpion Tail. This was a material of extremely high strength, which, when melted down, surpassed even steel.
Collecting about fifty Scorpion Tails would allow them to forge a spear tip, sturdier than the titanium alloy they once used.
“Captain, we’ve rescued the person. Let’s retreat.”
At the same time, Han Rui and Su Qin were spotted at the street corner.
Everyone had gathered, their destination being the place outside the city that Han Rui had designated for Zheng Yifan.
In this unfamiliar territory, Zheng Yifan could only trust Han Rui’s judgment. After all, she was struggling to survive on her own.
The crowd continued to swell as the Zombie presence in the Inner City slowly spread. The roars of the Zombie kept everyone on edge, and more frightening were the strange Zombies occasionally seen gliding through the Inner City.
“Retreat!”
With that command, the Left Guard and others cleared a path ahead while Zheng Yifan, shield in hand, discussed future arrangements with Han Rui. The number of people behind them kept increasing.
No one who survived was foolish; chaos had erupted in the Inner City. The roars of the Zombie and cries of despair echoed throughout the Gathering Place. The Zombie were closing in, forcing them to flee once more.
