A faint dawn appeared in the east, fragile and small, like a slender rainbow revealing the most wonderful treasures of the world.
The earth revived, layers of blood on the ground slowly dried up, rising with a bloody scent. After a night of slaughter, nearly a hundred deaths occurred among the Zombies, and four members of the Firestorm Team fell.
The casualty rate was beyond imagination. Aside from the two who were killed by the Third-Stage Zombie, the other two unfortunate souls met their end when they were crushed by boulders while attacking Cochlea Village within Cat Ear Cliff.
At this moment, within the Gate of Cat Ear Cliff, over a thousand meters into Cochlea Village, seventy-seven people stood solemnly. They held weapons in their hands, their eyes burning as they gazed at the more than one hundred individuals kneeling in the center of the crowd.
They were the surviving butchers of this Gathering Place; others had long perished in the war. With strong crossbows in hand, they were lethal against their own kind. In an age without firearms, crossbows had become the most powerful weapon.
"I refuse to accept this! You scum dared to recklessly attack your own kind's Gathering Place; you should go to hell!" Guo Yi shouted furiously from his position in the center, bound tightly and unable to move.
Beside him, other bound captives trembled in fear. They knew their crimes were heinous; just looking at the Survivors outside who seemed eager to devour them made it clear that their fate was grim.
"You refuse? Do you still dare to refuse? How many of your kind have you killed? Are you even human? If I were you, I would have hanged myself with a rubber band long ago to avoid polluting this world," Pu Qiang snarled from above the crowd, glaring at him fiercely.
He felt an overwhelming urge to devour this beast. Seeing Guo Yi's slightly reddened eyes shattered his heart.
He could only imagine how terrifying it would be if his sister fell into the hands of such scum without his protection.
With empathy came even greater anger towards Guo Yi.
"Kill him! Kill him!"
The crowd erupted like a tsunami; those in the Gathering Place were nearly driven mad. They had once lived leisurely lives, occasionally venturing out to rural areas or highways to find something to eat, returning home with at least enough for a meal.
But ever since they were forced into this desolate place, everything changed. They needed to consume their own kind's flesh, raised like livestock, always at risk of slaughter.
Beautiful women had been taken away and subjected to torment; there was even a public execution ground within the Gathering Place. Everyone could witness the twisted performances of Guo Yi there.
Hundreds of crazed Fellows gathered together, becoming Guo Yi's subordinates and engaging in unspeakable acts.
Today, they had finally been defeated by another group of people. The crowd cheered joyfully; they would willingly embrace death if it meant avenging their deceased loved ones. They feared nothing.
Moreover, they no longer held any hope of survival. They were taken to their Gathering Place where no food reserves existed within Ruiguan; it was essentially a vast wasteland with no output, no trucks, and no Granary. Even those few villages had little food left; everything had been consumed completely.
"Quiet! Quiet!" The Left Guard stood on a tall platform, calming the restless hearts of the crowd below.
After a good ten minutes, everyone finally settled down, waiting for their impending fate. Would it be death, or a mere struggle for survival? Their only hope was to witness the demise of those beasts before they themselves succumbed to eternal night.
They knew that the man-eating flowers were about to mature, and raising these flowers required Zombies. The vast number of Zombies scattered across the land served as the best nourishment; as long as they could be lured out as bait, the man-eating flowers would mature within a week. Of course, by then, only a handful of people from the Gathering Place would remain.
Yet even so, they did not riot. They dared not, nor did they have the opportunity. They were unarmed; even if they ran out, they would merely become food for the Zombies. It would be better to inflict a wound on themselves and attract the Zombies, then take a knife to end it all—at least it would be a more comfortable way to die.
As anxiety filled everyone's hearts, Zheng Yifan donned a suit of armor. It was the armor used by Splay Lu Bu, exuding an aura of power and majesty.
However, it was merely that—a suit of armor as thin as cardboard, originally bought in jest by Li Jun when he sought out a Plate Armor manufacturer for Zheng Yifan to play with.
This item had been kept in his bedroom, and when he returned after evolving, he had miraculously brought it back with him.
Now wearing this armor, he radiated an imposing presence.
He shouted into a loudspeaker several times until everyone fell silent. Regardless of how he looked in that moment, anyone who could speak at such a time might very well determine their fate.
They wanted to know what the future held. Even if it was just a glimmer of hope, they yearned for it.
Sunlight poured over the earth, rays gradually illuminating the high platform as the sun rose.
A beam of sunlight shone upon him, reflecting a spectrum of colors. Under that morning light, people seemed to glimpse hope.
The hope of life.
"From this moment, this second onward! You are all free!"
With those words, everyone erupted in cheers. Freedom meant they wouldn’t have to die right now or serve as bait; perhaps there was a chance to obtain food and survive.
That flicker of hope instantly expanded and spread throughout the crowd. Among them were several ragged individuals whose eyes sparkled with strange light; they were once officials from Hansui City—one was the Public Security Director and the other the Executive Vice Mayor. Two former high-ranking officials now reduced to refugees felt their hearts surge with ambition.
As long as there was peace and no oppressive pressure, they had the ability to sway people's hearts and could gain more power.
But now, they lay low; they had to prioritize their own survival first before seeking more food to stage a comeback.
"Those who have committed heinous acts will ultimately meet a bad end; what awaits them now is death. I allow you to bring your weapons and step forward one by one—to avenge your brothers and sisters, your loved ones."
"After Avenge, you need to join us, become part of our Gathering Place, abide by the rules within the Gathering Place, and make defending our Gathering Place your top priority. In return, we will provide you with work and opportunities to obtain food."
"Now! The execution begins!"
The same execution platform, the same grandeur, but the butcher who once presided over it had now become the lamb awaiting slaughter. Faced with the blade, they were filled with fear.
"You can't kill me! If you kill me, you won't be able to obtain Essence, and you won't evolve into a Superpowered Individual. You have no idea how terrifying this place is, nor do you understand the horrors beyond Jiang Grand Bridge. You can't kill me!" Guo Yi was truly afraid, his voice rising in desperation.
At that moment...
Behind Zheng Yifan, a hunched figure slowly approached, awkwardly smiling at Zheng Yifan.
"He is Old Hou, a former Agent with extensive knowledge in interrogation techniques. Don't worry, give him ten minutes, and that Guo Yi will spill everything, even when he wet his pants as a child," Left Guard remarked from the side.
Watching Old Hou's unsteady gait and frail figure sent an inexplicable shiver down Zheng Yifan's spine. He quickly turned away, no longer wanting to look at Guo Yi.
"That's too cruel!"
This was the first impression that Old Hou left on Zheng Yifan.
