Crouching awkwardly on the ground, the air here was thin; even a slight exertion in breathing made Zheng Yifan feel the lack of oxygen. The darkness ahead was not complete; the surrounding rock walls glimmered with faint phosphorescence, adding to the eerie atmosphere of the cave entrance.
Clutching his thigh, Zheng Yifan gasped in pain. There was a terrifying force spreading from within, unlike any ordinary wound. A strange shadowy power was obstructing the healing of his injury, and blood dripped from his Adamantium Shield. He believed that Night Demon was also suffering; the sharpness and lethal power of the Adamantium Shield had always been Zheng Yifan's strongest weapon against enemies from a distance.
Indeed, Night Demon was now fleeing in a panic, a massive gash torn open in his abdomen, with his insides nearly spilling out. Fortunately, he was using shadows to constantly cover the wound, while threads from his cloak were falling away to stitch it up. He had no time to worry about the shadowy power affecting Zheng Yifan's injury.
In just a short while, Zheng Yifan found a way to deal with those shadowy forces effortlessly; the power of the Super Soldier Serum gradually healed his wound.
A whiff of blood still lingered in the air. Suddenly, an angry roar from a Zombie echoed from ahead.
Zheng Yifan's body tensed; this was bad. Outside lurked Night Demon, and if he hadn’t escaped, he would be trapped between a rock and a hard place with Zombies blocking his path. He was surrounded on all sides. With no other choice, Zheng Yifan unleashed the Time-Space Barrier. In just a few seconds, he returned to the real world.
At that moment of return, Zheng Yifan caught sight of a Zombie before him—one that had nearly evolved into a fish-like creature. They charged at him in frenzied groups, and then… Zheng Yifan found himself back in reality.
After enjoying a hearty meal and getting some much-needed sleep, Zheng Yifan felt all his strength finally returning. Given his current physical condition, as long as he didn’t have any severe injuries, he could recover overnight.
Reflecting on this escape, Zheng Yifan gained much insight; Night Demon’s strength had thoroughly pushed him to his limits and brought forth the power of In Calamity.
Closing his eyes, Zheng Yifan carefully examined the Character Card for In Calamity. It was the source of his power at this stage and certainly something he needed to understand deeply.

A simple Character Card, but an introduction that is anything but simple; just a few extra details reveal the terror of In Calamity.
He is not merely a level character, but a + level, likely infinitely close to a level 4 powerhouse. Such immense strength is certainly not to be underestimated. Zheng Yifan knows he has struck it lucky. The power he has just absorbed must have been delayed due to its overwhelming force.
Only under the extreme pressure of his body being pushed to its limits and the pursuit of the Night Demon could he unleash all his strength.
Zheng Yifan is not afraid of the shadowy tactics of the Night Demon. If it were only that, he would dare to confront it head-on. However, the terrifying sensation goes beyond that; the Night Demon must have some hidden trump card, though for some unknown reason, it seems unwilling to use it.
It could be extremely precious or exceedingly dangerous. Regardless, as long as the Night Demon refrains from using its final trump card, Zheng Yifan will ultimately be able to escape.

Among the newly unlocked abilities represented by question marks, three are closely tied to the Imperial Extreme Marvelous Book. Human insight allows for a formidable sixth sense to evade impending calamities. In Calamity Unavoidable represents an understanding outside oneself in times of crisis, enabling Zheng Yifan to maintain his true self and rationality amidst danger.

However, upon reflection, it becomes clear that these are essential traits for any protagonist in a game: turning peril into safety, miraculous luck, and finding fortune in misfortune. Aren't these three abilities remarkably similar?
With a sense of calm settling in, Zheng Yifan finally felt at ease. The post-apocalyptic world was indeed fraught with dangers. After spending over a week in the real world without encountering any issues, he was now faced with such a significant crisis just after entering the Apocalyptic World.
After pondering for a moment, Zheng Yifan could no longer resist the urge to explore the Apocalyptic World. He was drawn to the zombie he had encountered in the cave. How could there be zombies here? What lay beyond the other side of the cave?
Moreover, there was an important matter at hand—his investment fund and securities company still required operation by a supercomputer. Berry was nearly frantic, almost ready to drag Zheng Yifan into the fray, leaving him no choice but to pay attention.
However, Zheng Yifan still took the beautiful translator Jessica to scour various slave trading markets in France, primarily seeking wholesale food supplies such as grains, meats, and vegetables. They also picked up some winter necessities and even a few cosmetics for women. It wasn't until the afternoon that they gathered ten exploration helmets along with a plethora of backup power sources and essential supplies before officially heading down.
Of course, these devices operated on low voltage, making them suitable for use in the Apocalyptic World.
At three in the afternoon, Zheng Yifan suppressed his boiling blood and excitement, feeling as if he were embarking on a grand adventure. In the absence of any assistance, the dangerous atmosphere heightened his adrenaline rush.
Taking a couple of deep breaths, Zheng Yifan adjusted the Adamantium Shield on his left arm. The bloodstains had naturally worn off, leaving it looking almost new. However, it was entirely different from when he first acquired it; many of the coatings on the Adamantium Shield had begun to blur due to extensive combat. After all, this was not dealing with firearms—the coating deteriorated quickly. He feared that after advancing a few more times, the shield's effectiveness would diminish significantly. This item would not improve with his rising strength; it would forever remain a second-tier piece of equipment, only spared from obsolescence due to its remote usability.
Gripping the Silver Spear tightly in both hands, he felt it trembling with excitement.
With a light step forward, Zheng Yifan entered the portal and immediately faced a horde of zombies surrounding him.
But he was well-prepared; his exploration helmet illuminated their features clearly. Without exception, they were all half-fish and half-human—much stronger than ordinary first-level zombies, possessing greater strength and resilient muscles rather than showing signs of degeneration.
The only obvious weakness they displayed was their fear of fire.
Zheng Yifan's spear ignited with flickering flames that slowly burned within the underground cave. The fire spread gradually; his shooting skill in Calamity relied on speed and merged with wildfire spreading techniques. Although the firing speed was slow, the intensity of the flames steadily increased. This kind of power would be ineffective against humans—no one would foolishly wait for him to stab them—but only zombies could act so mindlessly.
As the flames crept forward, every zombie they touched ignited instantly. Their fish-like scales burned like fish oil when exposed to fire, transforming them into fiery beings that lost their lives within seconds, gradually turning into green liquid seeping into the soil.
The earth trembled imperceptibly; had Zheng Yifan not successfully received the inheritance from In Calamity, he would not have sensed this power. Fortunately, he had gained an understanding of human perception that allowed him to grasp everything happening around him.
Yet this power posed no threat to him; instead, it unconsciously absorbed nutrients from its surroundings.
It was as if he were a plant, and with that thought, Zheng Yifan felt even more excited. Plants could absorb the fluids of Zombies; was this not what Mutated Plants were? He just wondered whether the Mutated Plant he was about to encounter would have Essence Fruit and what its form would be.
Zheng Yifan slowed his pace, trying to walk lightly as he moved forward slowly.
The cave ahead grew larger and wider, with the occasional Zombie appearing, all of which Zheng Yifan dealt with effortlessly.
The further he went, the stronger his feelings became; there was danger ahead, but also opportunity. Since that was the case, why not take the plunge?
With a calm mindset, Zheng Yifan felt more composed. He gripped his rifle tightly and advanced slowly, not rushing—he couldn’t afford to rush. The cave was filled with branching paths; who knew which tunnel might harbor a Zombie? Only by following that sixth sense could he find his destination. As for getting out, he needn’t worry; he had already sprinkled Night Glow Powder on the ground, a special powder for explorers that effectively marked the trail he had taken.
Continuing forward, the ground gradually turned black, with patches of green moss growing on the rocks above. Water dripped slowly from the overhead stones, splashing against the rock surface.
However, the rock layers here had not been formed for long; places where water dripped continuously showed little erosion—only the soil on top had been washed away. Occasionally, there were a few smooth stones that had merely become polished.
What kind of great force could have carved such a complex cave? From the clues available, it was almost certain that this cave had formed in the year the apocalypse began; it hadn’t always been like this.
It was likely that something had happened during the onset of the apocalypse or that geological changes had led to the cave's emergence. As for the relationship between Vitality Emergence and this earthquake, Zheng Yifan dared not think too deeply about it; pursuing this matter further could very well lead him into trouble himself.
